Leafs Will Have to Bid Against KHL for Leo Komarov

Some interesting tweets this morning

per Dmitri Chesnokov
Quote:
#Leafs Komarov: "Won't hide it - I've held negotiations with Dynamo [KHL], but I'm waiting for an offer from Toronto." (via RIAN)
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=423679

per James Mirtle
Quote:
Interesting quotes out there on Leo Komarov. Leafs will likely have to bid against KHL offer, which could make him pricey for fourth liner.
https://twitter.com/mirtle/status/336899373524975616
Quote:
Komarov had a solid season for Leafs, but he's a depth guy you can't really pay much more than $1.25-million to check and kill penalties.
https://twitter.com/mirtle/status/336901213549371392

I can't imagine the Leafs would let Komarov go back to Russia after all the struggles they had getting him over here in the first place, but at what point do they walk away and say "Too rich for our blood!" Mirtle touches on the tangibles (4th liner, penalty killer) but he shies away from the intangibles and downplays Komarov's role on the team. His fearless attitude and playing style often energized a Toronto team that too many times in 11-12 looked lifeless. As much credit as Don Cherry gives to Colton Orr and Frazer McLaren, I think equal attention should be given to Komarov who hits hard and seldom gets penalized. Interesting story to follow.

I'd probably give him up to 2.5 million. His role is pretty damn important in Toronto.

As much as I love the guy I can't see him sticking around. He will make far more in the KHL and was never going to be anything more than a bottom 6 checker in the NHL, can't really blame him if he bolts.

Please no. Komarov has become one of my favorite Leafs. He provides everything you want from a bottom 6'er. Such a troll as well!

Please get into a bidding war for a 4th line pest. The leafs fans complaints about Leo being a 3.5 million dollar cap anchor in 2 years will be outstanding after the thousands of posts proclaiming him to be the best pest in hockey

He has always said that Nhl is his dream and he has always wanted to play there. Just a way to get a better contract.

From sbnation

http://www.sbnation.com/nhl/2013/5/2...l-negotiations

- Are you happy with your season in the NHL?
- Yeah. What should I be unhappy about?

- You played mostly on the fourth line...
- I had gone to the NHL to play and I played. We played like 55 or 56 games. I participated in 49 - it's alright.

- But you didn't play a lot.
- Why do you think so? I had like 14:30 per game.

- Maybe it's time to come back to Dynamo?
- My contract with Toronto is over. There are negotiations about coming back to Dynamo. Maybe. Or I could go to Australia, I think there's a hockey league, too.

Doesn't seem like he is seriously considering going back to khl

Would love to keep him as long as it is under $1.5 million. Can't jeopardize spending too much on players like Komarov, Bozak and too a much smaller extent Gunnarsson and risk losing important players like Reimer, McClement, Phaneuf and Kessel too cap problems in the near future.

Russian UFAs get offers from the KHL all the time, this isn't exactly news. Komarov speaks the language and has history of playing there, of course they'll try to steal him away from the NHL.

I recall Leo saying last year when he signed with Toronto that he's always dreamed of playing in the NHL. Now that there's literally no risk that he'll get sent down to the AHL, why would he walk away from that dream? I'm pretty sure he's set for life with those 3 years of rubles that he earned in the KHL.

Makes no sense.

I'm pretty sure he's not set for life, and that's why he can't ignore an offer that could pay him 3 or 4 times what he'd get in North America, factoring in the lower tax rate.

We expected this and the KHL will definitely offer more money then the Leafs. Just gotta hope his desire to play in the NHL is still there. He's a machine.

It would've been a miracle if Dynamo hadn't sent him an offer. Now it all comes down to how much he wants to keep on playing in the NHL. I wouldn't count him out just yet if I were a Toronto fan.

Only if he goes all Jagr and gambles it away.

He's going to earn money in the NHL too, you know?

Not really. With the extra money he gets to play in the KHL, he can afford his own cab to the airport. When it gets down to it, he offered nothing 15 different and cheaper UFA's can't give us, let alone AHL guys.

Win-win for other teams. Either they overpay for a 4th liner, or let a hitting machine/pest go to a different league.

you know that leafs fans like a guy when you've never seen him in a trade proposal lol

i love komarov though, and i don't know why everyone is writing him off as a fourth liner. aside from offense, he's pretty much everything you would want in a third liner. he's actually shown some nice offensive potential over this year to so who knows

7m/3years

a pest with no finishing skills

...i like him, but, he's easily replaceable.
Lots of youngsters can fill his spot(all Burke did was draft potential 3rd liners anyways), and may even contribute more.

I like him and hope he stays at a reasonable price. There's no sense going into a bidding war with the KHL over him though.

Man, that sounds like a really unprofessional article. I understand that the reporter has Russian ties, but come on.

I cant believe as a Bruins fan I am saying that I enjoy watching the Leafs play, but I do. They are an exciting young team with lots of jam and lots of talent. Komarov gives them that pest, a guy who sacrifices his body for everything...but that said, with the Cap going down, they have to ask themselves how much he is really worth and not worry about outside offers. I hope they manage to keep him for their sake, but if he is looking for more than 2 per year, I think they need to let him go...good luck Leafs.

Eh, he won't get too much money. He's a fourth liner that hits a lot. Provides small offense. Not much else.

Not sure why many consider him an "ultimate troll" or "super pest". He doesn't draw an unusual amount of penalties, which is the point of being a pest. In fact, he didn't even draw one powerplay for his team in the playoffs.
