Whos playing defence for us next year?

what do you guys think of Sulzer and Pardy? Think we re-sign one of them? Who do you think our 7 defencemen will be (1 in the press box) when the season starts? Think we target any in free agency?

Myers, Sekera, Weber, Pysyk, Ehrhoff and McNabb with Pardy/Sulzer/Ruhwedel/UFA for possible depth.

Sekera-Myers
Ehrhoff-Pysyk
Weber-_____

Then one of McNabb or Ruhwedel as the 6.

I don't care for Sulzer's inherent soft play. I'd rather they look for another player there, and if it is Pardy, he's clearly a #7 type and not capable of handling much beyond that. Defensemen ought to be good at defending, be it physically handling a forward to win a puck battle and clear the zone, intercepting a puck to clear the zone, etc... I could give a flying rats ass if a non-specialist has had an unsustainable shooting percentage in his handful of Sabre games, it doesn't merit keeping him since the players to shield ought to be someone like Ruhwedel or Pysyk or McNabb as they get OJT, rather than vet plugs like Soft-zer.

I think they will try to add at least one D through free agency.

I think 1 or 2 rookies will be on D. Not 3. Our 7th D will not be a rookie. That depth player will be in Rochester.

So who will earn a spot in training camp? Ruhwedel, Pysyk or McNabb?

Goin out on a limb:

Ehrhoff - Babchuk
Myers - Tallinder
Pysyk-Weber

Sulzer/Pardy

Sign Babchuk 2 year 5 million (Not the ideal top pairing dman)
Trade 5th and c level prospect or rights to one for Tallinder

I have Sekera being traded in a deal to move up in the draft.

Resign Sulzer 1yr let him rehab his injury and ease him back in and use as a possible treade chip/7th dman
Resign Pardy 1 year ..let him start in Buffalo if Sulzer is still out if not let him anchor amerks defense (can't forget the amerks darcy!)
Let Mcnabb rehab his injury and get another year of top pairing minutes in.

I think the Vinyl Outlet is still de fence sponsor of the Sabres.

But for defense, I'll have to see what shakes out after the draft.

You do realize 'defence' is a proper (Commonwealth) alternative spelling for 'defense', right?

I believe this will be it and this is what I want to see. Let McNabb or Chad win that last spot and hopefully they step up.

I had previously figured that Sulzer (maybe) or Pardy (probably) would get re-signed on a one year deal. Now though, and especially if Buffalo stays at #8, I would think a D-man (Ristolainen) would be drafted that could make the roster, resulting in...

Ehrhoff-Myers
Sekera-Pysyk
Weber-Ruhwedel
McNabb/Ristolainen

I would assume:
Myers
Sekera
Ehrhoff
Pysyk
Weber
Mcnabb/Sulzer/UFA

Its hard to tell at this point

Myers - Pysyk
Sulzer - Ehrhoff
Weber - McNabb/Ruhwedhel/Pardy

I'd keep Pardy at a lower cap hit. And if the Sabres trade up in the draft Sekera will be a part of the deal.

Can McNabb be sent back to the AHL without waivers?

I agree with Chain's thought -- let McNabb and Ruh battle for the 6th spot, sign a vet to be 7th and the "loser" then gets sent to Rochester to log top pair minutes.

The point was simply to make people laugh at the expense of the Vinyl Outlet. Those fences look so cheap. But I see how it can be viewed either way though. Darn internet and lack of tone when typing.

Sulzer >>>> Pardy. Both suck at defense, one has at least shown to be capable of logging an amount of top four minutes. I've yet to see a "good" defensive player nominated for the 7th, even in a bottom pairing role.

Sekera-Ehrhoff (all situations, difficult ES matchups, ~50% OZS)
_____-Myers (starts out as offensive pairing getting cushier assignments with the potential for Hoff/Myers to swap spots if they can get a full season out of the kid. >50% OZS)
Weber-Pysyk (third pairing TOI/matchups ~45%OZS)

How about Rozsival or Zidlicky and let the youngsters get more time in the AHL and as injury call ups

I'd prefer a guy who's more defensively oriented.

We've got PP/puck movers in Myers, Ehrhoff, Pysyk and Sekera. I want a guy that doesn't really care about the offensive zone.

I generally agree except I think I'd prefer one roster spot guaranteed to a rookie and have two cheap vets to start the season (and, frankly, I don't want Pysyk feeling too secure about his job, either).

McNabb (coming off the injury) and Ruhwedel (7 pro games) would both be better served at this point getting regular minutes either in Rochester or Buffalo than as a bench player in Buffalo, but I don't feel comfortable having one of them guaranteed a spot out of training camp.

The advantage of having two cheap veteran 7th defensemen (in the Pardy/Sulzer mold) is that they don't block anyone so it's not a problem if either McNabb or Ruhwedel earn an NHL job in camp and it doesn't really matter if the young players need a half season or whatever to get to the NHL.

If they want a Weber-esque type of bottom pairing guy, someone who will block shots, hit, and play hard in his own zone -- Mark Fistric is UFA in Edmonton. As a #6 option, he's not a puck mover.

Not a lot of mean on D now. I think this is the type of veteran they will try to add.

I know the defense isn't "mean" right now, but why? Weber-Ruh/Pysyk is an excellent bottom pairing that will allow either kid to adjust to the grind of a full-time season.

Fistric slots Pysyk/Weber and Myers up the depth chart for no tangible benefit other than the occasional open ice hit. And he wouldn't sign to be the 7th.
