No deal yet on NHL participation in Sochi

I know that everyone keeps saying that "a deal is in the work" but it is almost Summer. Is anyone else getting just a little bit nervous?

It's definitely odd, but i can't believe NHL would let this marketing opportunity slip away. I mean why have NHL premieres in Europe to promote the game and not in the Olympics. Olympics >>>> NHL premiere from a growth standpoint.

No matter how stupid you think NHL leadership is,they are not stupid enough to forbid the participation of its players in Olympics.

No. I think it was Juhani Tamminen, the Finnish commentator, who said (he's involved with the people who're negotiating this) a week or two ago that there's no doubt the NHL will participate in the Olympics, it was just a matter of taking care of a few minor details or something.

I do still think a deal will get done but it isn't a sure thing. There are many US owners who are against the idea as they do not see the benefit in their own markets.

I read an interview with Rene Fasel in a Swiss Newspaper. Both sides are interested that NHL players participate but it's still (only) a monetary issue. Would be stupid by both sides if no agreement was reached

I wonder how NBC would like the NHL refusing to participate

I'm not nervous at all, NHL won't shoot themselves in the foot, they are not stupid.

Interest for olympic hockey is huge in Canada, they wouldn't like it either.

Just ask yourseleves 2 questions
Is the NHL the league that shuts itself down every few years over labour negotiations?
Is the IOC the group that ticked off Hockey Canada in 2010 by not allowing them to use the HC logo and crest demanding a new crest just for the Olys so the IOC could get a cut of HC gear sales?
I think it could go either way

That was a blessing in disguise, it turned out pretty well, majority of Canadians have that sweater now and the design is way more elegant then the original logo. It's the perfect Olympic logo encompassing the diversity across the country.

They are coming. The IIHF just released a press release on it like a week or two ago. Everyone (including the NHL) is operating under the assumption they're coming. The Finnish Ice Hockey Federation even listed the dates when the NHL will go on Olympic break and when they'll be back. From what I gathered, they have some issues with who's going to pay for the insurance of all the players, but everyone seems to think it will work itself out.

During yesterday's finals they said on german tv that they have a deal in place but it isn't signed yet. I doubt that someone who is directly involved with this would feel the need to lie about it to someone he knows. Should just be a matter of getting everything done properly before announcing it.

Didn't Ovechkin and a few other Russian NHLers say they'll be playing either way, permission or not?

Part of me hopes it does come to that....players boycotting their NHL allegiances to play for their country. Would be interesting to see the fallout.
