Torres is now occupying the spot Matt Cooke occupied for years. I always thought Cooke's "dirtiness" was counterproductive, dating all the way back to when they signed the guy I knew of as "that guy from Vancouver who knees everybody."

Torres is a bit better scorer with better size, but Cooke's less likely to get a bad penalty, less likely to get ejected, less likely to do something that causes retaliation and better at killing penalties, so him.

Cooke should have taken the helmet off. Visor was protecting him.
Penguins fan. Agree.

Only if he were an idiot. You know what happens when you're fighting well out of your weight class and you take off your helmet?

You get knocked senseless, separate your shoulder hanging on for dear life, then your season is over. Brilliant.

It was incumbent on Cooke to fight, not bow and curtsy to an enforcer looking to take his head off.

My answer to that question is if a player is out there playing the kind of hockey Cooke used to play (and Torres does play) he's already an idiot. May as well man up and get what's coming to you.

I like them both when they played for the Canucks but I would give the edge to Torres because of his devastating hits in the playoffs.

He was already an idiot so he should do something exceedingly idiotic?

"I should not only fight, but fight an established enforcer even though I'm an agitator, plus take off my helmet so he can throttle me unimpeded and I can possibly lose the season hurting both myself and my team."

Yeah, that would be stupid, selfish, and unprecedented. But to each his own.

Both are absolute scum. I wouldn't want either on my team b/c I have no desire to cheer for players who have no regard for others safety/well-being.

Nobody told Cooke he needed to be a cheapshotting SOB. If the cost of being such a thing is too high, he's got nobody to blame but himself.

Even without a helmet, Thornton would have been giving Cooke more of a chance than he ever gave Savard.

Edit: as to the "unprecedented" part, that's absolutely false. This idea of weight classes is relatively recent. Used to be if you wanted to live by the sword, the other team's toughest guy would just grab you and the referees would put their hands on their hips watching as you learned your lesson. Didn't matter if you were a 5'2 rat or a 6'4 scorer.

Take a look at Scott Stevens' fight card some time. Wasn't other star players that ever came asking questions about the liberties he took.

Is that a joke?
