Carolina Hurricanes used 2009 draft to bolster NHL lineup

In the summer of 2009, the Carolina Hurricanes were coming off a surprising run to the Eastern Conference finals, meaning the team would choose near the bottom of the draft.

Carolina wound up selecting three forwards and three defenseman with their six picks, but more than half of them would later be traded.

Philippe Paradis, LW, Shawinigan Cataractes (QMJHL) – 1st round, 27th overall
Status: Bust
NHL Games Played: 0

The Hurricanes went off the board in selecting Paradis, a potential power forward known for his booming shot. It was also a surprising choice because the Hurricanes had a reputation of not selecting QMJHL players.… read more

4 busts and 2 prospects, only one of which is our property anymore. Sounds about right. Though I have to imagine, for most teams, those legitimate prospects came from their 1st and 2nd round pick.

Did they change the definition of "bolster" again? I can never keep up.

Well, to be fair, the first two picks did kind of turn into Jordan and Tlusty.

Yeah, it's got to be the trades. Used Paradis, Dumo, and Kennedy to get Tlusty, Staal and Carter.

Hey now. He has two assists on the season thus far playing for the Crunch. That's a blistering 0.083 PPG. He's also perfected his "homeless" look for when he gets released.

Combine him with Jared Staal and you get the most talented Jesus in the family.

Have to love that Matt Kennedy pick. Draft a player who is already 20, then trade him 8 games into his first pro season because you don't want to pay the rest of his signing bonuses.

From the same line of logic that brought you the pick of Brendan Woods, 26 year old mucker from Wisco.

I honestly think anyone of us could've done a better job drafting that year than they did.

I feel like a lot of us were between Ferraro and Ashton. I can't remember on which side of the line I was. I don't remember liking Ashton a whole lot.

I think by "Carolina Hurricanes" they meant "Colorado Avalanche"

Damn, looking at the results of this draft on Wikipedia... It's a lot stronger than I thought it was.

I think a bunch of us were high on Klingberg as well. Quite a few disappointments. Lots of guys who looked like first round prospects, slid to the second and then became nothing much.

I remember reading the draft thread from 2009, getting pumped up for (Ferraro?), and hearing Francis go up on and announce the Paradis pick and being like..."Who the **** did he just say?"

Yep, I remember being VERY excited about Ferraro (wrong on that one... so far), O'Reilly, and Chiasson. Paradis will likely go down as one of the worst first round picks by this franchise of all time and we're lucky we salvaged ANYTHING out of that bust. Thank god for Burke's idiocy.

But, but, but, Don Cherry hates him. I thought that meant you were successful?

I know this is the most recent complete bust pick, but I'd contend Knyazev, Tselios, and to a lesser extent Hereema were worse because they were considerably higher picks.

I was thinking about those the other day too, and for some reason I thought Tselios and Knyazev were the same person. Nope, two wonderfully different busts who played a total of 2 NHL games in their careers.
