Love the signing. Glad to see he gets rewarded. Three years is a bit long. I would have preferred two years. The cash is fine for me, he would have definitely got that on the open market.

People might not like the enforcer role in the NHL, but it exists and Bordeleau is one of the best guys in the league at playing that role. Even when he's not fighting he still makes a big difference in our lineup with his size, wingspan, effectiveness on the forecheck and willingness to lay the body every single shift.

Not anymore though.
We are so stacked at D, we might have 9 players that are either on 1-way contracts, or 2-way contracts, but are good enough to play in the NHL.

Even if we trim that down to 7, there still might not be a position for any UFA D-man (though it's a short list of wanted D-men).
And even if we trim that down to 7, we still have 12 forwards on 1-way contracts (counting Lando). There then is only two spots left. And that is by removing 2 D-men.

We are very stacked right now, with Bordy counting we have the 2nd most players on our roster. (source capgeek). I don't really see many trades that the management will make before mid-season, maybe a D-man is sent packing (if Jones is picked).
I don't see much else. But hey, if we stash Bordy in the minors he only costs us 100k for the cap, so it isn't a big deal.
Maybe I'm overreacting, but I just didn't feel the need to sign him.

1 way contract or not, I don't see Zanon, and maybe O'Brien making the team out of training camp.

You are overreacting right now.

The forwards under contract:
Duchene
O'Reilly
Landeskog
Stastny - Could be traded
PAP
Downie
McGinn
Jones - Could be bought out or traded
McLeod
Mitchell
Olver - Could be traded
Bordy

Still 2 more spots for the normal 14 forwards carried, with nobody leaving. Plenty of room to add what is needed.

Defensemen:

Johnson
Wilson - Could be traded, has value
O'Brien - Could be traded or bought out
Zanon - Could be traded, has little value
Hejda
Hunwick - Could be traded, has value
Barrie - 2 way contract, but earned NHL spot
Elliott - 2 way contract, could be sent down

Most teams carry 7 defensemen, so currently Elliott would have to be in Lake Erie if that was the case. I would expect at least 2 names to move out of that list. Still room to add 1 defensemen.

This is pretty funny.

You compare a 27 year old enforcer signing a three year deal at $1M per, under a $64M cap that is expected to go up to $70M+ in a year, to an enforcer that was 35-37 signing a three year deal at $1.1M per under a $59M cap. A guy who doesn't put up any more points than Bordy.

Darn, we're not aloud to say they're situations are not comparable what so ever?

I know the obvious diffrence between them, they are not identical twins, but pretty comparable players IMO. Shelley was as effective as Bordy when he was in his prime too. And as I stated, I know they are 10 years apart. But dont forget. The enforcers time in this league is starting to run out. I'm not sure Bordy is as needed in 3 years like he is today.

We have 6 1-way contracts on D (SOB, EJ, Baldy, Hejda, Hunwick, Wilson) and already 12 forwards (counting Lando) + 2 goalies.
That's now already 20 players on the roster.
We obviously should include Barrie and probably Elliott as well to the mix, which leads us to only being able to include 1 extra forward on the roster. This is bad, because we needed a top-6 player and a PK specialist. Now getting both is very difficult unless we unload a contract in a trade (Hunwick, SOB or Zanon for pick(s)? Mitchell, Olver for pick(s)?). Also, by picking Mac/Jones/Jonathan we are at full roster (as I expect them all to play here if they are drafted), so there is absolutely no room whatsoever on the team for a FA-signing.

What we have now is:

Downie-Duchene-PAP
McGinn-Staz-Jones (ugh)
Lando-ROR-Olver(/Mac/Drouin)
McLeod-Mitchell-Bordy
Olver (if Mac/Drouin are picked)/FA signing if someone is traded/Random minor league player (Vincour (please sign him after just trading for him)/Malone/Sgarbo)

Barrie-EJ
Hejda-Elliott/(Jones)
Wilson-SOB
Hunwick-Zanon
Elliott (If Jones is picked)

The roster is full, and the only way we are able to land any FAs is by making a trade where we ship more players out than bring in. I sincerely hope the management has a plan for this, as otherwise there might be no room for any improvements for the team.

This is the reason why I wasn't so keen on bringing him back. As we already have Cody, I didn't see the need to bring Bordy back.

I don't mind the 3-year deal, as he is easily tradable for a late pick to a team who needs an enforcer, and it also rewards Bordy for battling through the lesser leagues.

I really hope the management has a plan going forward with the roster that we have and what we should improve. Obviously the Bordy signing is a minor one, so it doesn't rock the boat so badly, but the hope of seeing Malone/Vincour/Sgarbossa up in the NHL is fading fast unless we get injuries which then would suck as well.

EDIT: Mods, I put this here cause it ties in the Bordy signing, but I think the rest of this discussion should continue in the roster moves thread.
This is also a big concern of mine.

Well he was 35 when he signed the deal, but you don't see a huge difference in risk signing an enforcer to a three year deal that will be 35-37 during it's course, versus an enforcer that will be 27-30 during the deal?

For one you have the over 35 rule right off the bat if they retire. An enforcer could retire at any minute, let alone the fact that an enforcer's effectiveness is like night and day when talking about their late 20's vs their late 30's.

I'm not even talking about the type of players they are. They both score at about the same rate too so that's not even a factor.

Happy for me, because I really like Bordy. Happy for Bordy because dying breeds like him don't usually get a lot of financial security. Happy for the community because he seemed to be rather active and who doesn't love a gentle giant to come visit their school, hospital or youth team? He'll play his ass off for Roy, too.

I also like the idea we have one guy who is actually dangerous out there, and I don't mean when he drops the gloves. He hits scary, and that helps in some of those games where the other team comes out trying to set a hard tone.

I'm praying to god Zanon isn't on this team next year.

No matter if we buy him out, trade him, or send him to Lake Erie.

This, the fact that, that neanderthal makes 2.25M disgusts me...

My ******* Grandmother could probably contribute more to the team than that ****er.

Hate is not a strong enough word for that slow lazy ****.

I have a feeling he'll be the one they might buy out in the summer, because there likely won't be any takers in trade or waiver wire. Especially when there were a few reports of the team not being too happy with him freaking out on reporters for walking on the Avs crest at the beginning of the season.

They'll wait another year on Jones probably.

I wonder what kind of team Roy wants.

Avs don't have a lot of tough players. Landeskog, Downie, McLeod, McGinn, Wilson and Bordeleau are all players who have some grit. Perhaps O'Brien too. I wonder if Roy wants to add some toughness to the team through free agency or trades.

I think our team has enough toughness. Most of them won't start it, but they sure as hell won't shy away from it either.

Seems a little pricey at first but than it looks pretty fair. 3 years as others have said is a little lengthy. Interesting to see how Roy uses him

I like the signing. He doesn't need to be in the lineup every night though. Get him in there for some hopeful rivalry games. Give him some more free reign to goon it up, he's not going to score goals.

A few of us on the Habs board were interested in Bordeleau. Obviously, that is not a possibility now, but it seems a lot of you really like this guy. Do you think he would have been a good fit for us?

He'd be a good fit for a lot of teams, as long as you weren't expecting more than a 4th line heavyweight enforcer, that can skate fairly well, make huge hits, and chip in 5-10 points a year while being a popular teammate.

After about 6 games, I knew I would like him. He is a great enforcer and you need a guy like him to pump the guys up with some good fights like the ones shown here. I'm pretty happy to have him for 3 more years.
