If you had to choose one who would it be?

Carter.

I'd take Richards before I took Pitkanen, I'll day a big Canadian boy over a foreigner anyday.

I'm glad we have both because it would be a hell of a decision

since I think that it is harder to find a future franchise defencemen, my selection would be...

1) Pitkanen
2) Carter
3) Richards

It might be a bit early to call Pitkanen a franchise defenseman.

Pitkanen would no doubt be number one, because we have no other legit options for a future #1 defenseman. A true #1 defenseman is also the toughest position to find. Center is the position we have the most depth.

I would take Pitkanen if only because really good defensemen are that much harder to come by. Defense is what wins games even if what they do is not noticed when they do it well. Their overall ability as players is pretty equal in my eyes though; both are good at both ends, have similar size, make good decisions with the puck, Pitkanen has somewhat better skating, Carter has better hands.

1. Pitkanen

Really not that hard of a choice either. He's huge, fast, physical, and has great offensive and defensive instincts.

2. Carter/Richards

So tough to choose but Carter has impressed me so much in the playoffs I have to give him the edge.

I'm going with FG69's (switch Richards & Carter), but GOY's last statement is why I replied to this post.

Nice problem to have, isn't it?

Classic, classic backtalking.
Pitkanen has made the strides franchise defenseman are
expected to make this season.
But Richards over Carter?
Could we say that's like taking Ricci over Primeau?

No we couldn't. Richards and Carter ooze offensive potential where Primeau and Ricci were better off defensively. I'd take Richards ahead of Carter for the sole reason that when he's on the penalty kill it's almost like the opposing team goes on the defence because he's so good short handed. As a side note he's a spark plug player that jumps everyone on your bench and will always wear the "C" no matter who he plays for. Pitkanen-Richards-Carter in order of selection.

Yeah, well, you just described the career of Mike Ricci. Primeau and Ricci
don't ooze offensive potential? I guess.....It's always fun debating a moot
point though. I love both players (Richards and Carter) but can I throw
this out: Richards is a stereotype (spark plug kind of player); Carter is a
prototype (drives the net kind of player) I know we're giddy about Richards
performing well in the AHL playoffs but....

Carter > Richards > Pitkanen

Our top centers are older than our top defencemen. The top centers (Roenick and Primeau) are going to retire sooner than the top defencemen (Markov and Johnsson)

very good point Harper, i'd go

1. Pitkanen
2. Carter
3. Richards
b/c it is harder to find a number 1 defensemen then center plus we already have several good centers young and old.
