Pierre has a great gig with NBC. He probably making more money than some coaches in the league. In the past he said he would only leave it for a GM job.

There is similarities between what people said about Renney and Torts, WE GET IT. Can we move on now?

Considering the connection he has with some of the players, it's conceivable...

I'm sure he would come back, why wouldn't he?

I'm trying to think of precedence there (besides Billy Martin).

Compare to lets say the pens last year... They had what, 5/6 guys that hit 25 goals? And thats with crosby out of the lineup.

Who are these guys that are going to explode goals wise in a new system? Nash, sure. Who else? Is Hagelin going to score 20+? I doubt it. Who else? Stepan? Maybe. Zucc? Very doubtful.

This team, like always, is top heavy. It was much better in 11-12 with Dubi and Anisimov, but its never had the scoring depth to not rely on 2-3 guys. And next year wont be any different.

Can compare to a team like Stl, that has what, 7 or 8 20 goal scorers on the roster, but no real superstar. They beat teams by having everyone on that team a threat to score. Sort of similar to how Boston wins.
Let me say this now before we get a new coach, its going to take time to steer this ship around.

The better teams around us has built in the right direction for years now. You start with drafts and then in D1 in camp, and then year in and year out try to improve the product you put on the ice. Babcock is now benefitting from work done in Detroit 20-22 years ago, undoubtedly.

Torts got the players he wanted. Torts couldn't work with skill. He needed all players to have size and be perfect mentally and have the characters to be able to out work the opposition. You give in certain areas to get in others, we have given up alot in the skill department.

Nah, the entire organizational mindset, when it comes to developing young players, changed in 04 and has continued. We might not have done a tank and rebuild style of team development, but we definitely did a competitive rebuild.

Granato wasn't a particularly able head coach. I'd rather Joe Mullen.

What do you mean by moving on? If you mean continuing to pretend that a coaching change will fix everything, I would say no, we cannot move on.

No, don't be childish. What you describe would be labled as rebuilding 9 times in 9 years.

We had not made the POs since 97 in 2003. We had a fire sale. We had two top 10 picks in the draft before that. We haven't traded picks or prospects. We have built in one direction to get where we are now.

It wasn't a Pittsburgh rebuild, but it was certainly a rebuild.

Who did those guys in Pittsburgh play with? Even with injuries that team has robust talent. Not many teams can say that, they have to get more out of what they have because they don't tank.

As to who is going to be more/less productive next year we'll have to see what happens. I think opening it up will allow the top six to produce more, I don't have any delusions of our bottom six exploding offensively. But there is a whole off season to see what happens. Bring in a legit top 6 wing and I'm not talking about a 40 goal guy or anything like that, but a guy who shows flashes and is semi consistent at least and we drop a few guys down to the 3rd that should rightfully play there in Hagelin and Callahan, and then we have a very solid 3rd line and the talent is distributed throughout the lineup much better.

I heard the same thing with previous Rangers coaches. "This team has the talent, the coach is holding them back!". Fool me once......
Ok. Fine. Dislike? Anyway, what happened when Renney left and Torts came? We started winning with a similar roster. I firmly believe that teams change and outgrow coaches especially teams going through a rebuild or a semi rebuild like we did after the lockout. Renney got us as far as he could, Torts came in and took us farther and got us where he could. Now a new guy comes in and depending on his coaching ability could take us to the promise land or fall flat and we could wallow in mediocrity for the next 3-4 years.

Obviously a big part of that will have to do with our roster, I don't think we're the worst team ever and I don't think we are the 2nd coming of the 80's Oilers or anything either. I think we are above average and have some solid pieces. We obviously need a little more depth.

As to the last coach and those threads who cares? Past is the past, has no bearing on whether or not Torts failed or this roster wasn't good enough. That's just fans being fans, I was probably one of them although I did like Renney.

We missed the playoffs in Tortorella's first full season as Rangers coach. We had a 12-7 record with him and squeaked into the playoffs over Florida in his very short season. Tortorella began to have success in 2010-11 with a very, very different team.

In my opinion, the reasons Torts had to go:

1. Couldn't handle the media. Saying Hagelin sucks 10 times, you just don't do that. Yelling at the journalists sometimes telling them to **** off...no.

2. He failed to get the star players going. Having to bench Richards, one of the best paid players on the team, is a pretty serious problem for the coach. Nash struggled too.

3. He didn't play the rookies like he should, playing 3 minutes a game wont make them better.

4. Lack of scoring, not enough offense.

5. Lousy powerplay.

Goodbye Torts, now you have more time to take care of your four dogs.

Wasn't that similar. More than half of the goals scored after Torts took over were scored or assisted by Antropov, Avery or Morris--players Renney didn't have.
