presumably the 10:30 peak is inflated by people looking for the Tonight Show.

Dunno. Probably pretty close. Michigan had a mass exodus a few years ago and a lot of the people went there.

Those are crazy local numbers! People like to say the ratings are cause of this and that. Which is true, but you are seeing some sustain growth over the years.... Also , with these two teams it's just going to give that social talk. This is just warm up for the NHL. I hope Phoenix doesn't move.

Considering their attendance and ratings for their own team still suck, no thanks.

I have not looked into the numbers but I am sure it is ALL about big markets. If we get a Nashville - Buffalo SCF or an all Canadian final, the numbers will tank.

People like to say that those ratings were low because of the lockout, which granted, definitely had some effect, but look at the teams that played in those years vs. every other year since.

Edmonton-Carolina and Anaheim-Ottawa, both a Canadian team against a non-traditional, small market American team. If those matchups happened again the next 2 years, ratings would nose dive and people would say "OMG hockey is so not popular LOL" when in reality it literally is all dependent on which teams make it to the finals.

Yeah but 2012 did pretty terribly compared to 2009-2011. As someone said, it's the markets.

Final numbers in: 6.36 million and a 2.5 rating. Average viewers dropped, but rating rose.

Sports Media Watch says that Game 1 of the 1996 Final (on a Tuesday) between Colorado and Florida drew a 5.2?!

That seems insanely high for these markets.

On top of that, Wikipedia says that Fox's 2-game coverage (Games 1 and 3) of the 1996 Final drew an average of 3.6. So it would mean that the ratings collapsed epically between Games 1 and 3 to draw a 3.6 average after a 5.2 in Game 1.

That was before the 1st dead puck era. Ratings were extremely high for all hockey (regular season, playoffs, all-star game, and the finals). Dead puck hockey (starting in 1997-98) killed ratings dead. 15 years later and the league is still trying to recover from dead puck #1. Sadly, we are slowly entering dead puck era #2.

And game 1 typical draws a much higher ratings than game 2 and game 3. That is not unusual.

Ooooh, about a half goal drop. Man, this product must suck!

Who cares about goal averages? It was the lack of chances that made dead puck hockey boring. The game is open and great right now.

Not sure I'd agree with the notion that real chances are aplenty today, with goalies so big that they can make a ton of cheap positional saves, and teams that collapse around their net to force the play on the outside.

This being said, I am not necessarily convinced that bad ratings have a lot to do with the entertainment value of a sport.
Indycar's ratings are tanking more and more, yet everybody has been praising the excitment of their races the last few years.
NFL games have been padded with almost one extra hour of unnecessary content since the 70s, and now last 3h30 for 10 minutes of actual play, yet it has not harmed them at all.

I agree a lot with what tough guy says about the dead puck era.....That was some of the worse hockey.....Even a hardcore fan like me and I couldn't justify selling that product at times to new people who have never watched hockey. The NHL is still continuing its recovery from its long duration in a coma. What this original six final does is help maybe grab those casual fans, getting those extra set of eye balls, to spread the word. After game 1. There was a lot of buzz from that game. So we'll see where we go from there
