Summer Papers from May 29th - July 11th

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets prospects get call. Always a good sign when you get the call from Team Canada.

Winnipeg Free Press: Past and present NHLers visit children’s rehab centre. Hull, Steen x 2 and Bogosian got together to bring some joy to some kids.

Winnipeg Sun: Hockey royalty remembers Winnipeg’s Don Baizley as king of agents. The hockey world descended on downtown Winnipeg yesterday to pay tribute to a legend who kept Winnipeg on the NHL map long after the Jets 1.0 departed our city.

Illegal Curve: Five members of the Winnipeg Jets file for salary arbitration. The Jets big 3 RFAs (Bogosian, Wheeler and Little) filed as did Tangradi and Postma. Despite the fact that this move wasn’t unexpected it caused some consternation amongst Jets nation. In total 21 NHL players filed for arbitration on Wednesday, with the Jets group comprising 23% of that total.

May 29th Papers

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Crafting a Draft. The run to the draft has the entire organization focused on the next generation of Jets prospects.

Winnipeg Free Press: If Noel’s the guy, Jets need to say so. Nobody wants a lame duck year from coach Noel. As Gary says you either extend him or set him free if you don’t feel he is the guy.

Illegal Curve: Latest Alexander Burmistrov news. Host of the TSN 1290 Rona Round Table Rick Ralph spoke with Slava Malamud, a journalist who works for the Russian sports daily Sport-Express, and also is a contributor for NHL.com and they briefly touched on Alexander Burmistrov and the KHL.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets in talks with Bogosian, Little. And so it begins. Interesting that they’ve started with two of the big three as opposed to the entire trio.

- Missed these articles from the weekend:

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets need more everything. More anything? More everything!! The Jets are still aways away from being a top contender.

Winnipeg Free Press: Hainsey unlikely to stay with Jets. Will his role in the PA force Hainsey to test the market more than he would otherwise?

Winnipeg Sun: Into the Wild West. For the third time in three years the Jets and their fans will be in for another completely different season as this time they head West.

Jets news:
Winnipeg Free Press: Bigger Byfuglien in no shape for a trade. Does size matter?

TSN: Off season game plan. If you missed it they had quite an in-depth look at the team on TSN and what the plan will be to get this team moving in the right direction.

NHL.com: 2013 mock Entry Draft. As we get closer to the June 30th draft day we are going to see more and more mock drafts with prognosticators taking their turn to predict the draft outcome. Of course with trades so many things can change but here are three looks at the top 30 and who these guys think the Jets may take.

Kimelman | Morreale | Hoffner.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Evander Kane tweets then deletes homophobic comment, apologizes. Looks like Thursday really was the Evander news day. Seems his twitter got him into a wee bit of trouble although by this AM he had deleted and apologized for the comment.

Winnipeg Free Press: Slater on the mend. Says he would have been good to go had the Jets made the playoffs. Gonna need a healthy Slater next season to get this team into the playoffs.

Winnipeg Jets: Evander Kane video exclusive. Evander Kane talks about his summer so far, his recent surgery and also spoke about the season ahead, his junior career and the playoffs.

Illegal Curve: Evander Kane has successful surgery. After a successful surgery yesterday he now has 4-6 weeks of recovery time.

Jets news:

Jets Official site: Lukas Sutter profile. A little insight into the Jets 2nd round selection in 2012.

Sportsnet: Off-season outlook for Winnipeg. Another assessment of where the Jets are and what needs to get done.

Winnipeg Free Press: Bogosian too important an asset to let slip away. No question the Jets need to get Bogosian signed to a long term deal. And while fans would like to see this done asap, it might still be awhile before it gets done.

Winnipeg Sun: True North opens its Shark Club gaming centre. If you are looking for a place to watch the game in style check out this new facility in the heart of downtown.

TSN: Evander Kane interview on Mike Richards in the Morning (audio). The Jets forward spoke with Toronto radio yesterday. According to the review they covered "It was a tough year for the Winnipeg Jets not only narrowly missing out on the playoffs but also a South East division title. Playing in a hockey hotbed such as Winnipeg has its pros & cons, but the atmosphere at the arena is completely different from Atlanta. It should be interesting to see how the Jets stack up in the Midwest division next year."

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Centre of attention. The Jets have a lot of needs to get this team into contention but perhaps none more pressing than adding a top line centre. The big question this season will be if Mark Scheifele is able to make the jump to the Jets or will he still require some seasoning in the AHL with the IceCaps.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Chevy’s focus is inking RFAs. We keep hearing about little chit chats between the Jets and the agents but fans are anxious to hear that the big 3 have had their services secured.

Winnipeg Free Press: Look to the left. Ed Tait continues to look at the Jets roster and where they could use some improvement.

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets extend Noel’s contract. The lame duck title has now been removed as one of the first things Chevy did in his presser was to announce that coach Noel had his contract extended another year. This will likely make the majority of IC readers happy as in our recent IC poll, most of you wanted to either extend him or maintain the status quo.

Winnipeg Sun: GM not in market to trade Byfuglien. There were rumours about Buffs weight recently which in turn fueled speculation about his trade potential. Chevy says he isn’t in the market to trade the big defenceman but who knows what is happening behind the scenes.

Winnipeg Sun: GM willing to listen to draft-day deals but only if it's worth his while. As is the attitude of the other 29 GMs from across the league I'm sure.

Illegal Curve: GM Kevin Cheveldayoff pre-draft press conference. If you missed the presser we have all the audio on site. For those unable to listen while at work, there are some of the more interesting comments that we tweeted during the presser.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Where’s the beef? So far the common theme has been the shallowness of the depth in the organization and perhaps nowhere is this most glaring than at right wing. After Blake Wheeler there is a significant drop off and I’m sure coach Noel and company would like to see a strong winger to compliment the 2nd line.

- As we approach the NHL Entry Draft on Sunday, check out the Jets 1st round selection from 2012 Jacob Trouba as you get some insight into what his day was like in Pittsburgh last year. (video)

Jets Draft Coverage:

It was a crazy day in Newark yesterday. We have a ton of Jets content on site. Not all of the new Jets were in the Prudential Center but we got audio from the following players and video from Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff.

Round 1: Josh Morrissey
Round 2: Nic Petan
Round 3: Eric Comrie, James Lodge
Round 4: Andrew Copp, Jan Kostalek

End of Draft: Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Drafting done, now time for development. The Jets made a lot of moves to re-stock the cupboard and it will likely be a few years before we see all of the results of this work. Will fans be patient enough to wait?
Draft day

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets pick up Frolik, Lodge and Lipon in third round. There was a considerable buzz in the air when the trade was announced inside the Prudential Center. Many Jets fans feel this finally gives Evander Kane a proper right winger to play with. Considering the price it wasn’t a difficult choice for GM Cheveldayoff to make.

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets raise eyebrows with Morrissey pick. The reaction on the twitterverse was immediate and pretty clear as fans were not happy with the selection. Not because of the player, but because they felt (which they do) that the Jets needed additional fire power up front. However GM Cheveldayoff obviously has a plan in mind for his team, especially considering he is a left shooting defenceman.

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets fans gather for draft day. Sounds like it was quite the party at the Shark Club as our own Drew Mindell was broadcasting from the bar. Both Mark Stuart and James Wright joined the festivities.

Winnipeg Sun: Burmistrov bolting Jets for KHL? Is this still much ado about nothing? Who knows. We will likely find out relatively soon.

Jets Draft Coverage:

For those who took yesterday off to enjoy Canada Day, here are links to all our Jets draft coverage.

Round 1: Josh Morrissey
Round 2: Nic Petan
Round 3: Eric Comrie, James Lodge
Round 4: Andrew Copp, Jan Kostalek

End of Draft: Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Frolik could click with Kane. Jets fans have been waiting some time to have some players that could match and compliment Evander Kane and we shall see if Frolik fits the bill.

Winnipeg Free Press: He’s Mensa material. For the Jets fans who are still unsure about the reasons for taking this young man, here are some of the reasons that Winnipeg went with the Calgary native.

Winnipeg Sun: Jets draft pick hopes to make mark in net. Eric Comrie is a likeable young man who seems eager to take his place as a Comrie playing in the NHL. While he is aware of the things he needs to do to get to the NHL, he seems confident that he will be able to get it done.

Winnipeg Sun: Now for the hard part for Jets GM. With the draft over, fans are going to want to see names like Bogosian, Wheeler and Little signed to long term contracts sooner rather than later.

Winnipeg Sun: Give the kid a chance, Jets fans. I believe the angst stems from the desire to win now versus winning later. As I counselled on Saturday’s Illegal Curve Hockey Show on TSN from the NHL store in Midtown Manhattan, fans needs to be pragmatic and understand that this build will not be quick.

Sportsnet: Jets go bold with picks. Looks like the Jets are getting some kudos for their moves. What are your thoughts?

Ann Arbor.com: Winnipeg Jets draft Skyline grad Andrew Copp. The Michigan perspective on the Jets draft pick.

TSN: Looking back (video). Craig Button talks about the Jets first round selection and what a future pairing with Trouba might look like.

Jets news:

National Post: Grading the Canadian teams. If you were feeling any angst over the Jets picks they received an A+ in this assessment.

- the Winnipeg Sun's Ken Wiebe reported that former Jets prospect Zach Yuen will be heading off to Dallas Stars prospect camp. He was not offered a deal by Winnipeg and wasn't picked up during Sunday's draft in New Jersey by any other teams.

Winnipeg Sun: Jets lock up defenceman Grant Clitsome for three years. The always smiling Grant Clitsome is a big fan of this city and now has three more years to enjoy his time here. There will be a conference call tomorrow at 9 am so stay tuned to IC on twitter (@illegalcurve) as we will be covering it as well as GM Cheveldayoff’s presser which will begin at 9:30 am.

Winnipeg Free Press: MTS Centre to host Baizley memorial service. He was a legend in this city and it is only appropriate that he is given a proper send off. At the draft Commissioner Gary Bettman took a moment at the start to give Baizley his due and express the loss the league feels with his passing.

Illegal Curve: Jets extend qualifying offers to 13 players. The Winnipeg Jets announced yesterday they extended qualifying offers to the following 13 players to retain their negotiation rights.

Illegal Curve: Jets release 2013-14 exhibition schedule. Hope Jets fans plan on bringing me a birthday present as the first exhibition game coincides with my bday. Check out the schedule. Which games you planning on attending?

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets won’t be flying the free-agent skies anytime soon. The reality is the big name free agents are either looking for a chance to win now or a big pay day. The Jets are not yet in the former category. Some may look at the Clitsome deal as an overpay but to get the deal done before other teams had an opportunity to chat with him the Jets had to step up.

Winnipeg Free Press: Clitsome signing part of Chevy’s plan to piece together Jets lineup. The most important thing that needs to be done is locking up the big three RFAs on this roster. Here is a link to Richard’s analysis he did a few months back on what the Big 3 RFAs (Little, Bogosian and Wheeler) might garner. Once that is done, the Jets GM can fill out the rest of the roster with available pieces.

Winnipeg Sun: GM Cheveldayoff ‘active’ in looking at free agents. This team is still going to need some help to fill out the roster for next season.

National Post: Sign Clitsome, keeping talks open with goaltender Al Montoya. Taking a look at the moves the Jets have made and the ones they are looking to make.

National Post: Grading the Canadian teams. A late addition to yesterday’s papers, this looked at all the Canadian teams draft day and they gave the Jets an A+. Does that give you confidence?

Illegal Curve: GM Kevin Cheveldayoff teleconference. Primarily the call was about the Clitsome signing but he also touched upon other topics of concern for his team. The post can be read or you can listen to the audio of the conference call.

Illegal Curve: Grant Clitsome conference call. Spoke with media following the signing of his new three year contract. The post can be read or you can listen to the audio of the conference call.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Expect nothing, Jets fans… …and you won’t be disappointed. Slow and steady wins the race is the mantra the Jets are employing so it seems unlikely they will jump ship in an attempt to make a splash.

Winnipeg Free Press: One more free agent returns Jets’ pipes are full. The team got him back for a pretty cheap price (1 year at 601 K) and if he can stay healthy, he can handle some of the load that Pavelec carried last season.

Winnipeg Sun: Five trade targets for the Jets. Ken provides a list of five interesting targets for Winnipeg. Which player is one you covet?

Winnipeg Sun: Plenty of talent for Winnipeg Jets to target in NHL free agency. Taking a look at how thin this team currently is, they are going to need to get some stop-gap talent into the roster for this season.

Winnipeg Sun: Ron Hainsey and other Winnipeg Jets UFAs drawing plenty of interest. Plenty of teams are getting ready to overpay despite the fact that the cap is heading down. The speculation is that both Antropov and Hainsey have played their last games as members of the Jets.

Illegal Curve: Winnipeg Jets 2013 Development Camp. The Jets announced the times, dates and participants in their 2013 Development camp.

Note: Tune into the Illegal Curve Hockey Show on TSN Radio 1290 from noon to 3 pm cst today as the guys discuss all the latest news from around the NHL with a special focus on the moves made by your Winnipeg Jets. Guests: Jim Nill (Dallas Stars GM), Michael Traikos (National Post).

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Chevy says team better today due to trades. There can be no question that these two trades (Frolik and Setoguchi) have immediately improved the Jets on the wing. As Gary says in his article Setoguchi is a shooter, which will be interesting to see how he mixes with Evander Kane as presumably he would line up on the right side of the 2nd line.

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets keep their heads. While fans want to see their teams name flashing across the screen or trending on twitter, perhaps the best move are the ones that you don’t make. When you see some of the money and term thrown at UFAs, it makes you realize that the Jets GM likely did this franchise a service by not selling the farm to bring in a player. The fact is that the Jets team is not yet one competing for Lord Stanley’s mug so they continue to add pieces when they can as the prospect pool deepens and develops.

Winnipeg Sun: Cheveldayoff’s attention now on signing Jets’ own RFAs. While making a splash on the UFA market might look good on Sportscenter, the most important task for the Jets GM is getting the Big 3 RFAs signed as soon as possible. Winnipeg will be able to breathe a collective sigh of relief knowing that the team’s future has been locked up.

Illegal Curve: Jets trade 2014 2nd Round pick for Devin Setoguchi of the Wild. While it appeared to fans and media that the Jets weren’t going to make any news on the first day of free agency, late in the day news spread that they had swung a deal with the Minnesota Wild.

Illegal Curve: What Does A Number Four Defenceman in the NHL Make? After the Jets signed Grant Clitsome to his contract this week, Richard took a look at the average salaries for NHL defencemen based upon ice time.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Disgruntled Burmistrov stomps off to Kazan. Despite protests it was quite clear that this situation wasn’t going to be resolved cleanly and we saw this occur as the team and player decided to take a time out for a couple of seasons.

Winnipeg Sun: The Burmistrov bungle. There is enough blame to go around for the way this situation played itself out. Unfortunately for fans the Jets no longer have a useful centre, a position they don’t exactly have an abundance of strength at and will be forced to make a move to acquire some more depth.

Winnipeg Sun: Burmistrov bolts, Setoguchi speaks. Ken adds his thoughts on the latest news stories to come out of Winnipeg yesterday.

Winnipeg Free Press: ‘Really exciting’ says Setoguchi on playing for Winnipeg Jets. He said all the right things and it will be interesting to see how he fits into the mix next season.

Illegal Curve: Setoguchi conference call. If you missed it, we have all the audio from Devin Setoguchi’s conference call with the media yesterday. If you cannot listen at work we also have some of his statements that were tweeted during the call.
