In the case of Rogers it ties the company even closer to the NHL which isn't a terrible idea in Canada.

I am sure the Oilers had zero input in the naming decision.

By the way you just wrote "why the suck so much" smart guy.

Ah so this is like when the Oil companies give the politicians hundreds of thousands during campaign time and then in return the Oil companies get to do whatever they want.

To jump on sdimedru's idea of a fan chosen name to refer to the new building as, can people throw out some suggestions for what they would like to call it? After we get a few I will start up a poll.

The basic idea is that a company can create impressions. A certain number of mentions equals a print ad, or a TV ad. Companies pay $ for impressions. So it is a reallocation of marketing spend. For example, if you have to pay $10K for a 30 sec radio spot, and 100 mentions on TSN = the same impresisons to the customer, you should be willing to pay anything up to $10K for those 100 mentions. And that is value before **** comparison.

What a wasteful and such an easy manipulated society we live in.

Half the time it takes me 7 or 8 views of a commercial to figure out that it's yet another viagra like commercial.

Oilphan did a good job actually explaining part of the economics of it...

The economics aren't always beneficial but brand recognition and identity and using the naming rights as a vehicle are beneficial. It creates brand visibility, loyalty, helps the corporate image and gives them a platform for experiential branding.

This sounds interesting. iPads at your seats with curated stats? Maybe they'll put in dbox seats like the theatre - now you can really feel that bone crunching hit.

Long time coming. Anyone else notice TELUS didn't renew their sponsorship? I know the Oilers priced TELUS out. You'll see Rogers charging stations around rexall, just look for the line bigger than beer or 50/50. Interested to see the # and what rogers gets in terms of in building and game broadcast ads. The oilers typically undersell their reach. (I direct a major sponsorship revenue generating organization)
