Well, that would be quite a difficult third line to play against...and a stacked top-6.

You basically just spent $12 million of actual cash to replace Pitkanen and McBain with Morrow and Murray, which isn't even a trade most would make.

What echlfreak does have right, though, is the likely cap hit that the 5th pick would get. I've seen many posts tabbing the pick at around 1.5M, but looking at recent history, that's pretty low.

Last year's 3rd pick and the closest in comparison, Alex Galchenyuk, has a 3.25M hit for Montreal despite only making 900k base. Mikhail Grigorenko has a 1.775M hit for Buffalo at #12 and Filip Forsberg's is 1.5M for Nashville at #11.

While the actual salary may be low, the cap hit and JR's hinting that the pick may make the team could account for the difference between his stated 60-61M payroll and the actual cap of 64M.

First, I don't see any reason to buy out McBain. They can trade him; there was interest at the deadline and I think there will be interest in the off-season. Buying him out would be poor resource management.

Second, even if buying out McBain were the route they took, I'd be surprised to see it used as a compliance buyout. McBain is still 25, so his buyout would only be 1/3 of his remaining salary. CapGeek explains the buyout totals, but with the cap hit only being $217K for 13-14, there's no reason to use a compliance buyout there.

Just to add, in my understanding, their performance bonuses are virtually unobtainable as well. Things like winning the Art Ross/Richard trophies, being MVP of regular season or Playoffs, winning the Stanley Cup, etc.

For all intents and purposes their pay is their base salary for the ELC.

So I worked with what we had with a couple of pick ups:

My 2014 Starters
FORWARDS
Jiri Tlusty ($1.600m) / Eric Staal ($8.250m) / Alexander Semin ($7.000m)
Jeff Skinner ($5.725m) / Jordan Staal ($6.000m) / Zac Dalpe ($0.735m)
Viktor Stalberg ($0.875m) / Victor Rask ($0.863m) / Tuomo Ruutu ($4.750m)
Jeremy Welsh ($0.850m) / Riley Nash ($0.735m) / Patrick Dwyer ($0.900m)
Kevin Westgarth ($0.725m)
DEFENSEMEN
Joni Pitkanen ($4.500m) / Tim Gleason ($4.000m)
Justin Faulk ($0.900m) / Jay Harrison ($1.500m)
Brett Bellemore ($0.525m) / Jamie McBain ($1.800m)
Rob Scuderi ($3.400m) /
GOALTENDERS
Cam Ward ($6.300m)
Justin Peters ($0.538m)
OTHER
Buyout: Derek Joslin ($0.125m)
RETAINED SALARY TRANSACTIONS (1.400% of upper limit)
Jussi Jokinen ($0.900m0.3%)
------
CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled with the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $63,495,833; BONUSES: $292,500
CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $1,096,667

It looks a little odd, but in essence Bellemore is really my 7th dman and Westgarth is my 13th forward. I add no draft picks but do pick up Rob Scuderi and Viktor Stalberg (who I think could have a big year). Other than that I make due with this year's team (yes I keep McBain). I try and trade Bowman and maybe another mid level prospect for a couple of draft picks at the draft. I just don't believe that Monahan, Barkov (if we're lucky), Lindholm, or Nichushkin will be ready this year....I know, I know, that hasn't stopped us in the past, but I think Muller get's his way, especially on the youngsters.

I think Dalpe and Rask make the team, Skinner and JStaal show chemistry, and we roll 3 very potent scoring lines. Our 4th line is mentored by Dwyer. The only down side is that we don't really get any additional PK specialists.

Stalberg isn't signing anywhere for $875k. He makes at least $2-3 million wherever he goes.

I wasn't buying them out I was saying trade them...too much mediocre skill on the back end and not enough toughness.

Trade Skinner, McBain, Jordan and a 4th rd pick to Florida for 2nd Overall pick

JR would never do that, but I see the logic.

The Staal's aren't going anywhere, we need Semin, and unfortunately the Canes don't have the cash to buyout Ruutu's ridiculous contract. Tlusty and Faulk are going to require big raises next year (given JRs history).

Skinner is great, but something has to give if the defense is to be fixed. Alas, it won't, and they will be one back-end injury from 9th+ place next year.

You really think Peg would take McBain + 2nd for Burmistrov? I know he's been underwhelming, but I didn't think they'd give up on him THAT quickly...

(This is a legit question, I'm horrible at determining trade value.)

Burmistrov is coming off a horrible season, and McBain has more value than many here give him credit, IMO.

I don't actually think we'll get him. It's just for fun.

Drayson Bowman for Nashville's 2013 4th (95)
Joni Pitkanen for Dallas's 2013 2nd + conditional 2014 2nd (plays 70 games or more in 2013-14 or its the 2014 3rd)

Free Agent signings:

Signed Brad Richards (after NYR buyout) to a 3 year $10 million deal
Signed Kyle Chipchura to a 1 year $675,000 deal
Signed Rob Scuderi to a 2 year $6,000,000 deal

No new kids from 2013 draft (assuming Barkov whom I would let play in Finland for a year or stash in Charlotte (I believe foreign players can play for AHL teams) for 1/2 a year and bring him up in the 2nd half). Dalpe, Rask, and Sutter start on 3rd, and 4th lines. I believe that both Dalpe and Rask can make the team and will be strong offensive contributors. The 3rd line has scary offensive potential, solid defensive contributors, and will provide crazy match up problems if the kids live up to their billing. The 4th line is solid and rugged.

Oh, and Brad Richards mentor's Skinner and teaches him to pass and accept passes. Jordan moves to wing and makes the transition to power forward.

There's enough $$$ to replace Peters if necessary, but I'll let that shake out with a solid back-up (even Ellis).

With Johnson and Scuderi we solidify our defensive core and Ryan Murphy sinks or swims as the PP QB.

Even if we have to give Chipchura a bit more and Sutter a bit more, we should still have a small cushion....not ideal but acceptable.

One last thought....if Richards acquits himself well, Barkov tears it up with the Checkers, and Rask proves to be as good as advertised (yes that's a lot of ifs), then I would consider dealing Richards at the deadline for picks and prospects, moving Dalpe to 2nd line wing w/either Staal or Skinner moving back to center. Youth movement without any more traditional rebuilding.

There should be the option to show it as text based somewhere at the bottom.
