NY Islanders/St. Louis

To NY Islanders:
G Brian Elliott

To St. Louis:
F Nino Niederreiter

Why NY Islanders make this trade:

The Islanders won't have any goalies signed for next season and it looks like Nabokov is on his way out. Prospect Nino Niederreiter obviously wants to get out of Long Island and is expendable. The Isles could easily trade him to get a good goaltender.

Why St. Louis makes this trade:

The Blues have two starting goaltenders in Halak and Elliott and one of them is going to go. Rookie goalie Jake Allen is definitely capable of being a backup in St. Louis and there's no need for Elliott at this point. Considering the Blues roster is pretty stacked at every position, upgrading their prospect pool wouldn't hurt.

As a Blues fan the Isles don't make this trade at all.

I think I'm going to have to say NO as an Isles fan.

I won't even drive Elliott to the airport. I'll stay up all night inventing a teleportation device to help Elliott get to Long Island.

The value is way off. I'd imagine NY wants Halak too. His contract is richer but his upside is bigger. Elliott is a nice backup.

Blues would still need to add to Halak for Nino. Nino's development is back on track after a strong season in the AHL. He has very good potential despite his awful season last year. He had no business being in the NHL.

The value of goalies in trade is fairly low as a general rule. If you're New York, even if you're comfortable giving up on your recent high draft pick, you spend that asset in some other way IMO. Trading that asset for a goalie is bad asset management.

Aside from that, the Blues get stuck with a guy they've totally and correctly soured on in Halak in order to add a high upside prospect at their deepest position. I don't get the logic of this trade from the Blues' side.

As bad as Nabokov played in the playoffs I much rather resign him then make this trade(hell I might rather sign him then get Elliot for super cheap)

So, the Isles move a top prospect for a goalie who is one year away from UFA and has been above-average exactly 1 season in his career (during which he played only 38 games).

Of course, the Isles could just throw money at Backstrom or Smith or Theodore or Khudobin, but why do that when you can trade a top prospect for a career backup instead?

Do this in a heartbeat as a Blues fan, doubt Isles would though
