Edler isn't a dirty player. Was that hit reckless? Yes. Intentional? I doubt it.

Doesn't look like he was trying to hurt him...just doesn't look like he wanted to change his course after Staal leaned forward.

Intentional or not, that's a franchise player suffering a potentially significant injury at a charity event... it's pretty sad either way.

looked 100% intentional to me unless someone can please explain what Edler was trying to do?

look at Edler's stick... it's high off the ice and he doesn't even try to go after the puck or go for a hit

just glides on in and doesn`t even attempt to move... disgusting

Probably not intentional, just incredibly stupid and reckless, which is almost as bad. At no point did Edler seem to be lined up with Staal's body. What the hell is he doing???

Should be suspended for the rest of the tournament at the very least.

Wow! That was incredibly dirty and looked intentional to me.

I hope Staal is okay, but judging by the amount of pain he's in, chances are there's some damage.

It makes you wonder if Staal chooses to play again in the WC.

Whether you want to call it dirty or not is irrelevant - it a HORRIBLE play by Edler. He should be kicked out of the tournament (either for being 'dirty' or for being extremely reckless, take your pick).

We're talking about athletes that have the awareness, reaction time and hand-eye co-ordination to re-direct 90+mph shots in mid-air. With that in mind, there is NO EXCUSE whatsoever for Edler to have hit Staals knee. NONE. He was skating right at him, could see him, and did not attempt anything that even remotely resembled a legal check. Had he at least tried to make a legal check, I could chalk it up to an unfortunate accident, but that didn't happen.

Regardless of how you see it, Edler made either an extremely dirty or an extremely wreckless play and it's 100% on Edler, IMO.

I hope Staal is ok and recovers quickly.

Staal didn't try to move to the side either?

Agree that it was a reckless play and that he should be suspended for it.

However, Edler's awareness and reaction time hasn't exactly been stellar lately. I wonder if this is a continuation from part of the season and the playoffs where he has been guilty of indecisiveness and poor decision making quite frequently.

Glides and makes no attempt to turn away from the hit would be more accurate. Like he was on a track.

Brutal.

Are you ****ing kidding me ???

He should not play in the medal round, and I would give him stop for 10 international games. Horrible, horrible play. It was intentional and malicious.

Unfortunate collsion ..

you didn't watch it, did you ?

I was very surprised with how Canada reacted to the hit. I was sure of some sort of retaliation. But nope. Lack of heart?

I absolutely don't care what people here think about it. To me, it was clearly intentional and disgusting. He should never play again in that tournament. I'm totally sure, he'll gets suspension for the rest of the whc.

So Edler intentionally in a game VS Canada where they need to win and is underdogs, he decides although he knows he's the best defender to make a stupid tackling to intentionally injure Eric Staal and cost the Swedish team 5 minutes in Boxplay and propably a win for Canada?

Didn't you see the reaction to him after he got called? He looked pissed off and threw his stick away.

I would say it was an unfortunate collision but Canadians seem to suffer from bias when it comes to Canada that suddenly all logical thinking goes out the backdoor.

Personally the way the hit looks to me is this. Elder had Staal lined up for a perfectly normal hit and then for whatever reason tried to bail out of it at the last second, but didn't get out of the way in time.

I have no idea why he didn't just follow through with the hit, which probably would have done less damage to either player. (Maybe because Staal lost the puck and he didn't want to get a penalty under IIHF rules, but who knows)

It doesn't look malicious to me, but there is certainly a case to be made that it was reckless because of the way he bailed out of the hit. I think you could make a case for a suspension, but I don't see a massively long one coming down.

Typical dirty, wreckless play. Par for the course for Canucks players.

To the people saying that he should've have time to completely avoid Staal. Look at that second angle, Edler steamrolled past him, he just had microseconds to bail out of the hit and he looked like he tried doing it as best as he could.

Like I said, bad accident. That's it. Not sure how you can take it to be a dirty hit.
Not sure if you know what's dirty and what's not.

I can't object to the 5 major, but I don't think the intent was bad. Eric was almost standing still and Edler wasn't moving fast. The impact was really unfortuneate with Eric's knee bent and the blade firm against the ice.

Wow. I won't say if it's intentional or not, don't really know, but that's a dirty and reckless ****ing hit.

I know what it's like to lose an amazing player from a hit like this. Absolutely disgusting.
