Brodeur OR Schneider: Who will be end up being the starter in 2013/14?

This thread is a continuation of the discussion that amassed over 1000 replies and therefore was locked:

Will the Schneider be the starting goalie?

Full Disclosure:

My interest in this issue comes from the fact that I'm a supporter of the Vancouver Canucks. However, Cory Schneider is probably my favourite NHL player not playing on Canucks, so I have a vested interest in seeing how he performs with his new team.

My own read on the situation is that it will be an "open" competition with Marty given his tenure and what he's meant to the Devils organization will be given claim the number one spot this season but I think as the season progresses, Cory will establish himself as the better goalie and therefore claim the number one spot.

I suspect by the New Year, this transition will take place where Cory will be the "clear" Number One goalie on the team.

In reply to one of the post that appeared in the previous thread:

Who exactly is Kevin Woodley and why should we care what he thinks?
As stated in an earlier post of mine's in that thread:

Hockey Writer, Kevin Woodley.

His bio: "Now covering Canucks for NHL.com after 10+ years with AP, USA Today + Hockey News; still stopping pucks for fun & picking NHL goalie brains for InGoal Magazine"

Anyway, the reason why I replying to this is that some of you who are interested in the technical aspects of goaltending might be hearing his recent appearance on local Vancouver Sports Talk Radio.

Yes, Mr. Woodley has a weekly segment on Thursday Mornings that discusses all aspects of goaltending.

He made his appearance a few hours ago (8:30AM PT/ 11:30ET) and for those interested, you can listen to the podcast here:

http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/TEAM1..._29_Hour3_.mp3

Fast forward to just past ~33 minutes.

I thought I'd mention it because, I'm not the only person that actually enjoys listening to "goalie" talk on a weekly basis, as evident from another member of hfboards who just made the following comment on the Canucks board:

Basically, a "Listener's Digest" version for those that don't want to hear his weekly appearance, it ran for about 20 minutes with Mr. Woodley touching upon Bobby Lu refining his technique this off-season but also touched upon Schneider and his "open Butterfly" style ad how the changes in Goalie Equipment will affect his game and other NHL goaltenders. He also talked quite a bit about Schneider's involvement in the Goalie Equipment rule changes and how the NHLPA was "stalling" the process when it came to the NHL proposals to limit the size of equipment last season.

As one of the guest hosts on the morning show quipped to the effect of saying "it's a good thing I don't have ADD" ... in reference to how Mr. Woodley went in intricate detail, talking for several minutes straight on the "techniques" of goaltending.

Compelling radio to listen to!

Marty until he slumps which will probably be by mid Nov. Cory takes the job and never looks back.

you can take the Schneider out of Vancouver, but you can't take the Vancouver out of the Schneider I guess.

I can see him slumping in October. Like I've been saying, Marty isn't known for being all that great in October. Aside from 08-09, I can't remember too many years where he's looked good in October since before the last lockout.

He was very good last January though. Likely because he was the closest he could be to January shape without playing any real games.

I voted Marty will begin as starter, and Schneider finish as starter. I could just as easily see them both splitting time though. Possibly if one is hot he'll get the starts until he's not, or if one is slumping the other will get starts until they start slumping.

Marty once benched himself for Hedberg when he thought he wasn't giving the team the best chance to win 3 years ago. I really don't think he's gonna pull any ish if he's relegated to backup because Schneider is outplaying him.

How does Brodeur react to being named the backup, if it does happen?

It's either going to be split down the middle or Marty plays a majority of the games.

I really don't see Marty losing the starter position this season unless he gets hurt or the team is in the basement. We SHOULD see a more even split of games compared to recent years, but who knows, really. This is still Marty's team, no matter how much we may wish it differently.

I really don't see how you can be so sure. Schneider is the better goalie in this point in their careers.

For the posters that think Marty will be the starter, how many starts do you see him getting this year if both are healthy?

With all the back-to-backs, they could very well split 41 games each.

Marty will get the first start of the season.

PDB will start giving them a fair 41/41 split.

The Schneider will get into a rhythm and will end up getting the most starts.

I expect the season to finish something like 55/27 split in favor of The Schneider.

I really do wanna see Marty get to 700 wins and 125 shutouts. He'd probably have to start the majority of games to do that this year, or come back for another season in 14-15. I'd welcome him back in 14-15, but would hope Schneider definitely gets 70-75% of starts that year.

He did get 31 wins in 11-12, though he had to play 59 games that year.
