If we reunited him with Lindros and York as assistants we could have the "superFLY" coaching team

So, we can now start to nominate active players?

I'd like Stu Bickel to coach this team. He has experience playing both offense and defense and has lots of time watching the game.

DAM*!!!

I wrote a post on him but didn't post. Talk about dropping the ball.

My point was just that there is alot of talk about motivation skills and also how its hard to predict what would happen with a unexperienced coach.

Because seriously, what would happen if Slats tomorrow announced that Theo Fleury was our new coach? It might affect us on the UFA market/when it comes to resigning our new players. But when camp started? When the seasons started? Would the players not work hard because Theo was the coach? Would Callahan stop forechecking? Would Girardi stop blocking shots? Would McD start being sloppy with the puck in his own end? Would Hank stop preparing before games?

I've several times heard of very successful teams, even coaches, who the players basically thought was worthless. How the players descibed the coach as someone who just was in the way and how they had to coach themselves basically.

Its certainly possible, but I really hope the Rangers don't decide to test that experiment.

Hartford was always full of Derek Armstrongs, Brad Smyths, and Todd Halls...hes winning with Yogans, Bourques, Hriviks.

I felt like his coaching style has been a bit hindered by Tortorella. Torts said himself that Gernander has skaters ready that know his system. He's not an incompetent person. He's a leader, he's play offense and defense, and he's been around a few NHL coaches.

I honestly wouldn't put too much stock into what some of the "scouts" on this board say. You can take what i say with a grain of salt, don't care. But I think he would know a little more about the game than someone who streams games over a computer. I would say overall...his job to develop and get kids ready for the NHL game...he's done a pretty good job at it considering some of the teams he's had to work with.

What makes him a terrible coach? His lines? System? Just wondering why everyone else on this board thinks hes bad.
And here is another problem. Bringing in a new coach to the NHL level along with a new system affects Hartford as well. For the last few years, the Torts system was used to develop the kids.....now what do the top prospects do when they hit the NHL level and the style of play has changed? How does that affect development?

I'm stating to wonder if the next coach will even be an offensive coach at all. You may have no choice to but get a guy who produce a system somewhat similar to what the team already has.

Should hire Kevin Stevens to be coach.

They did request permission to interview him, but I never heard whether or not the interview had actually taken place. He's been my guy from the get go.

The Rangers got permission but have not interviewed him —or anyone else for that matter. I think they are going to start interviews during their organizational meetings next week.

Ah, gotcha. Sounds like this team is going to be late to the party.

I think it also shows that they were never planning on dismissing Torts until something pretty drastic changed.

Agreed. All comes back to Hank's unhappiness with the team, I think.

So Hank ran a coach out. He better win a Cup like Messier did.

With the way the Rangers have been running things from the FO lately, I'd be surprised if any information of significant status leaks from there. Might not hear anything until the official press conference

The beat guys have been VERY quiet though these days. I suppose everyone deserves a little time off.

My gut says there were more players than just Hank, but if that's the case that means this core has run two coaches out of town in the last 4 years. That's.. a bit disconcerting.

Oh come on. Hank was the only reason Torts didn't get fired earlier.

It's a completely different core today than it was when Renney was fired.

If my memory serves correct, the last game Renney coached was against Toronto 2/22/09.

Players on that team who are still on the Rangers?

Lundqvist, Callahan, Girardi, Staal.

EDIT - completely different is an overstatement. But the core of the team from 09 to today certainly has a different set up.

Can't believe nobody mentioned Christopher Walken. He would be a tremendous presence behind the bench. "You're going about it all wrong...I don't like you're tone"

We just had the closest thing to Christopher Walken coach that we're ever going to have, and you want to bring that back?

I've got a fever, and the only prescription is more jam.

I always thought it was more than just Messier back in the day, too. Regardless, there is always a leader in something like that.

Well now we get to see how it works out. If we take a turn for the worst and Hank leaves after IF it was his fault then I'll be mad.

Got it. Brilliant.

If he promises to do that Weapon of Choice dance behind the bench every game then he has my vote!
