It would have to be 8th to take Nurse, even then I would take Zadorov over Nurse.

Top 7:
MacKinnon
Barkov
Drouin
Nichushkin
Jones
Monahan
Lindholm

So taking Nurse at 7 would still be a reach.

Honestly, if we did a deal like #5 for #11 and Coburn, I wouldn't be opposed to taking Domi at #11. But it wouldn't shock me to see him go top 10.

Sounds like he's just trying to drum up interest to build up bidding on the #5 pick.

At 11, Ok. But at 5. No way.

True, but I might not break things.

Further to the Carolina tweet. There are financial restrictions the Hurricanes face. Need a top 4 D, but can't pay Letang-like dollars.
And the responses to that tweet?

Phaneuf! Markov! Bouwmeester! People are dumb.

Look at the players JR goes after. Staal, Ward, Sutter, Skinner etc. IMO, Monahan may not have the ceiling of some of the other picks, but those other qualities and the thought that he can play next season are what makes him a "Canes Pick" to me. Doesn't mean he's the only player that fits that bill.

That's not saying that JR always goes in that direction, as he has acquired players that don't fit that mold, but it is a trend for him.
we had been talking about jr's trends prior to that post but yeah, monahan may turn out to be an excellent nhl player. he probably wouldn't be my first pick but i'm sure there's going to be some surprises and some flops.

Sounds like Gormley and 12th for 5th is still the money deal. Make this happen and JR could take Hartman at 12 if he wants (who scarily, fits the tweets of a non-"skilled" but still 1st rounder).

Hartman at #12 is a massive reach. It's possible that he might be there at #37.

If we drop that low, it will either be someone like Domi or possibly another defenseman, IMO.

At 12, Zadorov should be there.

He might, but I have him as the second defenseman off the board (BUF #8).

I thought most had Nurse there, which is what I figure.

I'd be happy with Zadorov, Risto, Nurse, or Shinkaruk at 12. At least one is likely to be there.

a consolation may be that there are many people involved in making the decisions unless jr is really dictatorial. as this draft is being seen as the best for a long while, i have to think that the group is really going to try to capitalize. given the season they had and how the last few years turned out, they have to know there is no room for a huge blunder. if jr royaly screws this up his job should finally be in question. great draftees, buyouts, free agents, guys to unload, other teams looking to improve with this draft, etc.. there really aren't any excuses.

I'm pretty sure there is a team that includes JR, Francis, Jason Karmanos, Muller, MacDonald as well as other scouts that are in on the decision.

That may be the scary part though. The real impact of this Draft won't be felt for at least 3-5 years. If the Canes miss the Playoffs another year JRs job is already on the line, they need to win and win now.

Would JR sacrifice the long-term impact of this draft for an immediate solution to save the Canes season and his job?

nurse shouldn't even be a blip on the ******* radar. just no! and imo though seeing jones on highlight reels only and at the combine (where he looked bad), he won't be nhl ready for at least a year, maybe two. way over-hyped. he would be made to look silly out there if he wasn't destroyed first.

At #5? Yeah, but if we move down to say #10, #11 or #12 and Nurse is still there, I'd take him.

I'm just ready for June 30th. The anxiety about JR screwing it up is almost too much with every new statement released, just either surprise me or get the disappointment over with.

Are we going to end up hitting part 3 before the draft? Just over 200 posts to go!

Agreed. Feel like this is one of those drafts where it'd be hard to screw the pooch, yet JR seems like he might be into pooches.

The weird thing about picks 5-12 (or thereabouts) is that it doesn't feel like it's a difference of getting a better player, as much as getting the one you want.

Lindholm vs. Monahan vs. Nichushkin
and
Risto vs. Nurse vs. Zadorav.

They're all pretty equal.
