Barkov shouldn't be grouped with the top three.
McKenzie says some scouts he's talked to have Barkov ahead of either MacKinnon or Drouin, so he definitely should be considered with the Top 3.

I'd prefer Jones and #33 to just Jones.
I would think the only way Tampa moves up is to grab Jones or MacKinnon. It would be illogical to trade up to grab Drouin.

99% chance they keep the pick. In any given year the team holding the top selection will consider dealing it but Jones makes way, way too much sense for the Avs to deal the pick.

Ideally, the Avs would swap 1st overall++ for 3rd overall + Hedman. It's been mentioned before but I still have yet to see any Lightning fans gauge value to even it out.

But even the proposal mentioned in your post I'd probably accept. Coming away with (what would likely be) Drouin and the 31st & 33rd picks would be exceptional, considering the players that could still be on the board at that time.

Maybe if it was 12 to 10.
The difference between the player you get at 1 and at 3 isn't big enough to justify paying more than that in my opinion.

Edit: Colorado gets at least one of the big 3 and they basically add another 1st round pick with the 33rd pick. Not sure how you can say no to that if you value the big 3 pretty much equally.

Except it is depending on each team.

A team like TBay wanting another center or dman could be enticing, if theyve truly targetted a specific player. Its not always that you can move to the top pick.

On the other hand, the avs cant move the pick for something as uncertain as an early 2nd rounder.

The incentive for Tampa Bay to move up and take Jones is have a future partner for Hedman and solidify their top pairing for the foreseeable future. Dealing your best player at your weakest position would be counterintuitive.

Interesting.
Dater usually talks out of his ass, but it's the first I've seen a legit hockey source mention trading for two of the top three. Can you imagine the Avs coming away with Jones + MacKinnon or MacKinnon + Drouin? Denver would explode.

I think Jones' stock has dropped and teams are getting cold feet about drafting him 1st overall. I don't think the Avs have changed their mind about Jones, I do however feel they believe no one else has him at #1.

I would wager they'd trade down with Tampa as Florida is a territorial competitor and nab MacKinnon with the pick while Florida grabs Drouin. But Colorado can't screw this up, they must retain a high draft position and pick a good prospect.

I believe the draft will play out like this:

1. MacKinnon
2. Drouin
3. Jones

I can even picture Jones falling to 4th

They also wouldnt have enough players to ice.

Trading for another pick would absolutely dismantle the teams depth.

Not among scouts. If anything any perceived drop is largely media driven.

That's close. I don't know if you could sell it to the fans though. If you make that trade and jones does actually become the next lidstrom, it could cost you your job.

Yeah he may rank well but defensemen are risky picks. MacKinnon isn't. He also fell from 1st to 2nd.

Can't argue. The amount the Avs would have to pay would probably be counterintuitive in itself.

It would not feel right if Oilers would not be picking #1 overall. So... our 7th and something. Here Avs, come and get some! You have to provide your own lube, we are that cheap!

Right but if you make that trade and then player you draft becomes the next Stamkos or whomever AND get another solid player at #33, you're a saint
