Kaberle

Would you take him at league minimum? Or is he beyond that?

I forgot he was still in the NHL, honestly. First off, can anyone tell me what he can do, since that'll be faster than listing what he can't do. Can he still be a decent PP QB, or has that ship sailed too?

He can't play at the NHL level anymore. How's that?
Seriously I think he's done, he'll probably play overseas next season.

That's an acceptable 'list'.

i remember him giving the puck away, totally bailing on a potential hit against the Canucks in the 2011 final that led to a Canucks 2 on 1. That's not a player anyone should want on their team.

Id take him in Calgary on a 1 year deal.

We have a short list of experienced NHL d-men and he can be a #5 guy for us.

Purely a stop-gap solution.

Too leafs for 1.5m then retire right after. Wanna see him retire as a leaf but not to play. Even if this happens in a few years I'm happy. One of my favourite players growing up.

Far from down, just not worth his cap hit.

He was really bad with the bruins, and with the Canes he was simply out of shape, after being traded to the Habs he had 22 points in 43 games as a hab, roughly 40-45 point paces in a full year. This season he was pretty good, played the first 10 games, had 3 points, and with Markov back, he barely got any pp time, and would get the last 30 seconds of pp on the 2nd unit, and in those 10 games, I think he was in the ice for only about 2 goals against.

Only reason he played 10 games was because its pointless to have him in the lineup and not play on the power play, and also to avoid having him get hurt, because you can't buy out an injuries player.

He is still very weak and soft in his own end, but if you need a power play QB that will get you about 40 points in a season, but can only play 12-13 min on 5on5, and you can probably get him 1.5-2M than Kaberle would be a good option.

Much as he's soft as melted butter and damn near useless defensively (unless he's having a good night), he is still able to quarterback a powerplay and is reasonably solid offensively. If kept in a depth role and played MAB style, he could be effective - at not more than a million or so.

No value.. He's lost a step and is not a top 4 dman. Age is also an issue.

Interview him first and offer him a camp tryout. Find out if he's hungry for it. He sure seemed more than capable of playing in the NHL during his stint with the Habs. But he spent the year in bubble-wrap and I don't think any of us knows how he's maintained his conditioning or what his mindset might be in the wake of that. He might not want to go through the hassle of fighting for a contract. At this point in his career, he may feel he's kind of beyond that.

From what little we did see, I think if he wants it, he can easily play in the NHL. Possibly in a 2nd pairing role even, if a team really needed that element. He played pretty heavy minutes for the Habs when they acquired him, and he seemed to get quicker in the very abbreviated glimpses we had in Year 2 before the bubble-wrapping.

He'll still be soft in his own end, but he has played long enough in the league that he knows how to adjust. We didn't like the softness side of his defense, but I wouldn't say that he was making dumb errors or giveaways or anything like that. Habs just could not afford any extra softness on D, though, and had no particularly effective pairing for him. Maybe some other team could afford it and cover for it better.

On transition and PP QB duties he was entirely fine. Even a positive asset when the Habs first got him.

To be fair, he more than aquitted himself respectably this season in the few games he played. He did the good play at the good time, was not a huge defensive liability.

The man simply was too expensive for too long, and management didn't wanted to risk him injuring anything before we could buy him out.

Offensively he's still fine. Defensively... Not so much.

He's also only 10 games away from 1000. I'm sure he'll get a chance with a struggling pp looking for depth.

he never really was great defensively, even when he played for the leafs, i liked kabs when he was here in toronto for many years, but as this stage of the game not sure there would be many takers out there, but then again everyone thought the same about redden and souray, and look how they turned out.

in terms of salary? probably about 750K for 1 year, which he'll get offered more to play in the KHL or back home anyway.

I think he can still be a solid NHL player, Bergevin had just made his mind up about Kaberle at the beggining of the season. Wasn't willing to risk injury, when he came to Montreal he was good offensively. I think if you use him in the right role and shelter his minutes he will bring good offense to a team, he likely won't cost much. A couple of teams will want to take a chance on him.

I'm sure a team will offer him something around $1 000 000, probably under that, if they have depth problems at defence.

I wouldn't let the guy pay to me to let him play. I can't believe other teams fans actually want to sign him after the way he's flamed out with 2 separate teams since signing his last contract. He's done. And his play is now everything most team's fan bases here love to hate - one of the softest d-men in the league who can't play defense and refuses to hit anyone, all while not even being that great offensively anymore.
