Personally, I'd be more inclined to honour MacInnis and Fleury over Nieuwendyk in Calgary, but that's just me.

Also, anyone think Chelios might have an outside chance for Chicago?

if he ends up going back for whatever reason for a season or two, probably, but otherwise i don't think that spending less than half his career there will do it

Super Joe is a lock of course. Not sure about Forsberg, it depends on him returning for the Avs and leading them to other Stanley Cups.

I'm quite sure, Foote will get his number retired, he has been a true leader for years, he's the heart and soul of the Avs, next to Sakic.

As of today, I doubt Blake's number will be retired.

I'm pretty sure he has a Vezina. I'd have to check out a list of past winners to confirm.....
He did. But, I was talking in terms of cups, not individual awards.

Foote and Sakic for sure. Montreal better retire the numbers of Dryden and Robinson before they retire Koivu or Theodore

For Ottawa, none right now. However, if Alfredsson leads the to a cup a couple of times I could see his going up. Same with Hossa. If he stays with the team for the rest of his career and continues to score 35+ goals a season, I think he has a chance. Maybe Spezza if he becomes a great centerman. And if a guy like Chara or Redden win the Norris a few times in the next 10 years, then they have a shot as well.

The shoe-ins around the league right now are Yzerman, Stevens, Sakic, Brodeur, Macinnis and maybe a guy like Naslund if he playes a few more years and wins a cup in Vancouver.

obviously Yzerman, Sakic and Messier

I think Koivu for Montreal and Linden for Vancouver as well...also agree with Robitaille, Leetch, and MAYBE Chelios with Chicago

yeah, that certainly is true. I forgot how long he was in Montreal for before joining them. at any rate, I still think of him as a Blackhawk

Modano's a shoe-in in Dallas. Not even a question.

If Lehtinen wins another Selke or two (bringing the total to 5 or 6) he'd get consideration. If Nieuwendyk, Hatcher or Hull would have finished their career here, I could see them going up as well, but they didn't, so bygones.

Morrow/Turco are possibilities waaaay down the road, depending on the paths their careers take. But it's far to early to even give them nominal consideration.

I don't know, it's possible. He's been with the team for 10 years, has been captain, and is the franchise's all-time leading scorer, so it could happen.

#30 Martin Brodeur, New Jersey: Almost a lock, as long as he doesn't fall off the face of the Earth.

#4 Scott Stevens, New Jersey: A lock, IMO.

#11 Mark Messier, Edmonton and New York: Definitely a lock.

#19 Steve Yzerman, Detroit: Another lock.

#19 Joe Sakic, Colorado: Another lock.

That's about it.
In addition to Messier, Brian Leetch is a lock to have his #2 retired in NY. Richter's banner retirement has pretty much assured that both Mess and Leetchie will be joining him in the rafters.

Number 16 goes in the rafters the day Hull finally hangs up the skates. MacInnis' should be retired as well.

Pronger will get consideration, and this is just long term projecting but Jackman too.

As Darth Milbury already mentioned, there is no way that Shanahan will get his jersey retired in Detroit. Take a look at the few players who got that honor, he is simply not on their level.

I think you're right. I don't think another four years of Blake(even if he decides to come back) will get his sweater in the rafters.

At this point, I'd say we'd have a better chance of seeing #14 hanging from the rafters.

In the future, hopefully we'll see #23 and 24.

I think most people mentioned Brodeur and Stevens as locks for the Devils. I'm sure they will eventually get Ken Daneyko into the rafters in the swamp (They better!). Also, if Scott Niedermayer ends up signing a long term contract in NJ, he's also a lock to get his number retired (3 time cup winner, Norris winner and future captain of the Devils after Stevens retires provided Nieds stays).

As big of a Shanny fan as I am, there is no way he should get his jersey retired. Only three ways a player should have their jersey retired by a team, A. The play their entire (15-20 year) careers there (hof), they are the player that comes to be identified with the team (Hull in St. Louis, Stevie Y in Detroit, Chelios in Chicago), or they are like top 3 to ever play the game (Gretz, Mario, Howe caliber). Oh and they have to be amazingly good. Stevie Y is a lock for the Wings, and Lids a strong possibilty if he players for a few more seasons (played his entire career with the Wings and has the hardware and stats to back it up). Guys like Cheli and Shanny should not have their numbers retired by the Wings. They just haven't done enough as the likes of Howe, Sawchuck, Lindsey, and Abel for the Red Wing organization.

I think everyone here is being way too generous.

If it were up to me 1 or 2 players tops a decade would be retired, that being league-wide. You have to conserve and give it only to the players that really impacted a team consistently for a long period of time (Obviously there's exceptions for extenuating circumstances - Bill Barilko).

I think it's ridiculous to give them out like candy, it loses it's meaning and soon #s will need to be done in triple digits
