Some of my own speculation on Bylsma's name being dropped:

When you look at the situation he was dropped into in Pittsburgh, it was where he was stepping into a role that was vacated by a very abrasive, defense-first coach who had a somewhat similar exit that Torts did. Rubbed too many people the wrong way, threw a few players to the wolves in the media, and then failed to recapture the success that he had the previous year.

Bylsma came in and was a guy who was a players coach, and instead of instituting a sweeping change of styles, he gradually adjusted the strategy to ease the reigns that was stifling some of the offense. That being said, there was a whole lot more offense on that team to tap into than there is on this one, and once he finally put his stamp on the team.. well you can see what's happened in the playoffs the last couple years.

I think there's a connection there, but it's not a good one. Coach disco is a heck of a nice guy, but I don't think he would have the horses at his disposal here in NY that he could find success with. Also worth noting, he played the same yo-yo stuff with Depres and Bennett that Torts did with Kreider, and to some extent, JT Miller. I wouldn't put him on the really good end of "developmental" coaches.

I think Vigneault is a heck of a lot better than Bylsma when it comes to developing players, despite the stereotypes.

The problem with Bylsma is that he focused a lot of the stagnant offense that he "forgot" some defensive aspects of the game. A huge thing for the new coach is to come in and gradually work his schtick in but at the same time, to not completely abandon some of the old aspects.

If Bylsma keeps his job, Torts and Ruff will be fighting for a TSN gig.

Exactly. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills hearing about how the team with the great goalie and D should open it up and rely on the offense to win and lose games.

Would be surprised if Ruff isn't hired as the Stars' coach.

I would a little bit. But I was thinking that he'd find work somewhere in the Olympics next year or something. But Dallas is a pretty good possibility for him. He isn;t a bad coach, really. He just wore out his effective in Buffalo.

That would be a very good fit.

Didn't he tell Hodgson to suck it up or something during his second training camp where he was misdiagnosed with severe back injury?

Not sure if it was official. When Hodgson was shipped to Buffalo was when I started following him but he was sorta bummed in Van City.

Anyone remember the article posted here a while ago? Was pretty telling, both for pro and con.

Not sure about AV, but I remember Gillis absolutely tearing a new ******* for Hodgson at his end-of-season conference when they were eliminated by the Kings.

I remember hearing about that too. He's certainly grown and learned since then though if I may say so. But it does seem like he was buried behind other talent on that team, he was usually on the 3rd line IIRC

I don't see how they both suck. They're still both very young players that have shown flashes of good play. Kassian's been much improved in possession numbers and Hodgson's been a much improved 2-way center. Both players are still inconsistent though.

Regardless of who me sign, how long be people think the new coach will get?

If Torts was let go because he couldn't push them "over the top", will we be having this same speculative conversation in 2 off-seasons time if we don't get past the ECF?
