If you get a prospect that ends up like Milan Michalek at 20th overall, you're jumping for joy.

Well if this is supposed to be like the 2003 draft I would hope we could end up with someone a little more Kesler, Richards, Perry, Bergeron-esque.

Been looking at some interesting looks at some of the prospects done by an Oilers site, actually. The guy is looking at the prospects and comparing their performance in their draft year (and sometimes their draft -1 year) and comparing their levels there with other players of similar performance. Not sure how reliable it is, but has made for some interesting reads. Latest one they did was on Burakowski, actually.

Anyone more knowledgeable than I about prospect rankings (not difficult, heh) read his stuff and have any comments?

They're very interesting reads but when it comes to 18 years olds I don't think it's a good idea to put as much stock as Reynolds does into production alone.

That was a really good read! I checked out a lot of his profiles, changes my opinion on a lot of guys.

Yeah, he's just looking at the stats. I think it's very interesting (I particularly liked the one he did on Lehkonen today) but it ignores a lot of key factors. However, he seems to recognize this and isn't trying to draw end-all be-all conclusions, just get a sense of how a prospect's production historically translates.

just noticed that brent burns had horrible numbers in his draft year

only 15 goals/25 assists as a forward in the OHL (68 games)

10th on his team in points

yet he got drafted 20th overall, strange

Would you prefer to have a blue-chip forward prospect or blue-chip D prospect at this point? Boyle has a couple years left in him, and I believe having a top-D prospect would benefit this team much more. This draft is deep in forwards, so I say we wait until the second round for forwards, and get a sure bet on D. I would love to trade up. Maybe give up Demers and the 20th overall to move up. If we can pull someone out of the draft that has Pietrangelo/Weber/Blake style of play or Boyle/Voynov/Mcdonough style, we will have someone to fill the shoes of Boyle when retirement roles around... Marleau and Thornton are 3 years younger... Thoughts!?

Honestly, if they are keeping burns up top, taking the best dman at 20 may not be a horrible idea. but i really like tennyson, and ive heard a lot of good stuff about some of our other prospects. we arent going to grab a #1 two way guy at 20 anyway, so it depends on who is available and it a trade is there to move up. draft days are probably really tricky.

Whoever they feel is the best available prospect at the time. There is really no pressing need to move up and really if they can gain an extra second rounder by moving back 2-5 spots, they should do that. But it doesn't really matter who they pick, they can use quality youth at any position except for goalie.

true enough. its not like a draft pick outside of the top 3 will fill an immediate need anyway. honestly, just reading this thread i doubt a D Man will be the best available at 20.

If they keep the pick long enough to actually make it to San Jose, I will be impressed. lol Seeing as how Hertl is going to be the first guy in five drafts to suit up for San Jose as a 1st round draft pick.

Pick the BPA always, needs aren't relevant.

Doug Wilson compared upcoming draft to the now legendary 2003 draft. #SJSharks have their first round pick, and three in second round.

In 2003, Doug Wilson moved up to get Steven Bernier.

Would have been perfectly fine if he moved up and grabbed Parise, Burns, Getzlaf, or Perry, but alas, picked the bust amongst the boom-busts.

As an aside, I really like this draft, I hope we hit a home run.

Well the thing about that draft was that all four picks he had, he was one or two draft picks ahead of the picks that got Suter, Parise, Bergeron, and Weber. So if things went perfectly we could've had all 4 of those guys.

The draft order went:
6. Milan Michalek
7. Ryan Suter

16. Steve Bernier
17. Zach Parise

43. Josh Hennessy
45. Patrice Bergeron

47. Matt Carle
49. Shea Weber

So that sucks but whatever.
