There was 2 options for the conditional, either he re-signs or the Pens advance to the ECF which we did so the Sharks are getting another 2nd

I see.

Well... that blows. They may as well not have even made the ECF, ya know?

Twist the knife a little bit more.

Well Shero should have at least said SCF or nothing. I mean seriously it was pretty easy to accept from the Sharks POV that the Pens were going to be at least in the ECF

It was probably easy for the Sharks to accept that deal if it were a 2013 2nd rounder, alone.

Murray was universally considered horrible for San Jose.

If it doesn't matter whether we re-sign him or not (the pick has already been lost), then I'd prefer to re-sign him.

He was serviceable and brings a combination of Hal Gill-like presence on the PK and overall toughness that is badly needed here.

our defense needs to get more mobile, better at supporting the offense and cheaper. Douglas Murray is the opposite of all of those things. I would like him if we didn't have Engo and Bort, but I'd rather keep those guys for cheap and let Murray go.

We had a big problem with other teams crashing the crease. Murray helped that to some extent, but I think I would go crazy watching him plod around over the course of an 82-game season. I don't think the Pens will re-sign him because he isn't mobile, etc. But I don't see anyone in their system who will fix the clearing-the-crease issue.

If Letang gets moved and Orpik - Martin becomes our Bylsma dream-pairing, do you think Elmer and Murray would be a good pair? I can see them covering for each other's weaknesses to some degree and having complimentary skill sets while both bringing the nasty when needed.

Bortuzzo can do it just fine.

Heck of a third pairing. Terrible second pairing. Murray can't cover top end players. I'd prefer if Despres didn't have the pressure of providing 100% of his line's puck movement and offensive support.

I wouldn't mind Shero going D with our 1st pick in the 3rd round. If Matt Murphy is there, take him, he can be a Morrow-lite replacement or something along those lines.

How else will we trade for Jamie Langenbrunner at the deadline without more D prospects?

If our first pick ends up being 77, and Bob McKenzie's rankings turn out to be reflective generally of where guys are picked in the draft... what do you want to bet we pick Jordan Subban?

Will enjoy watching Subban vs. Subban matchups in a couple years. I wonder if they'll fight. MORE ELITE D!

Yea I think you have to pair Despres with a stay at home d type. Either Bortuzzo or Murray makes a lot of sense.

I'm not a huge fan of the Martin/Orpik pairing but I do get why Bylsma plays them together.

If Letang gets moved, we absolutely need to find another top 4 d-man. Despres - Murray might not be the worst 2nd pairing in the league, but it would be the worst among playoff hopefuls.

Tony Granato's brother, Don, is head coach of the USNTDP?

I wonder if we'll pick players from that program.

This draft is going to be incredibly boring with the Pens drafting so late.

I wouldn't be surprised to see us pick up some early picks.

As a complete side conversation, I finally got motivated to look at some possible prospects for the Penguins at #77. I found a couple of interesting picks

77 - Remi Elie, LW, London NHL.com #71 North American skater
89 - JC Lipon, C, Kamloops #83 North American skater
119 - Jonny Brodziki, C, St. Cloud State #132 North American skater
164 - Frank Palzzese, G, Kitchener #31 goalie
179 - Willie Raskob, D, Shattuck - St. Mary's #179 North American skater
209 - Jacob Montgomery, C, Shattuck - St. Mary's

I based this off of nothing much more than some generic descriptions and the fact that the Penguins have prospects who play or played for most of these teams.

Frankly I hope it is boring because that will mean we have signed Letang to a decent contract.

Even so I believe we'll trade other guys for a 2nd rounder or two.
