i still believe he is best suited for 2c duties, and if the sharks want to do good post thornton and marleau. couture or pavs will either need to make huge gains in potential or find another superstar to fill in the 1c role.

What was the old forumla for a SC winning team?

1) Vezina-quality goaltending
2) Norris defenseman
3) Two "star" centers
4) Goal-scoring winger star
5) Scoring depth
6) Shutdown line

You need 4/6 to win? Something like that.

The troubling thing for the Sharks, is that post Thornton and Marleau, they don't have 1 through three. There is no one in the pipeline in any position who is likely to fit those roles. They don't have that goal-scoring winger either. All they could have is the scoring depth and a shutdown line.

Plus, those assets are unlikely to be acquired via draft, even if the team drafts really low.

#1 they had this season, and a few odd games here and there thrown in during previous seasons.

#2 they have never had

#3 they have had since thornton arrived

#4 they have had every year also, 1st cheechoo, then marleau/heatley/to lesser extents couture/pavs/seto

#5 haven't had since thornton arrived

#6 haven't had either since thornton arrived.

until number 5 and 6 get taken care of with the sharks the sharks will always be a good team, but not a great team. thornton can get a crap team to the playoffs, he has done it before (maybe not so much now, but earlier years yes). but once teams start to tighten up defensively and not give thornton his time and space so he has less room to dominate the sharks are easy to shut down.

NHL feature on Hertl
Quote:
Hertl, 19, said his goal is to play in San Jose next season, but said if the team felt some time in the minor leagues was needed, he would go to the American Hockey League.

"They might send me to play in the AHL," Hertl said. "Players like [Jiri] Hudler or Vladimir [Sobotka] had to go through this path, too, and they've developed into regular NHL players. That might happen here, too, and I am ready to fight for my spot at the team. I hope I would get some chance to show my best hockey."

Privately though he's saying "haha they have no forwards, I'm a shoe in!"

To be fair, #5 and #6 are often mutually exclusive. The third line is what is essential for both, and it is really going to be an either/or. It would be very rare to have 3 scoring lines and then a great 4th-line shutdown line.

Also, I'd say the Sharks have had scoring depth in many years; that depth just didn't show up when it needed to. The Pavelski-Wellwood line, Malhotra's line in 2010, etc.

He could top $1 million, is that normal for most 1st round picks to sign entry level contracts like that because of bonuses and all?

Logan's was 1.337m if I recall correctly. It's all about how high in the draft you are.

Tennyson's contract is up there too...potential is in the $1.2M neighborhood.

brand new Czech article about Slavia and Hertl : http://www.hokej.cz/cz/tipsport-extr...zu-tomas-kral/

has said : Everybody is right, but new deal between NHL and IIHF is still not signed. So, Hertl is under threat of suspensions... Is right amount of pay fee 325 K USD ?
