I'm starting to think that the Oilers should hold on to Jason Smith. He showed a lot of loyalty by signing a 4 year contract and he's done a great job as an Oiler over the years. I personally think that Edmonton will address the problems down the middle by finally picking up a decent free agent...

I agree with you on all points, Cerebral. Smith's trade value is relatively high, so it MIGHT be worth cashing him in. But, I think has done great in EDM and the contract is desirable.

I don't know what "marketing demands" you think are going to create a demand for JR. But, I seriously doubt that either Chicago or PHX would have even a vague interest in him. Given his contract and recent injury history, I think there is a zero chance that Philly would get anything worthwhile for him in a deal.

JR is definitely worth more to Philly than to any other team at this point in his career. Maybe Boston would want to bring him back so he can retire in his hometown, work with Thornton, etc. I can't really think of another team that would add him, especially since he is almost exclusively a RW and not a center now.

Isbister is a dog.

I'd do it for Smith and either Torres or Hemsky.

Is that in response to the first post in the thread? If so, what makes you think Handzus is worth Smith and Torres/Hemsky?

Yes.

Never said he was, that's just what I would ask for.

Isbister is a dog and he would barely make the Flyers top 12.

It would have to be Smith + Lynch/Torres/Hemsky, etc.

Smith and Hemsky would cost us more just Zeus, to be fair. Smith and Torres would be a little bit more manageable, I think. And don't you know that WE trade OUR defenseman prospects to Edmonton, not the other way around?

The thing is we don't have to trade Handzus.

If Edmonton were to want him, they would have to come to the table with a nice offer.

Smith is a really good second pair defensmen, but he isn't getting any younger, and will be an UFA in 2006.

Torres and Hemsky are good prospects, but haven't proven to be second liners yet.

I'd throw in a third, but that's it.

Smith and Hemsky/Torres/Lynch for Handzus and a third.

Smith signed a 4 year deal this past summer... he won't be a UFA in 06.

My bad.

If that is the case with Smith that certainly changes things.

I still wouldn't want Isbister though.

I'd deal Handzus, the third, and add Sharp to the deal for Smith and one of the three young guys I mentioned.

I think you're being unreasonable. It isn't like he'd play the whole season or anything. Reconsider.

Likewise the Oilers don't have to trade Smith. Except one team needs a number one Center(which Handzus is not) and the other needs a Smith type defenceman from what other Flyers fans have mentioned.
