2013 Offseason Report
September 10, 2013
Alert- Long Post

Erne was selected 10th overall by the Rangers.

With a 2nd round sweep, the New York Rangers meant business in the 2013 NHL offseason. GM Flamesrule went right to work during the draft, gaining multiple picks. He also moved up to 10th overall, as he really wanted Adam Erne. Fortunately, Erne was still on the board, so GM Flamesrule made no hesitation to select him. “I was really happy to select him”, said GM Flamesrule. “I think he’ll become a great player in the upcoming years. He’s a strong, skilled, big guy, which I like.”

With the 14th overall pick (pick from the Tampa Bay trade), GM fAlemsrule went out and selected defenseman Darnell Nurse. Nurse, 182lbs, needs to gain some weight but it’ll come eventually.

In the 2nd round, GM Flamesrule had three different picks. With the picks, he chose two forwards and one defenseman. With the forward picks, he selected centerman Ryan Kujawinski and Curtis Lazar. Both are big guys, which fits GM Flamesrule’s criteria. He aslo selected defenseman Nikita Zadorov, who is a whopping 230 pounds!

When the 3rd round came, GM Flamesrule picked a goalie, Jake Pavelka. Pavelka could become a starting goaltender in the NHL one day. With the Chicago Blackhawks 4th rounder, GM Flamesrule picked another goaltender, Clint Windsor. Windsor will take some time to develop but Gm Flamesrule said it was worth it.

When the draft was completed, GM Flamesrule had to make some key decisions on who to keep and who to leave off the team. He decided that Ryane Clowe was no longer needed, so he didn't offer him a new contract. However, he did re-sign some key AHL players, such as Ben Ferriero and Nick Palmieri. All was not smooth, though. GM Flamesrule had some major trouble re-signing Mats Zuccarelo and Carl Hagelin. So, he decided that he was going to tender these players and hope for the best. The Winnipeg Jets offer sheeted Mats Zuccarello for 3.395 million dollars for four years. GM Flamesrule felt he didn't want to have him on contract that long, he he did not match the offer. That meant he was giving a compensation of a 2014 2nd round draft pick. A few days later, arch-nemisis, New York Islanders decided to offer-sheet Carl Hagelin to a 3.605 million dollar contract for three years. This time, GM Flamesrule did match. "Hagelin will be a big part of this team's success", said GM Flamesrule. "There was no way I was going to let go of Carl as he has the skill and the body to become a great NHLer."

Going to start a new GM this week. Will be the Penguins, my team, as I haven't done one as them yet this year.

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS 2012-2013

The Penguins are coming off a disappointed end to last years playoffs. Change is in store as GM Hydro prepares for his first season.

Right off the go, a trade with Colorado. Eric Tangradi and a 3rd round pick in the 2013 draft for vet Milan Hejduk. Milan will play alongside Malkin and Neal on the second line.

The lines:

Kunitz - Crosby - Dupuis
Neal - Malkin - Hejduk
Cooke - Sutter - Kennedy
Glass - Smith - Adams

Martin - Letang
Orpik - Despres
Niskanen - Lovejoy

Fleury
Vokoun

The Penguins got off to a fast start as they beat the visiting Islanders 4-1 on their season opener. Kennedy/Smith/Malkin/Sutter all had goals, with Niskanen notching two assists and Sutter/Neal/Cooke/Letang all notching one.

Things are looking good!

Nice addition! Excited to see how the rest of the season goes

@Grind Jam Grind, wow sucks to be in that much cap trouble. Hopefully your team will still be good.

Off-Season and Draft Report

Devils sign Free Agent David Perron to Three Year Deal

David is 28, he is listed as a '2nd Line Forward' at 84 Overall.

Moving onto the Draft we did make one trade. That saw us sending Jack Connolly, and our 6th and 7th Round Draft Picks in this years Draft to Boston for their 2nd Round Draft Pick. Details Below:

Jack Connolly (26 Years Old, 4th Line Forward, 79 Overall, 3 1/2 Stars)
New Jersey's 2015 6th Round Pick (157th Overall)
New Jersey's 2015 7th Round Pick (187th Overall)

Boston's 2015 2nd Round Pick (32nd Overall)

Jack would be fighting for roster time if we kept him and we didn't have a 1st Round Pick, and had a late 2nd Round Pick so we traded for a top 35 pick. We only did get 2 notable prospects this draft, and they're below:

2nd Round Pick - 32nd Overall - Forward - Jaden Lindo - 3 1/2 Stars
2nd Round Pick - 53rd Overall - Defenceman - Jonathan Duchesne - 3 1/2 Stars

Onto the signings...

Re-Signings

Jacob Josefsen - 2 Years - $1,555,000
Rich Peverley - 2 Years - $2,000,000
Oscar Eklund - 1 Year - $2,000,000
Emerson Etem - 2 Years - $2,500,000
Mikkel Boedker - 4 Years - $5,000,000

Free Agent Signings

Ray Emery - 1 Year - $1,000,000
Dennis Rasmussen - 2 Years - $2,200,000
David Perron - 4 Years - $5,850,000

Trades

Andrei Loktionov (26 Years Old, 4th Line Forward, 78 Overall, 3 1/2 Stars)

Islander's 2017 1st Round Pick

We wanted another first and Andrei was dropping and now was going to be fighting for Roster time. Deal just made sense.

Just a quick question, in year 1 I won the stanley cup in 6 games with SJS (yay), however I know have a problem, some of my younger players (couture,Galiardi,Demers,Stalock,Hertl) are all improving and I have three prominent UFA's to sign Thornton,Marleau,Boyle. Do I trade them? My core pieces would consist of :
Couture,Pavelski,Neal,Galiardi,Hertl,Vlasic,Burns, Demers,Niemi.
Thoughts?

Depends. Whatever year you think you will need the cap space, make sure the contracts are expiring I always make sure I have contracts expiring every year. Occasionally I can get a long-term cap-friendly deal signed.

Canes Make Playoffs As Fifth Seed

The Hurricanes finished 5th in Eastern Conference with a record of 44-31-7 for 95 points. They are in third place in the Southeast Division. The Canes also brought home some hardware as Gord Wyman won the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy and Cam Ward was, once again, an all-star.

The Hurricanes play the 4th seeded, division rival, Florida Panthers who knock them out of the playoffs two years ago.

@CruickshankCH
You guessed it - Game 7 between the Flames and the Sharks. Backlund and Baertschi lead the red charge into the Shark Tank against Thornton and Marleau's teal and black.

@CruickshankCH
Marleau CRUSHED in open ice by Backlund!

@CruickshankCH
Net mouth scramble in front of Niemi. Flames can't pull the trigger.

@CruickshankCH
Cammalleri's shot appears to be after the whistle. Sharks are not pleased.

@CruickshankCH
Both teams appear to have settled in. Not a lot of great chances. Irving with a good glove.

@CruickshankCH
A few good chances, but the goalies stand tall. 0-0 after one.

@CruickshankCH
Irving with highway robbery on Marleau open at the side of the net. At the other end, Niemi stones Cammalleri on a mini-breakaway.

@CruickshankCH
Pavelski hits the post. Still scoreless.

@CruickshankCH
The puck is behind Niemi, but the goal is coming back. Goaltender interference on Aliu.

@CruickshankCH
Aliu going to the box again. He hit Thornton away from the play.

@CruickshankCH
Aliu to Pavelski and it's the first goal of the night! 19:42 of the second period.

@CruickshankCH
Baertschi takes the puck from Demers along the half wall and walks in for an unassisted goal at 3:50 of the third.

@CruickshankCH
Sharks get a power play late in the third. Still 2-0, but Saab goes to the box for interference.

@CruickshankCH
Backlund shorthanded to the empty net! The Flames are going to advance and upset the second-seeded Sharks.

Flames sweep the top-seeded Avs and it's on to the conference finals. Heat and Checkers going to Game 7.

Canes Exit Early Again

Once again, the Hurricanes lose in the first round of the playoffs. They were up 3-1 in the series, but they lost three straight to lose the series. There should be some more changes this offseason because this team, on paper, is good enough to make deep playoff runs every year, but they don't execute. Maybe the cup will come back to Carolina at some point, but not this season.

3-2
3-2
5-4
4-0
3-0
3-2 Peter Mueller OT GWG
2-1

Offseason report next.

@CruickshankCH
The dam appears to have finally broken for the Flames. 4-0. Can they carry the momentum into another game?

@CruickshankCH
Flames have battled back from 0-3 to force a deciding Game 7 in the desert. They seem to have solved the Coyotes defense and Mike Smith. Can they do the unthinkable?

@CruickshankCH
Giordano with a change of pace move beats David Rundblad and dekes Mike Smith. Giordano end-to-end, unassisted, at 5:56 of the 1st period. That's the start they wanted.

@CruickshankCH
Cammalleri gives the momentum back. Two for slashing.

@CruickshankCH
Smith with an unbelievable stop on Backlund's shorthanded chance.

@CruickshankCH
Saab strips Raymond and hits Neal for a breakaway. 2-0 Flames.

@CruickshankCH
Phoenix looks cooked. Getting outhit, outshot, and outworked. Baertschi hits the crossbar.

@CruickshankCH
Plenty of chances. Plenty of saves. Still 2-0.

@CruickshankCH
Mike Smith is keeping Phoenix in this game. If they go on to win, they owe him big.

@CruickshankCH
Hudler hits the empty net and this one is over. Flames have erased a 0-3 deficit and will advance to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since 2004.

@CruickshankCH
Wouldn't you know it - the Flames and Penguins are going to Game 7. This one's in Pittsburgh for all the marbles.

@CruickshankCH
Marc-Andre Fleury has been outstanding in these playoffs, but has had his problems in the past. Will we see Beauty or the Beast?

@CruickshankCH
The Penguins take the ice at Consol Energy Center. It is LOUD in here. 18.087 on their feet.

@CruickshankCH
Crosby beats Backlund in the opening faceoff and we are under way.

@CruickshankCH
Ryan hits the post. A huge sigh of relief goes up from the crowd.

@CruickshankCH
This is gonna be a slashing call to Pavelski. Penguins scored two power play goals in Game 6.

@CruickshankCH
And there it is. Penguins lead 1-0. Brooks Laich from Lehtivuori and Kennedy at 8:34 of the first. Laich picked up the rebound off a point shot. Nothing Irving could do.

@CruickshankCH
Flames will get a power play. Dumoulin hit Ponikarovsky before the puck got there.

@CruickshankCH
A power play goal each and it's tied 1-1. Giordano from the point, assists to Baertschi and Saab. 10:50 of the first.

@CruickshankCH
Crosby run down in the corner. Fans want a call. Looks like Meszaros hit him in the numbers. Play on.

@CruickshankCH
Now Cammalleri hits the post. Fleury looking less than sharp.

@CruickshankCH
Fleury with a spectacular save on a 3-on-2. Then a rebound pops out for Pavelski, but Letang partially blocks the shot with his stick. Still tied at the end of one.

@CruickshankCH
Backlund from Baertschi and Ryan at 4:26 of the second. Flames lead 2-1.

@CruickshankCH
Pavelski on the rebound. 3-1 Flames. Neal and Cammalleri the assists at 6:08 of the second.

@CruickshankCH
Irving with a big save on Laich right in front to preserve the two goal lead.

@CruickshankCH
Puck is loose in front of Irving, but Pens can't find it and time expires in the 2nd.

@CruickshankCH
Morrow is called offside on a 2-on-1. He looks disgusted.

@CruickshankCH
Morrow offside AGAIN on another 2-on-1.

@CruickshankCH
Now the Penguins ice the puck. Their rhythm is off.

@CruickshankCH
Flames to the power play with just over 4 minutes remaining and a two goal lead.

@CruickshankCH
Fleury to the bench now. Six attackers for Pittsburgh. The chant is "Let's go Pens!"

@CruickshankCH
James Neal was acquired three seasons ago from the Penguins. Now he seals their fate. Empty net goal from Pavelski and Baertschi.

@CruickshankCH
Flames clear the zone

The Calgary Flames are Stanley Cup Champions!

@CruickshankCH
Leland Irving deservedly wins the Conn Smythe Trophy. He was unreal.

@CruickshankCH
Giordano passes it to Bobby Ryan, to Antropov, to Brodie, to Irving.

@CruickshankCH
What a finish to a great season.

@CruickshankCH
And the Abbotsford Heat win the Calder Cup - fittingly, in seven games.

BREAKING NEWS: GM JaredCowenFan relived of his duties, new General Manager TBA

After failing to qualify for the Playoffs for the 4th straight year and progressively getting worse in the Standings each year, Devils management though it was time for a shake-up in the organization. We wish JaredCowenFan the best in his future endevers, wherever that may take him.

BREAKING NEWS: Edmonton Oilers Hire JaredCowenFan as new Head Coach

This news came right after JaredCowenFan was released from the New Jersey Devils. Oilers management liked what he say in Jared, as he has lead teams to Stanley Cups as he lead Winnipeg and Tampa Bay to Stanley Cups. More news coming shortly...

(Before I start up an Oilers GM I am going to send Gonchar to Dallas).
