Predict Sochi

Gold - Russia
Silver - Canada
Bronze - Sweden over US

I'm Canadian and will obviously be rooting for my country, but I see an emotional victory by the home country, much like Vancouver.

Gold - US
Silver - Sweden
Bronze - Canada over Russia

Lack of goaltending hurts Canada, while strong goalies propel the US to gold.

This....I think Jonathan Quick is the best goalie in the world right now...

A hot goaltender could certainly be the difference in a short tournament.

Another USA-CAN final would be epic, with USA taking the gold this time.

And Russia beats Finland for the bronze medal.

I can bet a substantial sum of money on the fact that all four favorites (Canada, Russia, Sweden and USA) are not in medal games. It very likely that two of those teams meet already in quarter finals or one of them is eliminated in QF anyway.

I bet that in the medal games we see 2-3 of those "top" teams and then 1-2 teams of Finland, Czech Rep, Slovakia and Switzerland.

Yeah, on paper and in NHL 13 it can happen that all four top teams are in top four of the tournament, but it's not likely in real life.

Looking at the pools for Sochi-

Group A Group B Group C
Russia Finland Czech Republic
Slovakia Norway Sweden
United States Canada Switzerland
Slovenia Austria Latvia

Anything can happen, I think Canada, being in the less difficult pool, will make it easier for them to advance to the Semis, since i think they can win that Group, and get a favourable QF Matchup which they can win. However, the downside is that not being tested can hurt you later on. Anyways, i love everything about Canada, but still concerned about Goaltending, even if Luongo

has been tested on the international stage, with Gold Medals in the 2003/04 WC's, and the 2010 Olympics like i stated previously. However, Canada struggles on the Big Ice, and that trend will unfortunately continue. Canada loses to the US in the Semis, and beats Sweden in the Bronze Medal Game. It kills me to say this, but i have to put my Bias aside. The US with Jonathan Quick wins Gold and beats Russia in the Gold Medal Game.

Gold- USA
Silver- Russia
Bronze- Canada

I think Sweden, USA and Canada will win the medals. I'm thinking Sweden with the gold.

I don't think Russia has the depth on defense and in goal to compete with USA, Canada and Sweden.

Gold : I would say Russia if they get their motivation engine on.

Silver : Very hard pick. Canada could be but idk. Sweden maybe but there is also Finland, US and Czech. I'll say Sweden

Bronze: US seems to play better in international ice than canada.

4th : Finland, forever 4th.

Yeah. When ever have had a best-on-best tournament with all the most stacked teams putting up the best performances? The answer: technically never. At least one outside the top-four on paper has made it to the medal games every time.

Yet every time people fall for the same trap with their safe, run-of-the-mill predictions that just won't come to be. "But hey, maybe this is the time..."

For reminder...

1996 World Cup: USA, Canada, Russia/Sweden

1998 Olympics: Czech Republic, Russia, Finland, Canada

2002 Olympics: Canada, USA, Russia, Belarus

2004 World Cup: Canada, Finland, USA/Czech Republic

2006 Olympics: Sweden, Finland, Czech Republic, Russia

2010 Olympics: Canada, USA, Finland, Slovakia

The first best-on-best during the modern hockey, 1996 WCup pretty much played it straight, but ever since then? Quite some people have always ended up with eggs on their faces.

Ryan Miller was the #1 goalie headed into the last olympics

You could argue that quick is better, but I also argue that the Canadian forward and defense group will be better too.

IMO this tournament will take shape based on whether the Canadians get any goaltending or not. That is the big question.

Assuming the NHL is going to be involved as it stands now I think the US and Sweden on paper have the the least amount of questions. The previous 4 tournaments have shown though that looking strong(er)(est) on paper isn't a guarantee or even prerequisite to playing for a medal.

I actually like Swedens chances in Sochi, they should conted for gold but there are many teams with good chances. I cant wait for the tournament, the olympics in hockey are my favorite sporting even by a huge stretch
