Washington's 1st rounder is available

This is completely me reading too much into a random tweet but...

per Aaron Portzline
Quote:
#Caps GM George McPhee seems less enthused by this draft class than just about anybody else I've encountered.
If McPhee is that down on the draft, when a variety of other scouts have said it's maybe the best draft class since 2003, you'd have to think he'd be very open to the idea of moving the pick. The Caps pick 23rd overall, for the record.

Would the Caps be interested in Grabovski @ 4M + a B-level prospect for the 1st if they can't re-sign Ribeiro?

I guess they could try and package it... They are fairly cap strapped with having to resign Alzner and Johansson, and that's before even trying to re-sign Ribs. I think this may be a case of GMGM just keeping things tight-lipped.

This draft class is great... but the Caps pick 23rd. It could've been the best since '03, but it's irrelevant because at 23, the differential is not that great. I tihnk Caps could trade down into the early second and get some serviceable veteran player for a change.

From what I'm reading, it seems like many GMs aren't all that excited over the depth of this year's draft. Could this be another 1996 like quality draft? Perhaps.

Maybe he's fine with what he can get in the first two rounds but doesn't care about later? That's probably where we'll see picks moved.

McPhee generally doesn't do enthusiasm.

I think you could take 90% of his photos and write "Not amused" under them.
P.S. After playoff exits it should be "I ain't even mad".

for a deep draft .. it seems pretty meh after the first 10 or so picks.. Really wide open after the 20th.

Caps don't have much cap space to make moves..depending on what McPhee does with Schultz, Wardo and ribs.

What do the Caps want, realistically?
Grit?

Brian Boyle + future 4th for 23rd overall.

Discussions w/Hawks fans at the boards over the last year were favorable as to something around Boyle and D Dylan Olsen as principals. Olsen was a late (20 something) first.

28th pick and probably not more than a 5-8th D. 23th this year is top-6 F or top-4 D.

You know, I think we've got the rights to Anton Gustafsson lying around here somewhere. He was a 21st overall pick the year before Olsen, so I guess he's worth a late first too. How about we give you him instead?

He's probably trying to trade out of round one. Compensation being a player or prospect NHL ready. Maybe he hates the draft. It's impossible to justify trading Forsberg.

Yes, grit.
Ryan Callahan

Just FYI:
Quote:
The Washington Capitals' first-round pick went to the Chicago Blackhawks as the result of a trade on June 24, 2011 that sent Troy Brouwer to Washington in exchange for this [26th overall] pick.
Realistically, something like a 3rd or a B prospect and a very early second for 23rd would do it I think.

EDIT: Some research showed price should be even higher. Say, in 2011:
Quote:
6.* The Anaheim Ducks' first-round pick went to the Toronto Maple Leafs as the result of a trade on June 24, 2011 that sent Boston's first-round pick in 2011 (30th overall) and Toronto's second-round pick in 2011 (39th overall) to Anaheim in exchange for this pick [22nd overall].[18]
7.* The Detroit Red Wings' first-round pick went to the Ottawa Senators as the result of a trade on June 24, 2011 that sent Ottawa and Chicago's second-round picks in 2011 (35th and 48th overall) to Detroit in exchange for this pick [24th overall].[18]
Teams that may have the pieces: CBJ (LAK first+44th), DAL (BOS first+40th).

Not just you, although unlike most I actually like the Erat move which seems to have put him in the crosshairs for most. Maybe that is because I have seen a ton of Erat in division for years, but I think he is a good piece despite Forsberg going the other way.

I think he just panicked and jumped the gun way too quick. It's been said the organization wasn't as high on Forsberg everyone seems to think. It was a very poor return, but I'm assuming he wanted to fill a quick whole and try and win it all.

With that said, I think his hockey intelligence just may not be as high as some other GM's in the league. There could've been a much better return than Erat. The guys made some great moves for the organization, and then some complete bonehead mistakes. So I'm still torn. I'd like to see what someone else can do.

On topic, I wouldn't mind trading out of the first round if it grants a decent center or some power.

Erat's good and all but personally I almost never like the idea of trading 31 year olds for teenagers.

Not to hijack the thread, but Grabovski and the Boston 1st that Dallas holds make the basis of a nice trade if the Leafs are interested.
