1. I'm resigned to the fact that Torts isn't getting fired, but I'm hopeful that a full training camp will be enough time for him to tweak the system. This team isn't built to block shots and grind it out anymore, and he has to realize that by now. My first priority is to implement a system that eases the defensive zone pressure - stop collapsing, pressure everywhere, do your best to let Lundqvist see the shots.

2. Buyout Richards. I was positive his early season struggles were temporary and that he'd eventually come around. I was wrong, and the long term risk that comes with his contract is no longer worth any potential reward. Hang onto that $$$ for a little while and don't dump it on an UFA, I don't see a good target out there right now.

3. Entertain offers for MDZ. Wax poetic about Zubov all you want, but MDZ just doesn't have it in him. I'm not sure how much value is left in him at this point, but I'd think a team like Edmonton would be willing to part with some young, cheap offensive talent in exchange. He obviously won't demand one of their big 4 guys, but I'd start with them and take it from there. This team could realistically ice 3 legitimate 2nd lines after moving MDZ and doing something else with Richards' money, and that might be a good approach given the lack of available high end talent. This all hinges on the assumption that Marc Staal can return next year - they cannot afford to trade a defenseman, even one who is settling in as a mediocre player, if Staal is not available.

4. Hope that Lindberg and Fasth are ready and as good as advertised. McIlrath being ready would be nice as well.

Last, and I hesitate to even voice this opinion, but I'd also start entertaining offers for Lundqvist. If he can fetch a high end, in his prime, offensive player plus some extras, you'd have to think long and hard about it. Lundqvist is clearly this team's best player, and in my opinion the best goalie in the game, but I am not convinced that you can build a Stanley Cup winning team with 10+% of your payroll tied up in a goalie AND no premium young talent in your lineup. When you're talking bang for your buck, I'm afraid the evidence shows that the difference between the best goalie in the game and the, let's say, 13th best, is not nearly as big as it is at other positions. You need to think about this stuff when allocating cap space, as hard as it is to do so.

Bruins just scored. We're done. It'll be interesting to see how this all plays out.

Back in the unbounded optimism before the season started, I wrote that I expected the Rangers to take a step back this season. I didn't like the makeup of the middle of the roster and it's tough following up a season like last year. What has happened here this year was not unexpected.

Of course, I could have never expected Richards to implode, Sauer to be MIA for the whole year and the Gaborik trade.

So now, what do I expect? A really good competitive team next year. Stepan and McDonagh are on the cusp of stardom. The Gaborik trade was a ten strike. Most injuries should heal and this team will benefit from a longer season. I expect Kreider, JT and the Swedes helping strengthen the bottom six. I also think McIlrath will be a third pair defenseman by the playoffs. Sure can use his muscle.

The only thing that scares me is Lundqvist's health. He is so crucial to this team.

How far will they go? Much closer to last year than this year. And I see the window being open not only next year but for years to come.

Either Torts adjusts his system or he has to be fired.

Try trading MDZ++ for a winger like bobby ryan or someone young and that caan score.

look for mid level guys in FA to fill out our 3rd and 4th lines.

I am not convinced Brassard can handle a number 2 center consistently. Hopefully the playoffs is a sign of good things to come for him.

I think its obvious over the past 2 games Richards will be bought out this year and they will not give him a 2nd chance.

Also look for another couple of dman. one top 4 preferably right handed.

One of these years the Rangers are going to have to pull off a trade to for top 5 draft pick where we can land an offensive stud since we will never be bad enough to draft that high.

Or if we cant land a winger with MDZ as a center piece maybe try trading him in a package for a top 5 pick this year. This is more fantasy though as Mackinnon would be a score.

Hrivik will probably slot in on the 3rd line IF he can stay healthy. Good two way player.

Hagelin-Stepan-Nash
Zuccarello-Brassard-Kreider/Hrivik
(This line is risk/reward if Kreider is slotted in here)
Callahan-Lindberg-Kreider/Hrivik
Asham-Boyle-Dorsett
Fasth-Miller-Thomas/Pyatt
can slot in pretty much anywhere depending on how training camp goes and/or injuries.

McDonagh-Girardi
Staal-Del Zotto
Stralman-Moore
McIlrath-Eminger
for injuries.

I want this look on the PP
Moore
Zuccarello Brassard
Stepan Callahan

(You can switch Moore and Zuccarello if you must.)

Del Zotto McDonagh
Nash Lindberg/Hrivik/Thomas (If he makes the team)
Boyle (parked in front and fishing pucks down low)

Stick Kreider in the high slot if Lindberg/Hrivik/Thomas don't work out. Maybe Fasth if he makes the team, but I think he will need half a year in the AHL much like Hagelin.

Re-evaluate where we are half way through the year. I don't think Torts is the coach for a team like this, and would like to see him gone, but might as well give him half the year and see if he can adjust with all the youth and skill on this roster.
That roster would be lucky to crack the top 8 in the east.

You don't bench guys for one mistake, that's what leads to guys getting ice cold. That's torts biggest fault, he ruins teams creativity with this no mistakes ********. If you don't take any chances, you don't create much either.

Injuries happen but thats not terrible D depth. I rather use assets for a scoring F
Agree. Objectively, Eminger and hamma/gilroy are prob better than what most teams roll out if 2 top 6 guys are hurt. Wouldnt mind more true D prospects in the pipeline however

Get rid of Pyatt, Asham, and Richard. Center a package around MDZ to bring in Yandle to help the power play. Hope Kreider and Miller develop,

1. We need to stop packing it down on defense and trying to block every shot....and challenge the point. Besides the toll blocking all those shots takes on the body it also often slows down the breakout.
2. Team is below average on shooting. There is no one on this team whose shot scares anyone. I have to admit I was a little shocked at how average Nash shot is and I dont think I saw him take a slap shot once this year.
3. Despite having a few really great skaters we are below average in skating. We could use some more speed.
4. Dont overspend on Clowe....very averga

Girardi should go. Girardi + Boyle + high pick for Yakupov, Peckham, and Petry? I also think we should try for Stastny, DZ for Stastny straight up. Mark Streit would be nice, but I'm scared what kind of money Slats would give him.

Kreider-Stepan-Nash
Zuccarello-Stastny-Yakupov
Hagelin-Brassard-Callahan
Powe-Miller-Dorsett

McDonagh-Stralman
Staal-Streit
Moore-McIlrath
Peckham

First.

Torts needs to adjust his strategy. Simply put, WAY too much separation between the oppositions points and our wingers. Wingers need to be higher in the zone, take away the pass up high, force it to be a 3 on 3 game down low. Take your chance that Henrik can beat the other teams shooters...he's alreayd doing so anyway.

Next, flee the zone quicker, I want to see us stretching other teams out with longer passes.

I wouldn't be up for a MASSIVE change, but there's a few things that we need to do to the team.

First.

Get a dedicated PP coach and FORCE Torts to keep him on the bench. I don't care what Torts says. Stick Brian Leetch between Torts and Sully and let Leetchy handle the PP. That's it. Nothing more.

Next, make a judgement call on Richards & Clowe. I say, keep Richards. Give Richards 1 more season. I'd even consider moving him to wing. Let Clowe walk... I've been waffeling a bit on this, I just don't think he helps us. Too slow.

I think I'd also let Zucc go. Talented kid, but too small to play against these bigger teams, and his speed look like it kept getting slower and slower.

I'd try to make a move for Bobby Ryan or something like that by Trading MDZ, Pyatt++

Sign Streit. We need to have our PP fixed, Streit does it.

Go with something like this.

Ryan - Brassard - Nash
Kreider - Stepan - Callahan
Hagelin - Richards - Boyle
Dorsett - Lindberg - Miller

Girardi, Staal, MCD, Streit, Stralman, Eminger, McIlrath

That's right. 3-4 rookies.

I don't give 2 craps about winning or losing next season, I care about getting younger and faster.

Next offseason, buyout Richards, and look to use that money in keeping all our RFAs

If that math up there doesn't work...then you'll have to buyout Richards and get an adequate replacement in the top 9.

It's not like Hamrlik can get any worse. He made me long for Bickel. That's sad. Gilroy has looked surprisingly okay though. Eminger is a solid #7, but that's where he should stay.

Inferno nailed it on the head; we don't need major changes but let me reiterate:

1. Change the system for defense / penalty kill. We let up too many goals from the point. Have speed guys like Hagelin, MZA, even Nash playing forward when we are on the penalty kill. That way we can force the defensman to make a play and if we block a shot we are off to the races with a breakaway on the SHG, kills time if anything else. See how Grabner does it in NYI, Gaborik even used to kill PKs when he was first in NY.

2. Hire another coach as powerplay specialist. Bernie Nicholls was the man in LA. Maybe even bring in Leetch, he seems to break down the powerplay problems well and can help out coaching penalty killing as well since he played that position. I think he would provide a more liberal perspective to counter Torts hard grinding style.

3. Sign Mark Streit. He is the PP point specialist we need and is a veteran presence we need on the defense corps. Staals been injured for 1 season the last two years and he's only 26; everything falls on McDonagh and he's only 23 for pete's sake! To develop players offensively you need an offensive leader and Streit can fill that role for not a lot of money. Get rid of MDZ. If he isn't providing offense I don't see his real value.

4. Give Richards another chance. He deserves it. Everyone's been disappointed in him and I have been as well but he's only 32; has played some big games for us and is a veteran presence. People never say it but he really is a nice guy and is a big competitor; he will do everything he can to re-tool his game to be consistent for us next year. I think his problems are more mental than physical. If he has as bad of a year next year as he did this season then get rid of him.

5. Re-sign Ryan Clowe. He's a big body that can forecheck and score and gives up some options. We gave up too much to let him go after a few weeks.

6. RE-SIGN HENRIK LUNDQVIST! Everyone knows this - he only has one year left in his contract and we can't let him test free agency next year. He's the only one you can give a 10 year contract extension to and it will make sense.

McDonagh-Girardi
Staal/Del Zotto-Stralman

Getting a big winger for the second line would be incredible. Hopefully Lindberg can center the third line — have heard great things about him. Never really had the chance to watch him.

The other thing that really irks me is that when we made the Gaborik trade everything I heard was that we would LOVE Dorrsett. Well I don't really really see what he brings to the table. Sure he has that in your face style, but in all honesty Prust is a much better player. I don't see very many redeeming qualities out if Dorrsett.

He looks like a 4th liner to me. He looked better as the Cap series moved along, but, he sucked against the Bruins.

It's been a small sample size. Not sure if he was really 100% either.

He had some very good playoff games, could have easily had a few goals. I think he'll look a lot better when he gets settled in.

it says MDZ++ meaning with other players/picks so u read that wrong. Eminger has played well for a 6th dman, u forgot stralman was injured so that had to force eminger into a top 4 which is not suited for him at all. I didn't say or think that a top 5 pick solves our scoring woes, but that is where you potentially get a stud offensive franchise forward.

No that roster isn't better then this year's roster relying on hrivik and lindberg in top 9 situations is a big question mark. Having JT Miller on the 4th line is just dumb. I am sorry you can't have a 3rd line of Asham-Boyle-Dorsett, thats barely just good enough for the 4th line. I am pretty sure many would agree but every one has their own opinion and you are entitled to your own.

Regardless if MDZ wasn't traded the Rangers will be looking for dmen either way, they don't know what they will get from staal now. Only thing I agree with you is that our system hinders our scoring ability.
