I'm pretty shocked HFBoards would vote Tavares over Toews.

I'm in awe actually.

I'd easily rank Crosby, Ovechkin, Malkin and Lundquist ahead of him, Backstrom, Staal, Giroux and Kovalchuk all have strong cases for, as does Tavares but he's no way a consensus top-5 player in the new alignment.

Knowing what I know right now, I take Toews. Ask me again after next season and I might change my mind, because Tavares is getting close to becoming elite. Finding one more gear

Stamkos

You could easily make a case for Tavares being a more complete player than Giroux and Stamkos, as well as being on par with them in terms of goal-scoring ability. Defensively, I think Tavares is better than Stamkos though, obviously, Stammer scores more goals.

I dont see how you can really make a case for Backstrom.

In that case, Tavares slots somewhere between 3-5 in the East as it stands. You add in Detroit next season and only Datsyuk is better, though you could argue Zetterberg. So, in the new realignment he still slots somewhere between 3-6.

You clearly have no idea what you're talking about.
If this is the rationale for why people get so upset when someone says someone "isn't a top____" on this site, it sure explains a lot. You actually state that there's arguments for putting 5 centers above him and then say someone doesn't know what he's talking about because he obviously feels that those arguments hold true.

Toews is equal offensively and miles ahead defensively... Tavares very quickly becoming the most overrated player in the NHL.

Exactly. It's embarrassing. Toews is everything you want from a player and especially a captain. Tavares hasn't done anything that Toews has.

Toews AINEC, Tavares hasn't even hit a PPG yet as the lone superstar on the Island.

Top 10 players in the division IMO (Tavares is not close to top 5)
As a matter of fact, I'd argue a #1 D is more important than a 1C, therefore I would personally take Letang, and Staal over him in a draft. You win cups from the back end and in goal.

1.Malkin
2.Crosby
3.Lundqvist
4.Stamkos
5.Giroux/Kovalchuk
6.Letang
7.Tavares
8.Staal
9.Nash
10.Elias

I'd love Tavares, but Toews has done more in his first 3 years in the NHL than Tavares has done in his first 3 years in a division with Rinne, Weber, Suter, Lidstrom, STL and 1 year of Mason being elite. He still ended up with a Conn Smythe.

Not sure about the future, but Toews as of now for sure

I went Toews. He's not the sniper/finisher Tavares is but he is better almost everywhere else. Less flash, more substance in his game.

Damn close poll though.

LOL thank god you aren't a GM

I can't even believe I just saw Letang on a list above Tavares. If you think Toews is better, I can get that, but Letang? LOL

Very tough choice but I take Toews in the end for the Leafs. Our offense is fine. Adding a Selke calibre forward would be great.

Do people expect Tavares' shooting percentage to drop next year? It was awfully high compared to his first three years, and I don't watch him enough to know if there were tangible reasons, or he just got lucky? And Toews and Tavares' goal scoring rates are very, very similar, they are equal finishers

Tavares easily. Toews is good but Tavares is amazing. He can take over games with his playmaking and skill.

Maybe im not understanding the poll correctly but does Tavares having potential to get better because hes younger make him a better player?

Toews is the easy answer because as of now hes better then tavares at everything...

You know what really is amazing, being the top forward for the gold medal canadian olympic team and captaining your team to winning the stanley cup at the age of 21

Do people forget this?

Edit - add conn smythe to that too

Tavares hasn't even hit a PPG once in his career. And people say Datsyuk is the most overrated player on HF...

No Tavares shot improved dramatically this season, he worked on it during the offseason, if anything his shot will only get better. I could see him hitting 45+ goals next season. If the Islanders are going to take the next step forward, they will be adding a good winger to play with Tavares, when that happens Tavares will explode.

This is pretty much the arguments for each player, people who think Toews is better say he is just as good offensively as Tavares but way better on D, he is more complete and has a gold medal, stanley cup, conn smythe. People who think Tavares is better have no argument other that "OMG you dont watch the islanders, Tavares is soooooo much better you have to watch to understand he carried a team of plugs to the playoffs he was the only one who does anything, " The reason they say this is becasue there is no other argument to be made because Toews is just that much better, if you think Tavares the GOD is better please bring some stats not just what you see, cause you can arguee with opinions but you cant arguee with stats
