Question about Michalek

If for some reason he does not work out for us next season. would you like to see him traded before he becomes ufa next offseason or would you like to try to re-sign him and give him another chance?

It all depends what spot were in at the deadline. Just like any UFA.

I don't think we'll be in a position where we'll be sellers at the trade deadline. I realistically see Michalek walking next season if he continues to have injury troubles.

No I don't want to see him traded. We have a chance to make a dent in the playoffs and trading him would not help. Also, we don't have our first round pick, so we definitely won't be selling at the deadline.

And I don't see a scenario where we don't want him, yet he still has trade value. If we don't want him it means his knees are seriously ****ed.

I say we re-sign him if he wants to stay and isn't demanding the moon. He scored 35 goals a year ago, that's a lot of goals.

Ya, his injury troubles are my main worry about him next season.

Re-sign him. The cap (and cap floor) is going up next year (2014-15). Big time. Try to do ~5x5 with a limited NTC. If he continues to have problems, trade him in a few years.

Trade him for a first round pick in 2014 at the deadline. We could use the pick and there are many good free agents available next year.

We definitely do not trade him. The main issue is whether to try to resign, and I think that depends on how his knee responds to that new treatment in Europe. If it works as well for him as it did for some NBA players he could regain his 25-30 goals per season form.

I should have mentioned in my original post that i do like michalek and i would want him to re-sign with us unless he still has major knee issues. The thought of michalek-spezza-ryan just makes me droll too be honest. If michalek and spezza is 100% healthy, expect this first line to be extremely deadly.

Everything I've read about the 2014 draft is its brutal compared to this year.

Also every year at the beginning of the year we say this UFA class is going to be unreal then we get to the end of the year and your #1 player is ....David Clarkson. Teams will sign their players, it wont look as good as it does now.

Why does everyone assume the cap is going up next year? It is already artificially inflated compared to the 2011-2012 once you account for the 57-50% drop. Are they predicting revenues to exceed pre-lockout levels? I find that hard to believe based a shortened season where ticket prices were lowered, or given away free, around the league.

I'd be more inclined to predict a 2-3M increase next year rather than a large increase.

I give him the benefit of the doubt, I think theres a reason hes going all the way to germany to get treatment, and no just some top end place in north america, i believe his problem will be solved. and hopefully spezza, can stay healthy, then we got

Michalek - Spezza - Ryan,

also OT, but the health of Spezza and 9mm, is going to be a HUGE factor if Ryan resigns with us or not, he wont stay here if he doesnt have line mates, as seen in anaheim,..

Next year we will see the real Michalek come out.

FINALLYYYYYYYYYY Michalek is not the number 1 winger. This is where he EXCELLS!

If Michalek is still continuing to have troubles I would trade him at the deadline for another asset, regardless of us in playoff position or not.

I might be the only one that thinks Michalek is not a top 3 forward. I think he disappears when he is needed most and i'd trade him even today if the right deal came along. Plus he has serious knee issues and I wouldn't be surprised if he only plays 60 or less games this season.

Lmfao, of course he isn't a top 3 forward and anyone who thinks so is stupid. He is though a solid complementary first liner(to 2 elite first liners) and a solid top 6er.

I too would trade him but he holds more value to us than he would in a trade. We have yet to see Michalek preform behind someone who is better than him. Michalek has always been the number 1 winger and has struggled at times to cope with the pressure of it.

if it makes you feel better, there is a school of thought that thinks that the canadian dollar will crash, bringing those numbers down.

(of course, that screws the sens more than any other team, but hey!)

If he puts up another 20-30 goal season and can stay relatively heathly we resign him. I'd say a 2 to 3 year extension in the 5M range. After that I like to think at least a prospect or two will be able to replace his production. We have holes short term in our top 6 and losing him just makes them bigger.

If Michalek is still having troubles next year, trade him for what? His value isn't going to be very high.

I'd like to see Michalek line up with Turris and MacArthur, Ryan with Spezza and Zibanajed. Michalek, when healthy, is very tough to knock off the puck and adds an element of toughness to that line. That leaves Spezza with two trigger men. Follow up the top six with a Greening-Pageau-Condra line that plays around 60% possession and can take tough d-zone starts, and then a "pest" line Conacher-Smith-Neil.
