Antti Raanta

24 year old finish goaltender who plays for Assat Pori in the finish elite league, he is literally putting up NHL 13 Numbers.

Should buffalo look at him?

I'm sure Buffalo scouts have seen him, as I'm sure they were keeping tabs on Armia.

Maybe Juzmo or Qurpiz could lend a comment.

Funny, my NHL 13 goalies always have a save percentage in the mid 80's.

But sure, why not? If he'd leave what is probably a really great gig to come here and play in Rochester at best.

If he wants to come over by all means. Though Hackett/Makarov/Knapp/Lieuwen is decent depth down there. If Miller is traded and Hackett makes the big team, then re-signing Leggio is a possibility as well.

jBuds and his GDT goal-scorer spelling had me thinking this was the "anti-rant" thread.

There are some rumblings out there pointing towards the Hawks signing him.
I'd guess we hear after the WC is finished.

Buffalo can't turn its nose up at any "free" talent. I won't pretend to know anything about this guy, but when we added Makarov as "free" prospect he immediately entered the conversation as our best hope for a future starter. We've since added Hackett but we still have a very fluid goalie outlook both short-term and long-term whether it be starter, back-up, or AHL. We could certainly use another in the mix as I suspect Leggio will leave if he doesn't feel he won't get a shot at our roster.

My thought process as well, he also fits the age profile for a rebuilding team(24). I think we should at least take a look at him.

Platform to fame and fortune; Raanta the latest goalie to come from nowhere at Worlds:
Quote:
“It’s not the Cinderella story that people might think. Antti has, naturally, worked hard for years, and has played well for a few years now, too,” says Finnish national team goaltending coach Ari Moisanen who has known Raanta for over a decade.

Yes, Raanta did record the Finnish major junior league’s best save percentage a few years ago, and was on his way to make a breakthrough two years ago when he got injured, but this season has been his big break. Raanta led his Ässät Pori to a Finnish championship after the team went from very cold to very hot in a few months, and rose from a twelfth place in February to fourth in the standings, and then going all the way in the final.

It doesn’t matter how you get to the top, what matters is that you get to the top. Raanta is younger than Laco or Fasth, the All-Star goalies of the two last tournaments, but just like them, he’s poised to make his international breakthrough.
Hiller and Fasth are the two previous success stories from the Worlds.
Quote:
“It’s the work that Antti has put in that’s bearing fruit now, and his fundamentals are now consistently good, and that’s what you need more than highlight reel saves,” he adds.

Not that Raanta didn’t make any highlight reel saves in his first game against Slovakia. He did. And they were registered by the many scouts and club managers in the stands. Raanta has signed a two-year contract with HIFK Helsinki in the SM-liiga, but he’s expected to use an out clause in his contract and sign with an NHL or a KHL team instead.

Can't beat free talent. Here's hoping Armia can hook a brother up.

Well there's not much to tell about him that isn't already said. Won the equivalent to Hart and Conn Smythe trophies of Finland, with the championship.

Technically he's immaculate (so I've been told by people who understand that dark art). Excellent reflexes, however, you won't see a YT highlight video of his saves, because there aren't much. He reads the play so well, he usually doesn't need to make any desperation saves. Fantastic in the locker-room, hot girlfriend. I bet he smells nice too.

Of course, I'm somewhat biased. The guy did take Ässät to championship.

I am hoping that an NHL team sings him, because that means all the transfer moneys goes to Ässät (with some of it going to Lukko, his team 3 years ago), if he goes to KHL all the money goes to IFK, with whom Raanta has a contract for the next 2 years.

It looks like the Wild are strongly considering Raanta (per Russo):
Quote:
The Wild is pursuing free agent goalie Antti Raanta, 24, the Finnish Elite League’s MVP. With Josh Harding’s health uncertain and Matt Hackett now property of Buffalo, the Wild wants to add depth to a stable that includes young goalies Darcy Kuemper and Johan Gustafsson.

Like Backstrom (a European free agent in 2006), Raanta was a late bloomer. He backstopped his team, Assat Port, to the SM-liiga title with a 1.45 goals-against average and .955 save percentage, winning playoff MVP.

Raanta can sign as early as Saturday and the Wild would bring him to training camp to see if he can earn a spot. If not, he could play at AHL Iowa or return to Finland, where he would play for IFK, which is partly owned by Backstrom.
Edit: Decision made .. team TBA.

Raanta tweets in Finnish, but now teases NHL fans in English.

May not be a team decision. It's probably just a decision on either the NHL or KHL.

I remember an article a month ago Raanta saying he's not really interested in KHL, wanted to play in NHL because the best players in the world play there.

I'm sure we'll hear about the team in the next few days. Here's hoping he does cross the pond right away, and not be loaned to HIFK for next season

I could've sworn I read that it was down to three NHL teams -- EDM, MIN, ___.

It looks he has decided where he goes. I guess we can expect some team make it public today or if there's signing to be done, after it.

Per our sources Chicago has signed Finnish UFA goalie Antti Raanta. Playoffs MVP in Finnish league this year. #blackhawks #nhlfi

Interesting. On second glance, Chicago is a great fit. Emery will probably get a nice raise over his current contract, here they get a presumably cheap replacement. From Raanta's perspective he should have the opportunity to put up strong standard numbers when he sees the ice.

I wonder if Regier is calling up Edmonton and Minnesota about Miller now?

I was thinking about Miller to Edmonton on Saturday. I know they have Dubnyk, but a guy like Miller with that young core could actually do some damage.

Chicago obviously. Since Crawford is horrible and they need to upgrade to Miller, and Raanta is now insurance.
