While I was on vacation in Cancun this September, I happened to meet and hang out with one of the architects for the new arena. She is in charge of the winter garden among other things.
The few things I remember about the conversation:
-There are no 90 degree angles in the building. Very modern and complex architecturally. A welcome change from the sports arena box that get made so often.
-There has been much discussion about branding in the building. The architects that are designing it are quite fond of their work and they are getting lots of pressure to make sure there is suitable area inside for branding/logos/corporate sponsorships. She likened it to putting bumper stickers all over a Mercedes. What reminded me of this is that she said that Verizon wireless was making the biggest push for marketing space. This was right around the time that those anti-US moblie company commercials were on the radio. Now Rogers is the naming rights holder. Did they make this play to push Verizon out of the game and how much did it really cost them?
-The firm has been very antsy about this deal not going through. She said if it got delayed any farther about 50 people would immediately lose their jobs. But also everyone was very excited to work on it. Its their most talked about project, both in-house and in the public. Its going to be better received than the new Atlanta Falcons stadium that they are also building. The old Georgia Dome (1992) had a 300 mil upgrade a few years back and now they want to tear it down and build a new one, partially taxpayer funded. Its not going over well apparently.
For my part I assured her that the deal would go through and all the BS you hear on the news is just posturing by officials to make it seem like they are playing hardball. Everyone actually wants this thing.
Also I mentioned that whatever the number of bathrooms that they have planned, could they just go ahead and triple that. I'm not spending money when I'm waiting in line to pee.
Ugh. Can't stand that company. You would never suspect Canada of being a 1st world country based on the complete and utter incompetence of our telecommunication companies. Wouldn't have believed myself it 5 years ago somebody told me that Telus was the only reliable and decent telecommunication company in the country. Rogers, Bell and Shaw are just indescribably bad and they gouge the hell out of their consumers for inferior services that pale in comparison to the rest of the developed world.
Yup. Nucks play at Rogers Arena, Jays play at Rogers Centre. Eventually Rogers may have the naming rights to every building in Canada.
Yeah more I think about that I really don't like the fact that a bunch of buildings share a name
Imagine if like 7 buildings in the US were called the Pepsi Centre
Although the name itself isn't so bad I don't know it doesn't really matter it could be worse though it could have been the Canadian Tire Center
Don't like that we basically have the same arena name as the Nucks, but what can you do.
I think it would be pretty cool if they called it Rogers Colesium.
It's not Rogers' Collesium because they want people to say RODGERS. If it was Rogers' Collesium every body would say "heading to the collesium for the game/concert/etc tonight". But by calling it Rogers' Place, (which sucks btw) no one will say "going to the Place tonight". Very sneaky.
Its Crazy, they might as well call the NHL, the Rogers' NHL. Think that's crazy, not really, anyone heard of Barclay's Premier League? Personally I think that advertising is just getting stupider and stupider, where does it end?
