Haha, keep waving your little pom poms hoping for this to fall apart. You've got a better chance of being struck by a stray meteorite at this juncture.

The much much bigger worry that is coming true is the fact that yes indeed taxes may go up to help pay for the arena indirectly as some of us predicted. The next phase of the LRT is facing financial pressure and musing at city hall is that we may need to raise taxes to help finance it. Mandell in the same interview says that we can't use the Provincial infra grants for this short fall as they have already been set aside for 'other projects'.

Anyone counting on fed or provincial funding at all for this thing had a screw loose or were flat out liars that said whatever people wanted to hear to get their pet project going.
Perhaps you're confused at what a "pet project" is, because a state of the art multi-use facility in the city's downtown is hardly a pet project, unless you thinking Edmonton is trying to be too boldly forward with their, not being a minor city, idea. We could always hope for being Alberta's Regina, that would be nice...right?

on an unrelated note, Arena Traktor in Chelyabinsk was hit by shards of flying-by meteorite earlier this year...

I haven't been keeping up, when is the casino being demolished? Does it have a final day of operation yet?

More drama surrounding the project.

Premier Redford denies the city's request from May for 7 million contribution towards arena's adjacent practice arena.

http://www.scribd.com/doc/166094766/...nied-Sept-2013

http://www.edmontonjournal.com/sport...tter-ej_oilers

Henderson seems worried... over the fact that 7 million was denied? 7 million???! A drop in the hat compared to the rest of the project! Jesus... this city... this province.
Bumped for the next page.

Here's an interesting exchange on Twitter...

So I have a suspicion that Mandel's answer will be that he was covering his bases by sending that letter AND filing for grant money.
Quote:
David Staples ‏@dstaples 2h
@margih99 this is my suspicion here too....
But shortly after Dan Grummett from CTV Saskatoon tweeted this (typical) Mandel quote.

Quote:
Dan Grummett ‏@DGrummettCTV 44m
"I've received assurances from the highest parts of the govt that we'd get funded." - Mandel on $7M 'no' from Premier on arena practice rink
So either things get "interesting" again or there's nothing to see here. I mean, the Mayor has known about Redford's "no" since June.

I park there right by the fence and have no problem with it.. We get special rate through work for that lot. Would rather park there than waste $120\mo+ on downtown parking.

The Premier has put the kibosh on a city request for 7 million dollars towards the community rink which would be part of the bigger downtown arena project. In a letter to Edmonton’s mayor, Alison Redford says no provincial dollars are available, but says the city is welcome to use provincial MSI money.
Mayor Mandel says they’re still working on it.

"If we always sat back and accepted the word 'no' from everybody, we would do nothing in this city. So there are many, many ways to skin the cat and do the kinds of things we need to do to build a great city."

The plan is to have the rink available for public use and for the Oilers to practice on.

Obviously the walls of the practice arena are going to be lined with cat fur. Cheap insulation.

How many times is Mandel going to fly that false "I was promised provincial funding" balloon.

He was doing that just last spring before it turned into the latest house of lies.

jebus, just shut up and retire already.

The biggest worry I have is a Diotte victory and then watch as he tries to dismantle the entire thing.

Diotte wouldn't have the authority or power to do a damn thing here. Unless of course he wants to drag the city into multi-million dollar lawsuits.

At this point it's a two man barricade. Diotte to make a name for himself, and Replaement beside him because there is no Boston Pizza planned in the complex.

The casino is going to remain in operation in it's current location until after the arena opens at which point they will move to a new building being built concurrently with the arena just north of where they are currently located. The casino will use the bottom 2-3 floors of a 3-6 floor building, the top floors will be occupied by the oilers offices, which will move from their current kingsway location. Thats the plan right now anyway, but it seems to change like every 3 weeks. After the casino moves into the new building the old one will be demolished and construction started on another building (hotel rumored) on that site.

Thanks for the pictures Turrican.

Could someone please tell me which direction in the picture is north.
Sorry for the stupid question, but I haven't lived in Edmonton since the LRT was a pipedream, and I'm not seeing much that I recognize in that picture.

North is to the right. The road is 4th avenue (or 104 ave to be more precise) running east (bottom) to west (top).

If you lived in the City that long ago you would not recognize the area at all. Just west of the area in the picture is MacEwan Uniersity which I think was one of the major catalysts for the areas revitalization.

Are you an Oiler fan at all ? I have never read one good thing about the Oilers from you . Maybe you are a Canuck fan who is hiding his true colours . I live in NS now , but when i lived in Calgary i use to drive to Edmonton lots to see the Oilers . That was 15 years ago and they need a new arena then .
The Oilers belongs in Edmonton always . Edmonton has been thru a lot with the Oilers from the lean years to their cups and now a complete rebuild . The city of Edmonton and their great fans deserves to always have the Oilers .

Mr Katz thinks Seattle, Quebec City & Hamilton deserve the Oilers too.
Maybe Daryl is just a great Canadian & thinks the Oilers are Canadas team
