Vancouver Canucks @ Edmonton Oilers || Sept 21 8:00 || CBC HNIC

wish pitlick was playing, i know he wont make the team, but hes done well and they should be riding him until they cut him, he's played decently.

wish he still played center, i'd give him the edge over the other three "competing" (read: being invisible) for the job.

Oilers lineup:

Smyth-Hall-Hemsky
Perron-Gagner-Eberle
Hamilton-Khaira-Yakupov
Jones-Acton-Brown

Nurse-Petry
Grebeshkov-Belov
Fedun-Hunt

LaBarbera
Rimmer

Canucks lineup:

Higgins Schroeder Hansen
Shinkaruk Horvat Kassian
Sestito Santorelli Weise
Booth Jensen Gaunce Lain

Edler Tanev
Corrado Alberts
Sauve Weber

Lack
Cannata

I'd love to see Pitlick get that extra spot and have the option to do something like...

Eberle-Hopkins-Yakupov
Perron-Hall-Hemsky
Joensuu-Gagner-Pitlick
Smyth-Gordon-Jones
Brown, Eager

Ference-J.Schultz
Smid-Petry
N.Schultz-Hunt?
Larsen

Dubnyk
Labarbera

PP1; Hall-Hopkins-Eberle/Ference-Yakupov
PP2; Smyth-Gagner-Hemsky/Hunt?-J.Schultz

PK1; Perron-Gordon/Ference-N.Schultz
PK2; Hall-Nugent Hopkins/Smid-Petry

then you have lander, klefbom, omark, grebs, belov down in OKC.

Pitlick on the third line? IMO he was not good enough to even be considered for a roster spot.

He has impressive speed and can forecheck pretty well. I'd have him on the 4th line as an energy type player.

All are better NHL players than Pitlick, who honestly hasn't really established even established himself as a good AHL player. Maybe those guys aren't good enough. But they are most certainly a better option than Pitlick.

Pitlick has a hell of a lot to prove at the AHL level before he should get any consideration at the NHL level.

For fourth line duty or as a 13F?

Yes.

Third line?

Yes to Smyth and Jones, maybe to Eager, no to Brown.

I don't like Hall at C. Not that he can't play the position, he can, I just find him far more effective on the LW.

Any mock lineups with Gagner at anything other than 2C is kidding themselves.

It's interesting that they've yet to start Yakupov on a line with an NHL player.

Game one:
Omark-Arco-Yakupov

Game two:
Hamilton-Arcobello-Yakupov

Game three:
Hamilton-Khaira-Yakupov

I haven't been watching him in the AHL but based on this preseason Pitlick has impressed me more than most players in our bottom six not named Joenssu and Gordon

I know it's pre-season, but Yak on the third while old man Smytty and Hemmer are on the top line makes me sad. Yes, yes, I know Eakins said he wants to surround Hall with veterans while he makes the centre transistion, but still, it makes me sad. And yes, I know it's not likely that Yakupov will be on the third line come the start of the season, but it still makes me sad.

With that out of the way, does anyone know if CBC is going to replay this game afterwards? I'm assuming they will replay one game, but the turd Leafs are on before us, and I've seen them replay the Leaf game in Alberta, instead of an Oiler game before.

Edit: Looks like it's not getting replayed. I'm gonna have to miss this one, what a ******* bummer.

Most of these guys are NHL vets who (rightly or wrongly in the eyes of lots of us) are trying to work out there timing and get themselves ready for the regular season. They aren't guys who are fighting tooth and nail shift in and shift out.

Tyler Pitlick needs to establish what type of a player he is going to be as a professional before he can step into the NHL. He can't even make a play with the puck in pre-season. Being fast and being able to get in on the forecheck is great, but he isn't a fighter and has zero puck skill. He's not ready.

I rather see Yak play with Hall. They teared it up in the last games of the previous season. Don't know why Smyth is on the 1st line again, when he can barely skate compared to Hall and Hemmer's level.

I disagree. I have been against the Hall at center experiment for a long time now but he looks great at center outside of the late meltdown against Calgary.
Not only has he looked better on faceoffs than any of our other centers have been in a long time but he looks more comfortable away from the boards with more room to operate. He's also distributing the puck well and is surprisingly, playing positionally well defensively.
If he continues to progress at that position, I don't know how they could justify playing Gagner at center and Hall back to wing when RNH returns.

I know that it's preseason, but why is Smyth still playing with Hall and Hemsky?

Is this some kind of reward type thing?

"You're in the last year of your contract and possibly career, you can play with good players in preseason and then it's bottom 6/healthy scratch here on out."

I think the fact that he still gets over a million bucks a season is enough of a reward.

Yak on the third line again. I hope this isn't a regular occurrence come regular season.

Is it safe to assume that's Ryan Hamilton, or is Curtis healthy enough to play finally? If it's Curtis that could make for an interesting line IMO. Also excited to see how Rimmer does, if he plays well I think he could earn a contract and he'd possibly be our best G prospect.

Agreed. I think we should wait until Jones gets a few more games. I'm optimistic that he'll pick things up a bit.

But, yeah, Joensuu is very promising. And assuming that Pitlick gets cut, I think he's shown enough to deserve a call up at some point this season.

That is interesting. If Eakins does believe in pairs, maybe he believes RNH + Yakupov, Gagner + Eberle, and Hall + Hemsky are pairs? That creates three scoring pairs, and allows for the RW's to remain in their preferred position. With RNH hurt and Yak not looking good on the LW (last year), perhaps it's just dumb luck that he hasn't been paired with NHL players.

Eakins was asked who surprised him most so far at camp, and his response was Yakupov (I never heard the quote personally, but from reading responses to it here seems as if it was mentioned as a positive surprise and not a negative surprise), so I can't imagine he's punishing him. But who knows, everything could change come Monday.

I guess we're going to let Smyth ride Hall's coattails for one last moment of glory for the start of this season. Garbage. I don't buy the "need a veteran presence to help Hall adapt to center" argument. We'd be so much better off playing him with David Perron, someone that not only knows how to play LW, but can actually keep up with and anticipate Hall's offensive chances, while contributing scoring chances himself. How about we get Hall to start developing chemistry with someone that isn't a complete liability?

Based on performance alone so far, what the opening night roster should be:

Perron-Hall-Hemsky
Eberle-Gagner-Yakupov
Joensuu-Gordon-Jones
Eager-Arcobello-Pitlick
Brown/Lander

Smid-Petry
Ference-J Schultz
N Schultz-Nurse
Hunt

Dubnyk
LaBarbera

What it will be:

Old Yeller-Hall-Hemsky
Perron-Gagner-Eberle
Jones-Gordon-Yakupov
Joensuu-Acton-Brown
Eager

Smid-Petry
Ference-J Schultz
N Schultz-Garbagekov
Larsen/Belov

Dubnyk
LaBarbera

I just think we need some speed and forechecking on our 4th line
Most of the guys in our bottom six have things that they need to work on. I'm just saying that Pitlick has shown better than some of the others imo
