Mathletic's Final Rankings for the 2013 NHL Draft (Updated June 29th)

My rankings are based on data. So, I built a statistical model based on a wide range of data from production to size and whatnot. The model spits out numbers on who will become the best player from 1st to last. This is not a mock draft, so I'm not trying to predict the actual oder in which players will be selected.

I haven't put time on producing specific output values like expected games played and whatnot. I'll try to do so for next year.

So, you'll find my overall rankings of all positiions, then players listed by league and position. Also, for the 3rd post, say you had the 20th overall pick and the equivalent pick in subsequent rounds. If you followed my lists this is how your draft would have turned out in the past.

I'll post my 2014 Draft Rankings sometime this summer.

Some comments on the rankings

- There's not a big gap between the top 3 players. The top 3 produce similar values. MacKinnon, beaing the steadier, holds the top spot for that reason even though Drouin had a stronger year. I'd say Barkov also had a better year than MacKinnon, though they're quite similar.

- Nichushkin has been a big riser in my rankings due to his play in the KHL. I thought up to this point he showed very little production for the talent he had but things changed quite a bit with his play in the KHL. That said, there's still quite a bit of variation in his numbers, so I'd say buyers beware.

- Overall, for me, there's a top 3, then Jones.

- Best value I'm seeing at the draft would be Bigras, Wallmark, Poirier, Lees, Brodzinski and Lotz.

Feel free to ask any questions or make any comments. I know there's rarely a concensus on stuff I post

UPDATE: I updated my rankings on June 15th.
FINAL UPDATE: June 29th.

Wow. Lots I don't agree with, some I do. Interesting. Don't really have time to post my thoughts right now, though.

Cool stuff. Obviously have my own opinions on certain players (Nurse and Erne, primarily) I think should go much higher, but that's the point of these rankings. Fun stuff, cheers.

If Wallmark is such an excellent value, perhaps we can start calling him Wallmart.

Like I said, this is not a mock draft (as in predicting who will be picked where) but rather a prediction of who will become the better players in this draft. Perhaps I should change the Round 1-7 labels to 1-30...-210

I'll re-post something I said about Jones in a previous thread.

"My main arguments for having MacKinnon, Drouin and Barkov ahead of Jones would be the following. The top forwards in the game tend to impact the game more so than top d-men and top goalies.

Simplifying things down to a minimum, I would not trade Alex Pietrangelo for Carey Price nor would I trade Steven Stamkos for Alex Pietrangelo.

I think high end forwards are more rare than high end d-men. If we take a look at some of the high end forwards in the league we'd find that most of them would have been selected very high in the draft. For example, Crosby, Malkin, Stamkos, Tavares, Spezza, Kovalchuk, Seguin, etc. There would some lower picks like Giroux, Neal, Eberle and so on, there are some but there are fewer than there would be for D's and goalies.

For instance, on defense guys like Weber, Chara, Lidstrom, Boyle, Yandle, Burns, Visnovski, Byfuglien, Keith, Subban, etc. were available later in their draft years.

Also, d-men tend to be more sensitive to the team they are one. A good d-man put on a weaker team won't shine as much as he'd be on a good team, whereas forwards tend to be more consistent.

I give MackInnon, Drouin and Barkov the same grades I'd give to players like Stamkos, Tavares, Kane and so on, so it's almost by default they end up high on the list. That said, it's not like Jones isn't a premium prospect."

This is what I came here to post. Also think Mantha will slip and highly doubt Desrosiers goes ahead of Fucale..

Good job, its always interesting to have researched and sometimes much more personal ranking, that obviously has some work and analysis in it than almost copy pasted rankings.

I agree that Wallmark has some under the radar talent, and do not agree that some players like say, Nurse, will end up being worst than some players listed above him, but the reasoning is interesting.

Søberg not on the list at all?

If Florida can come away with MacKinnon and Zadorov, it's highway robbery.

- Although Jones had a wonderful year, it's almost impossible for d-men to test as high as forwards like MacKinnon, Drouin and so on. The numbers show that forwards generally provide more value to a team. Also, I'd give Jones a similar grade I gave to PIetrangelo.

Feel free to ask any questions or make any comments. I know there's rarely a concensus on stuff I post

knowing you do your rankings based on numbers, this is what i had in question, at the time of drafting you say jones and pietrangelo have similar grades, my question to you is based on your numbers would you say jones is going to be higher or lower producer than pietrangelo is now/ or was expected to be at the time of the draft.

At the time of the draft I'd have Pietrangelo ahead offensively but still pretty close. No big difference between PP and ES either in the sense that Pietrangelo pojects equally better at ES than on the PP compared to Jones.

I would also have Pietrangelo as being more likely to reach his pontential than Jones.

No Søberg doesn't make my final list. I'd agree that for Florida to get both MacKinnon and Zadorov would be a big bonus.

Thanks, Math...really interesting take on things. Not a mock draft, but an attempt to predict and rank future performance.

HF offers any number of redraft threads that look back in time and try to re-rank the draft as it should have been. With your model, however, it's almost like you're attempting to do this in real time -- a peak into the future as to what the 2013 redraft might look like in, say, ten years. Interesting.

Okay, so I have some questions about the big (and bigger) movers between your February model and today. Here are a few that caught my eye:

Nichushkin - 45 to 5
Erne - 21 to 32
Wennberg - 51 to 21
Horvat - 56 to 23
Burakovsky - 49 to 72
Lehkonen - 26 to 15
Dickenson - 42 to 65
Compher - 53 to 27
Mueller - 32 to 56
Duclair - 20 to 40
Bjorkstrand - 24 to 73

I'm just curious how your model accounts for bigger jumps in these rankings over a three month period. Any thoughts would be most appreciated.

Again, thanks for sharing the results of your analysis.

Thanks for the reply!

Nichushkin - Kinda like I said in the little comment section of my first post. The main reason Nichushkin has risen so much is because of his play in the KHL. Up to this year or even up to his KHL games, he was a marginal player production wise. However, despite its small sample size, it's very unlikely that a marginal player would do this well in the KHL. So, his recent production is weighted more heavily, hence the huge jump.

Erne and Duclair - I'll comment on both at once as they're pretty much in the same boat. Up to mid season they were right on par to being top 15 picks in my book. However, their play and production completely stalled for the last 2-3 months of the season. I haven't seen this too often with prospects but they are such cases. Added to the fact that players like Poirier and others actually stepped up their game, they got hit on both sides, that is production going down and other players rising.

Wennberg and Lehkonen - Both rose for the same reason. It's not so much that their production changed that much. It's mostly due to the fact that I'm still tweaking various values for league equivalencies. Both the Sm-Liiga and Allsvenskan rose so, their value also went up in my rankings. They're also good producer in their own league, so that's why they'll rise compared to other players who might be marginal producers in these leagues like Burakovsky.

Horvat - He was knocked a bit earlier this season due to even strength play. That said, he had a very strong end to the season at ES and overall which rose his stock quite a bit in my rankings.

Burakovsky - Talent doesn't seem to translate on paper. He's had some good stretches offensively last year in Juniors, that said, it hasn't translated yet to the Allsveskan. Top prospects are expected to produce more at this level of hockey.

Dickenson - Production relative to the team steadily declined throughout the season. His defensive play seems to be good but not enough to compensate for diminishing offense.

Compher - Same holds for most of the USA NTDP. My previous rankings of those guys were mostly projections based on last year and very little of this year. Since mid-season, the NTDP U18 team played more USHL games. Added to the U18 tournament. So, I have more data to work with making it easier to grade them. Compher played well throughout the year, so that helped him rising in my rankings.

Mueller - More of a case that he gets shelled for playing on a poor team and not being a particularly offensive player. It's harder to evaluate those guys when there's not as much data to work with as say for the NHL. The kid played in Switzerland also the past seasons and I don't have tall the data I need for the junior leagues there.

Bjorkstrand - For most of the season I use the height and weight data published by the leagues. In the majority of cases, the values are actually pretty good. But there's always 1 or 2 that are way wrong. Bjorkstrand turned out to be one of those cases. Even though height and weight are vastly overvalued I find by most, such extreme cases have to be taken into account.

Weight especially works roughly as a logarithmic or root function. That is, weight is very important for players under roughly 160-165, but once you're over the 180 mark for instance, there's virtually no impact, especially for forwards. For most the year I worked under the assumption that Bjorkstrand's weight was roughly 170. However, I always use the CSS data as final markers and they ended up listing Bjorkstrand at 157 or so. Hence, the big drop. It's not clear as to whether 160 lbs players can't adapt because they're too small or because they simply don't take their careers seriously.

I'd need the combine data to work this out. However, I've had a hard time getting this data for previous drafts. I have the complete data only for the 2009 Draft. I suspect that smaller players who are in great shape (like Brendan Gallagher for instance) are much more likely to reach the NHL than those who don't test as well. That said, the only consistent data I have for now is height and weight published by the CSS.

So, as you can see, there can be many reasons why a player can rise or fall in these types of rankings. Not to mention there's still plenty of work to do on these types of models. I do this on my own and during my free time, so it's not like I could work with a pro team with people doing this full-time and have access to better data.

Respect for the work you put into this but I have a hard time believing Wennberg falling to 21 and Bigras going in the top 15.

Like I said, it's not a prediction of where guys will be picked but rather a prediction of who will be the better players 10-15 years from now.

How do you calculate their positions in your rankings? What kinda calculations you made to get Mac as 1. Droun as 2. Barkov as 3.? I mean, how you simple put came out with that order? Whats the data behind it. How do you count point production in very different leagues? How you adjust Barkovs stats to "easier" leagues (point production wise)?

Being a Minnesota guy I tend to look and see where other people rank Minnesota prospects, one name I'm not seeing anywhere on this list is Connor Hurley...I apologize if I missed him.

Søberg and Nørstebø are both 10-15 players out of the swedish league alone. Nørstebø played 17 SEL games and all playoff games for Brynäs and still he isn't higher than 204? Extremely mature for his age, and plays a smart game. And Søberg not even on the list is ridiculous IMO, he will go in the top4 rounds.

One of few things I agree with is that MacKinnon is the best player in the draft.

I appreciate the effort you put into this but full heartedly disagree with your having Seth Jones at #4, doubt he lasts past #1.

Guys, please understand.

He isn't ranking players based on the NOW, but using statistics to figure out how good they will be in ten years. It is no indication of how a team will pick now, so Jones at 4, Nurse and Zadorov in the 30s etc. are not reflections of Mathletic himself, just his statistical formulas.

I like this list, and it's quite interesting.
