Steal of this years free agent crop

Evey year there are 1 or 2 guys that when they get signed nobody really cares but then they go on to not only meet but far exceed expectations.

Two examples of this are Macarthur when we gave him 1.1 million and he scored 62 points and Jay McClement who almost by himself brought our PK from 30th to 2nd or 3rd.

So who is it this year? who will be the steal of this year free agent crop?

my money is on Viktor Stalberg.

Edit: Thought you were referring to the 2012 UFA crop. Never mind.

Brad Richards

Dominic Moore if he comes back, would probably be on a bargain contract and he is just about the perfect 3rd line centre.

I'd love Stalberg.

Grabner - Strome - Stalberg

Would there a faster line in the league?

Hope Dom Moore can come back and play as well as he did before. No one could blame if he couldn't, though.

Richards does not give discounts.

People don't overpay for crappers either. He'll take what he's offered. A lot of the teams interested last season aren't buyers this summer with the cap going down or people stepping up from within since last season.

Mark Streit if he makes it to UFA

he doesn't get a lot of hype and he's getting up there in age but he's pretty good

Derek Roy doesn't seem to be getting any press but I think if he goes to a team like TOR he'll be a steal. Also Penner if he isn't resigned, I bet somebody will be happy with him. Maybe Wolski too.

I think this belongs in the opposite thread. Someone is going to give Streit the long term deal he has been asking for and they are going to be dissapointed.

He still is looking at somewhere between 3 to 5 million more than likely.

No but if Cogs could somehow make his way to that team and specifically on that line then their shifts would just be a complete blur.

Anyways if Ryder doesn't re-sign I think he'd be a steal. 3.5m for a 20-30 goal scorer isn't a bad investment.

Good thread.

Penner is one who could pay off big for a team in the playoffs if they're good enough to get there with limited regular season contributions hehe.

Street will still get paid just shorter term I think.

Boyd Gordon is a good one too if a team missing a third line C but having the top two set.

As a Jets fan Antropov would be a good pickup if a team has the depth to play him with some more experienced guys with speed on a 3rd line.

I suspect the steal is Bickel, Bozak or Brunner. Each of those guys might bring a new team a large bonus over expectations.

If I needed a top line, like Vancouver, I'd grab Bozak and offer sheet Kadri. Too bad Gillis precluded this by overpaying (Connaughton and the second round pick in this year's draft) for Roy.

$3 million? Still scored at a ~60 point pace. Two years, $5-7 million; overpayment, but that's how free agency works. He would be the best UFA forward, if not player. When Tyler Bozak is asking for $5 million (and I like Bozak) - and will likely get it - I don't know how you think Brad Richards will only get 3.

But I don't think NYR will buy him out. They'll give him one more year. No owner wants to just give up $24M for no reason.

If he is brought in to be a #3/4, PP specialist and if he plays easy ES minutes he will do great. If he's asked to play as a top pairing dman on a team and play top lines I can see him not succeeding. In the past playoffs Streit played the 5th most ES minutes for the Isles so his role is already being reduced there.

I think if a team has a dman who can "babysit" Streit & let Streit play his game then Streit would be a valuable piece. So with that in mind I think the Avs, Stars, Isles & Sabres interested in him, maybe the Hawks as well. I think he'll get 3 years for 15 from a team that is desperate for an offensive dman.

As for my pick for a steal in this years FA crop I think that player will be Morrow, Raymond or Wellwood. I think Morrow will find new legs with whatever team he signs with, if he stays with the Pens playing with Malkin/Crosby will surely help his point totals. Raymond I think will sign with a team that gives him a chance to win a cup (not saying that the Nucks are done as contenders, it's just time for a change of scenery) & when injuries hit he steps his play up & solidifies himself as a top 6 winger. Then with Wellwood he will sign a deal around 1.00M-1.5M per year and he'll score at a .5 P/G clip.

I guess we'll have to wait and see, but right now, Richards would still be the #1 UFA on the market (if he's bought out), and lots of teams could use a #1 or #2 centerman.

I don't know who these interested teams from last year who wouldn't be in the race this season were, but I could see all of Dallas, Florida, New Jersey, Nashville, Phoenix, Toronto, Montreal, and Calgary being willing to open their wallets for him. I don't think he'll sign with a Canadian team, but that still leaves 5 serious contenders (4 if you assume Phoenix won't be able to compete financially).

Bickell and Gordon are going to do what's expected of them and be very good third liners.

I think Valtteri Filppula is going to make some team very happy if he doesn't re-up in Detroit.
