Sharks sign Tomas Hertl to entry-level contract

Renaud Lavoie @RenLavoieRDS
Tomas Hertl signed his ELS contract with Sharks. Hertl was the Sharks first round pick in 2012. #RDS

Guess he got out of his final year w/ Slavia.

Coyle turned out great, Toffoli turned out great, let's hope higher picked Hertl will turn out great.

Wouldn't be surprised if he's in SJ next year. RT @RenLavoieRDS: Tomas Hertl signed his ELS contract with Sharks.

I wouldn't either...it all depends on how his game translates to NA. If (and it's not a sure thing) it's a smooth transition I could see him as either the #3C or on the wing on a scoring 3rd line.

Still think he might end up spending some time in the AHL next season at some point though.

Yeah, I don't expect a seamless transition. #3RW seems reasonable to start.

I think his coach let him out of his last year because Hertl was promised a spot in SJ. I don't think he'd leave and I don't think his coach would let him leave to play in Worcester. I'd be okay with

Gali/FA-Thornton-Burns/FA
Marleau-Couture-Torres/Havlat
Hertl-Pavs-Torres/Havlat

Getting people to play with Thornton is the question mark. I want Burns back on defense but if we want Pavs to center a scoring 3rd line, we don't have enough forward depth. I have my doubts about Gali with Thornton in the top 6 fulltime as well.

I seriously doubt it.

According to a Czech report someone posted there was a 'buy out' option on his contract.

I'd prefer:

Marleau - Couture - FA/Trade/Havlat
Galiardi - Thornton - Burns
Torres/Wingels/Havlat - Pavelski - Hertl
some combo of Wingels/Desardins/Burish/Sheppard/Kennedy 4th line

If we can re-sign Torres, and retain two or all of Gali/Shep/Desi as RFA... we really only need one big move to try and get a top 6 winger. Tough, but if we release/amnesty Havlat that would give us the cap space to do something. Plenty of depth.

Yes. I believe the Sharks had to pay his team somewhere in the $50,000 - 100,000 range to get him out of the contract. I'll see if I can find the exact number again. I don't recall right now.

Edit: Ok, so more than I thought.

"It looks like if the Sharks do want him this summer, they will get him. (For those who cannot read in Czech, the article says that Czech league clubs have agreed upon a new agreement between the IIHF and the NHL which would allow NHL clubs to sign European players even with existing contracts, after paying a 200 000 $ fee)."

Definitely want Torres to play papa bear protector for Hertl.

Torres-Pavs-Hertl is not a bad line

The Sharks didn't draft Toffoli?

Sharks took Coyle 28th that year. Toffoli was selected 47th.

Yeah but I'm 100% sure they would have if Coyle wasn't available. He's a 67 after all. He was a mock draft pick around here so I see him as one of our own in a way.

It won't be and taking him out of his natural center position isn't going to help. Let him play 3C.

Right. Why did he include Toffoli along with Coyle is beyond me.

I do wish the Sharks had picked up E. Etem. Would have made trading Boyle an easier decision.

I can't wait for Hertl to play here. He looked way bigger than I thought he'd be.

It will be good for his development to get him playing in North America. I just hope they don't rush him to the NHL let him play half to full AHL season, if needed, before prime NHL time.

While I would agree with the thought of not rushing him, I can't see him agreeing to come here to play in Worcester. I can't say it's out of the question definitively but I have to believe a spot in San Jose is his to lose. I also wouldn't want Sommer to get his hands on him. lol
