Final countdown in Canes-Pack scheduling conflict

Sounds like the Debbie Yow administration is not as easy going as good ol' boy Fowler.

Quote:
Rutherford says NCSU is holding 129 out of 214 days, including 26 of 30 days in November, for only 23 football and basketball games. This does not leave enough time for hockey games, let alone other events.

For its part, NCSU says it has long acted in good faith, and even rescheduled events to accommodate the Hurricanes. For example, it moved the start time for the Spring Football Game on April 20 from the preferred start time of 3:30 p.m. up to 1:30 p.m. because of the scheduled hockey game that night. NCSU also canceled a planned autograph session.

“Again, NC State has offered these concessions, despite its status as a primary and preferred user of PNC Arena, in the spirit of good faith and cooperation,” Chancellor Randy Woodson wrote in one of the letters.

"The primary and preferred user of PNC"

LOL

Going to both Hurricanes games and NCSU basketball games, I can tell you that they draw roughly the same amount of people.

Anyways, can someone explain why NCSU is holding 129 dates for only 23 home dates? Is the NCAA tournament in Raleigh this year have anything to do with it?

So with the fair in October there is only a possibility of what 6 home games in the first two months of the season?

The football schedule is already set, so they are essentially holding out 124 days for 18 basketball games.

Wait, they had to move a Spring football game?

Oh the humanity.

I think from now on... when anyone asks me why I absolutely detest Cow College, I'll just refer them to this line. A short and sweet example.

Are they seriously arguing that they somehow deserve 26 reserved dates for what will likely be less than 10 events?

Last year, NC State had 3 home basketball games in the month of November.

In 2011, they had 5.

In 2010, they, again, had 3 home basketball games.

This is insane. Forget the 'Canes; how in the hell is PNC allowing them to do this? They're giving up 20 dates of hockey and concerts/monster trucks/whatever.

The only reasoning I can think of is that NCSU isn't getting invited to their customary tournament in the middle of November that all those years I posted share. I have to go back to 2008 to find a November where they didn't attend an invitational, and they played 2 games in PNC that year.

I've ALWAYS said they should stay in Reynolds and only play in PNC Arena for when teams like us or Duke are the opponent. It's so ridiculous. Every time I can see the upper level on TV during their games, it's always a ghost town.

and especially THIS

Seriously no reason for NC State to be pulling this ****. If there's ever been any reason to justify the Hurricanes getting their own stadium in downtown Raleigh, Yow pulling this ******** is it.

Well, since you "detest" State I will ignore your ignorance on the subject. BTW can you explain why UNC fans think "Cow College" is a put down? It's not, it's just juvenile. For the record most students at State major in something other than an agricultural related field. But they all go to real classes and take real tests and earn real degrees. Too bad the cheaters at UNC can't say that.

I have had season basketball tickets since the arena opened. I sit in the mezzanine in the third level and it is never a "ghost town". Some games are better attended than others. Most ACC games draw quite well.

This reserved dates stuff is all nonsense. As soon as the basketball schedule is released all the free dates will be given back to the arena. I would be surprised if State could really block the Canes from scheduling games either.

The problem is that the 'Canes have to get their schedule in by June 1st, or before State decides how to use its allotted dates. Usually (as the article indicates), State was willing to work with the 'Canes so that both parties can get the best schedule.

Now? State has decided that it should dictate what the 'Canes schedule should look like. A pointless display of power that will destroy any goodwill between to entities that compete for consumer dollars and share a building.

I hate this, because the Hurricanes are going to get a BS schedule so State can decide which 3 games out of 26 possible dates it would like to host. Utterly pointless.

Blown Away, gocaness88 is actually correct on this one. As an NCSU student who went to about 10 games this season, I can attest to the fact that pretty much the only people who sit in the upper bowl for basketball games are students (who are given free tickets) that didn't show up early enough to sit courtside or in the student sections behind either of the backboards. They only fill these seats when we play a highly ranked team or a rival such as UNC, Duke, Syracuse when they were #1 two seasons ago, etc...

I sure hope this can all get settled politely, I'd hate to have to see a public squabble between two of my favorite teams.

It says "a preferred user" not "the preferred user". I'd have to think some local officials would get involved with the final deal. I'm sure that area businesses would riot if a lot of events had to go elsewhere because of this.

As for concessions, I'd hardly call moving the spring football game up 2 hours a big thing.

For the record, we are not going to have a college-related flame war in a hockey-related thread. Both sides have got a shot in, and we're going to leave it at that. Anything else needs to go to the OT sticky thread.

Surely I'm not the only one who doesn't really want a downtown arena for the Hurricanes right? I won't knock it if it happens, and I get that it will improve downtown Raleigh and businesses and nightlife and so on.

But come on, the tailgating, we'll lose it.
