Walking several miles (ideally) while using most of your body hitting a small white ball with exact precision several times until you get it into a small hole in the ground? That the professionals in the sport have to train for years and tens or hundreds of thousands of repetitions to even be REASONABLY good?

Um yeah, athletic activity.

For me, golf is like bowling, darts, billiards, etc.

It's a skill game and not an athletic activity, IMO.

Except unlike bowling, darts and billiards, golf has some of the top athletes in the world playing it. Do you have to be an amazing athlete to play it? No, but that's the answer for pretty much any sport.

What is your definition of "top athletes"?

Or do you mean that athletes like to do it as a hobby in their free time?

Agreed. If you can drink beer, play the "game", and do reasonably well its not considered an athletic activity.

I can drink beer while playing baseball, that makes it not a sport?

Baseball or football aren't athletic activities either

Depends on the amount, the same as golf. Besides, most people don't do "reasonably well" at golf when they're sober.

So being drunk means you don't care when you don't do reasonably well

Perhaps ironic in that could describe both the life foregone by the parent during the formative years of their kids, as well as the teenage years of their kids themselves...

Major companies don't put millions and millions in sponsorships of individuals who just "play a game". Golf is a worldwide KNOWN sport. Golf on TV, golf equipment and clothing, golf athletes, golf courses, golf domes, golf lessons, and anything remotely related to golf, create billions in profits annually.

Little insignificant "games" don't do that. Major sports do.

Between the little sports shops littering the country, to major worldwide companies like Nike .... They ALL view Golf as a sport, played by athletes. Why? Because IT IS an athletic activity. But of course they all must be wrong. Granted, most sports are games technically.

1. Nothing prevents major companies from spending millions to sponsor or promote a "game" either.
2. By the logic in both your post, and my #1 above, is poker now a "sport"?

Companies sponsor all sorts of entertainers that can move product. Athletes, rappers, musicians, etc.

It's all about moving product and not whether something is a sport or a game.

Players at the World Series of Poker have sponsors. Are they athletes, too?

An athlete that has some of the best abilities possible? An athlete is nothing more than someone who excels at something like dexterity, endurance, strength, mental focus, coordination, etc. A guy like Tiger has some of the best coordination and endurance you'll find.

Have you ever heard of Poker?

Whether or not somebody sponsors something has nothing to do with whether or not it's a sport. Nike Sponsors Golf because they sell Golf-wear and it makes financial sense for them to do so.

There's nothing athletic about swinging a golf club IMO. Look at the average golfer and then compare them to the average baseball player, basketball player, football player, or hockey player.

The only golfer who doesn't look useless outside of a course is Tiger.

Of course nothing "prevents" it. But unless the game is a major sport, it's usually not hundreds of millions. With a global profit of billions and billions.

Is poker an athletic activity? Yes? Game and sport. No? Not a sport.

Just my O.

That's pretty generic (which you have to be to cover golfers). If I'm the best guy in the world at catching popcorn in my mouth, am I an athlete? That takes good "hand-eye" coordination.

I don't know what endurance has to do with golf. They just walk around and occasionally swing a club over the course of several hours. It's not like it's physically straining or strenuous.

I'm not going to have an argument about a sport with someone who clearly knows nothing about it.

You're right, most people actually ride around in carts between the holes.

I like golf, I've played 100+ holes of golf in my life. You're not going to have an argument because golf isn't even remotely a sport and I've yet to see one argument that is even close to persuasive. Golf is a very skilled game, it probably has the steepest learning curve of any game or sport I've ever played. The guys who play it well at the PGA level are just as commendable as the guys who play in the NBA, NHL, or NFL. But at the end of the day, there's nothing athletic about golf.

People need to stop letting their personal feelings make them so defensive over something. Just because you like golf doesn't mean you need to get all angry when somebody doesn't think it's a sport. Golf being a game is in no way derogatory unless you are insecure.

It's getting close to impossible to have a discussion on this board without people getting angry.

No question.
