This is what I don't get.
I fully agree with ^.
Then, when I suggest a moderate to high risk, high to very high reward overture to move McD for McKinnon, (while also converting MDZ, 20 something overall, into Duncan Siemens, like 8th overall), I get no support.

If we trade enough vets and premium guys we will be ahead of the cap, we can rent somebody if we have to while Skjei emerges in 2 years. In the meantime we get McKinnon now.

How else do you propose getting real offense?
There was a time when Girardi + Staal + would have got us Yak +, that boat has sailed.

And the lesson is: Even if it hurts, we need to move certain desired pieces to get ahead of the curve, or we won't get partners motivated to move such pieces.

Am I, like, talking Swahili or something?
Lundsanity30 is right, we need more real offense. I made a comprehensive plan. What alternatives to you guys propose that, as he said, gets us real offense now?

Richards Del Zotto Boyle and Zuccarello to Bolts for Ryan Malone, Connolly and 3rd overall.

Malone would be a salary dump for them but would be a good fit. Rangers need more size in the top 6. Physical solid player.

Where do you guys come up with these numbers? 12 mil per year? You should balk from that kind of contract.

Crosby and Malkin both have 8.7 mil cap hits this year. Crosby just signed a new contract that starts next year, with a cap hit of....8.7 mil. Do you honestly think anyone is going to give Malkin 12 mil per year?

Not gonna happen. He'll get about what he's making now, barring a major injury.

Derek Stepan (damn great 2nd liner, but can he repeat this years performance and be a 1C?)
Derick Brassard (lots of potential, but no certainty about bringing it every night)
Rick Nash (a.k.a. Playoffs are "good"; still is the least problem when it comes to production)
Chris Kreider (yeah he wasn't used properly but he scored 3 goals all season)
Ryan Callahan (for him to be at his best, means one of our top 2 lines has to be a grinding, defense first line)
Carl Hagelin (speedy as ****, but lacks creativity and doesn't have a good shot)
and the Hobbit (very creative guy, but I feel it's 2nd line or bust for him; hopeful he can blossom without Torts, though)

as candidates for our top 2 lines. Compare those guys with BOS, LAK, CHI or PIT. Perhaps I'm being a bit overly dramatic, but that's not SC material. Sather might see no other way of handling his business than giving Clowe a good chunk of money and hope for the best. Not that he or Horton or Ryder or any of the guys formerly mentioned would make us SC material.

The positive here certainly is, that this a very young core that will grow in the next few years. Hopefully Lundqvist can keep it up.
I agree. I trade to say this earlier, but people jumped me stating that Step and Brass are vets. It's not about that, there will be a ton of pressure on this team next season. We need a PP. The personel we have now will not fix the PP.

It is risky for Step, Brass and co not to get a little help. And whoever we get must be a good PP player. Just stop talking about scoring wingers with size etc. If you have a bottom three PP you fix it first.

Right. Corey Perry just signed a contract with a cap hit of 8.625 and he resigned - didn't go into free agency. But Malkin, the three time 100+ point forward will get about 8.7. Crosby got 8.7 for 13 years and his first few he's getting paid 10-12.

Players like Malkin don't make it into free agency. If he does 30 teams will be in the running for his services.

Crosby is getting paid 12 million for the next 3 years, then 10.9 million for the three after that. He also took a discount for Pitt.

EDM want to contend. For them it's unthinkable to "just" have Justin Schultz. We haven't had an offensive D as good as Justin Schultz since Leetch was traded NINE YEARS ago.

Let's get Bobby Ryan lol.

Agree on Horton, and in general.
Malkin is an exception to the rule. He is not only uber-elite, he is possibly the best player in the world.

You give him the checkbook and tell him this is the max $$ the league allows us to pay you, for max term. Then you adjust further w/other players for cap space.

Unless, of course, we go with my comprehensive plan which already replaces most bigger raise candidates w/multiple high prospects who are ELCs.

Then we already have cap!

No team is going to blow that much of their cap on 1 player.

Ovi has the highest cap hit at a little over 9.5 mil. That's a huge jump up to 12 mil.

He signed his contract when the cap was 50.3 million. He also had many RFA years in there.

Even if the cap is 64.3 when Malkin becomes a FA (it'll be higher), 9.5 adjusted for the cap rising is over 12. Also, I said 80-85, which is between 11.5 and 12.

If Malkin leaves Pittsburgh, it'll be for money and that's it.

This will probably be our opening night lineup, should we retain everyone and Cally/Hags still can't play:

Zuccarello-Stepan-Nash
Kreider-Brassard-Thomas
Pyatt-Miller/Boyle-Dorsett
Powe-Miller/Boyle-Asham

McDonagh-Girardi
Staal-Del Zotto
Moore-Stralman
Eminger

Lundqvist
Biron

That's a rough group of forwards.

Not this summer.. 0% chance. Wings need scoring, he's the only one who can score 30.

Could easily see Fast and Lindberg making it. Wouldn't count out Hrivik, either, he would have had a shot at getting a spot were he not injured.

I think the Rangers and Oilers make the most sense to make a trade; one team has defense, the other has offense.

Are there any inclinations from Oiler fans as to who they could see being traded?

I actually think Hrivik makes it next year if the team really stresses youth. Lindberg, Hrivik and Fast are the most ready outside of Kreider.

Paajarvi + #7 for DZ. Move up to #5. Could see Carolina moving down. Pick up Monahan or Nichuskin.

I definitely see him advancing, but on the side of caution, I'm expecting that later than sooner (maybe a cup of coffee, realistically year after next he competes?).

I am not overly afraid of high cap hits down the road, that cap has always gone up and it will keep going up. Take my word for it.

But, you can't risk a 17m cap hit. Buy Richards out. You have no options...

Works for me. I doubt Edmonton would do it. They still think Paajarvi has super high value.

I think Nichuskin will be there at #7

In essence, it becomes an arms race as to which team can compile the most Swedes.

If that trade does go through and Fasth and Lindberg earn a spot on the roster, do we edge Detroit?

Unfortunately, Schultz is not realistic now as he recently actively chose Oilers. However, after a year or so, he might be willing to stay or go, ie., more open minded either way.

No on Ryan, he'll cost too much, add to cap we have to control. Would rather gamble on McKinnon on ELC!

Please.
Just admit we don't yet have enough horses with the guys we got, and WE HAVE TO do something along the lines of what I'm proposing -- a couple of our top guys on salary for MORE top picks with more OVERALL upside on ELC.

That is the express way to improve as if we had drafted the best guys from the get go, if we had the opportunity (which we did not, usually).

Play that out, please.

we get 7 overall+ for MDZ+.
I'm not 100% sure we can get that from Edmonton unless the + is overpayment we don't want, but for sake of discussion, say it flies.

we also get 5 overall + for Staal/Staal+.
Same rationale.

You have 5 and 7 overall.

What do you propose?
How far do you advance?
Top 3? If not, not sure advance is worth it!

Ok, top 3: what combos do you see for 1, 2, or 3 overall.

I think TB considers that, but do we want Drouin? Yes, but we really want McKinnon or Jones.

I don't think 5 and 7 overall are enough.

I would LOVE to agree with you on this, But don't think so.

The organization won't move both Staal and Del Zotto. It's one or the other.
