Finally...it's over. Talk started in 1994 when they decided to renovate. Hope she is a beauty when she's done.

I read that they are planning an 85,000 square foot Las Vegas style Casino in the Arena district which is exciting as well. How big is the current Bacarat casino?

e-mail sent to all city employees earlier today from Mr. Farbrother

Quote:
Earlier today I had the pleasure of announcing that the arena project’s Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) has come in within the $480 million budget set by City Council, giving us the green light to proceed with the construction of Rogers Place. This is exciting news for our city and in particular for our downtown as the arena is a vital part of our ongoing effort to revitalize the heart of our city.

In addition to confirming the GMP for the arena itself, we also confirmed the costs associated with the other four infrastructure pieces – Wintergarden, pedestrian corridor, LRT link and community rink – as being within the budget set. The price for the arena project (Rogers Place and four infrastructure pieces) is $606.5 million, which includes an additional $2 million contribution from MacEwan University towards the community rink.
The GMP process means that the construction manager bears all risk for cost increases in labour and materials throughout the project, protecting the City and Katz Group from having to pay more if these costs change. The project team has been working on the final design over the past year so that it keeps true to the schematic designs shared in spring 2012, and meets the budget set by Council.
Site preparation is expected to begin as early as next week and breaking ground in early March. When Rogers Place opens in the fall of 2016 it will feature 18,674 seats, wider concourses with a variety of amenities for fans and concert goers to enjoy during intermissions, and new models for seating including loge seating which will be more affordable for our many small and medium businesses compared to suites.

As well, we also released today a series of images that showcase the final design for the project. These are available at www.edmonton.ca/downtownarena

I would like to extend a huge thank you to all City staff who have been involved in helping to advance this project and will continue to guide the development. This has truly been a team effort and is a clear demonstration of one city at work as staff from each department within the Corporation have been involved. Your efforts and commitment to this project and advancing our downtown have truly been outstanding.

So the arena is $480M and the other pet projects are $126M. Interesting as I thought the other items were included in the original cost of the project.

The price for the arena alone has been at or around $480m since the beginning.

This.

Once this is built you won't hear anyone complaining. Maybe other than those that don't leave the confines of their homes.

Screw the shovel in the ground. Until I see the actually doors swing open, I will be pessimistic. I used to be a huge Katz backer, but he has proven to be a shady ****** who I have absolutely zero trust in. Remember, this is Edmonchuk, City of Last Place finishing teams and perrenial screwups. Deadlines and promises mean nothing here.

I thought they were too. It's almost comical to compare what the original deal that was proposed has morphed into today. Bait and switch. I'm sure there will be many more financial surprises before it's all said and done but at least the shovels are about to go into the ground and we can finally start counting down to when it'll open.

I didn't catch the press conference so can I just assume Katz was only in town about the arena and wasn't interested in talking about his horrible hockey team?

Huh? The first proposal from Katz was in 2010 and it was a $1.4B project. The arena alone was going to cost between $400 and $450m.

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/...rticle1210782/

From 2012:

Quote:
As the arena's conceptual design moved into its "schematics" phase, it has become clear the project couldn't come home for the fixed $450 million price tag, not as time goes by and Alberta's construction costs continue to rise. The new cost estimate, in the $480 million neighbourhood, was mutually arrived at.
http://www.hicksbiz.com/Home/tabid/5...-Edmonton.aspx

January 2013, talking about the October 2011 framework:

Quote:
The second agreement went sour when costs went from $450 million to $480. Fifteen months later the city and Katz Group ended up agreeing to split the increased costs.
http://www.edmontonsun.com/2013/01/2...n-october-2011

The $480m number has been known for a few years.

If only you knew how the rest of the projects went in this City/Province/Country.

Did the media ask him about the team? The presser was about the Arena, why is it automatically suppose to be turned into an Oilers press conference?

I really don't get a lot of you. It's like you've lived in a bubble and have a different set of reality.

As a resident downtown, finally. Glad to see this getting done. This downtown needs one hell of a face lift. Good start.

Give me a break. I'm just pointing out the obvious that this guy only shows his face in public when it concerns the arena. When it comes to the problems with the team he releases a statement or at the very best a canned video where he doesn't have to answer questions from the media. How in the hell am I living in a bubble or have a different set of reality? Is it because I'd like to see him held to some accountability for the gifts he is receiving here?

Hard to show your face in public when you don't live here. So OBVIOUSLY he'd show up when it concerns the arena considering he's plays a large factor in it.

What do you mean held to accountability? Who is he accountable to? What sort of negative event has taken place directly involving him should he be accountable for? I don't really understand what you're getting at here...

How many other owners are in front of the media answering questions about their hockey teams? All that I see are the coaches, GM's, and presidents. Do you really think that he would have anything else to say that the others do not?

Nice to see Emperor Palpatine...err Daryl Katz's new arena vision come to fruition after he swindled taxpayers using coercion and blackmail to get his Death Star project running.

Regardless, the arena looks beautiful and I'm glad it's finally coming together. I just wish Katz handled it better.
