No, but I could see MacT using a 2nd round pick on the best remaining goalie.

And when it comes to them "aggressively" looking to upgrade their goaltending, they're looking for someone they can stick immediately into their lineup to, at the very least, put some pressure on Dubnyk so that he doesn't become complacent in his role as the incumbent #1 goalie for the Oilers.

Drafting goalies is not "aggressively trying to upgrade goaltending".

From what I gathered from MacT's early comments is that we will be looking at Euro goalies with some development on them. Didn't he say something about how drafting goalies is a crap shoot? Have to think they don't use a 1st rounder if that's the case. Even a 2nd or 3rd seems like a waste if that's what you really think.

I really hope they don't take a goaltender in the 1st (I highly doubt they would anyway), and Fucale is nowhere near worth it. I'm not even convinced he's the best goalie in the draft.

Would you consider taking a goalie with Anaheim's second?

I think that's a good pick to use on a goalie. Only problem is Fucale will probably be gone and if you're the Oilers do you want to draft another Comrie? or Jarry who will have to develop with the pressure of playing in the town of the team that drafted him? I think that's a concern at the goalie position. They could take Desrosiers who backstopped Canada to a gold at the U18's though.

Out of curiosity.

Which goalies that are actually AVAILABLE, that would fit into our cap structure, and are actually considered an 'upgrade' on Dubnyk?

Halak?

I consider Dubnyk to be roughly in the same tier as Fasth, Bishop, and Scrivvens, which is pretty much middle of the pack.

Yeah - goalies are pretty hard to predict, though there are some decent ones that were former 1st rounders. From last year, the top 30 guys in terms of wins:

8 were 1st Rounders (Fleury, Price, Rask, Schneider, Lehtonen, Dubnyk, Brodeur, Varlamov)

4 2nd Rounders (Howard, Pavelec, Crawford, Bryzgalov)

2 3rd Rounders (Quick, Anderson)

3 4th Rounders (Holtby, Reimer, Emery)

2 5th Rounders (Miller, Smith)

2 7th Rounders (Lundqvist, Lindback)

1 8th Rounder (Rinne)

3 9th Rounders (Nabokov, Elliott, Vokoun)

5 Undrafted (Niemi, Backstrom, Bobrovsky, Fasth, Hiller)

The 3 Vezina finalists this year are a 7th round guy and 2 undrafted Europeans.

Backstrom and Smith.

In terms of free agents, I mean.

Backstrom is a legit starter that can very well steal games. Yes, he's older, but a two year deal would be a reasonable gamble on him.

Mike Smith is perhaps comparable to Dubnyk, but he has some attributes that Dubnyk does not. He's an excellent puck handler. That means he can contribute positively to the penalty kill by dumping the puck out past the point men. I think he's also a little stronger than Dubnyk in regards to high shots.

At the very least, Smith would be good competition for the starting role.

Smith will command $5+ as a UFa. Only Vancouver pays that much for goalie competition.

Tristan Jarry will be an oiler with a 2nd rounder.

I don't mind taking goaltenders anywhere in the draft as long as they're good enough to justify the selection. Craig Button and Mr & Mrs Fucale are probably the only 3 people who think Zach Fucale are worthy of a top 10 pick.

Drafting a prospect isn't exactly "aggressive"

Agreed, but if you sign or trade for a good goalie, and you draft a quality prospect, then that's certainly a good plan as any.

Drafting a goalie does not fix our problem they would be years away from the NHL. You are better off signing someone from Europe. I would say that the goaltending problem is not that Dubnyk is our starter, it's that we only have Dubnyk. Khabibulin has no future as an Oiler even if we do end up signing him for another year. We need a young guy with potential to share goaltending duty with Dubnyk, not a veteran on the decline. Even if Roy and Bunz pan out they are years away from the NHL, they need to secure a job in the AHL first.

If we draft Fucale at 7, I would totally jump off the bandwagon. I can see him being drafted later in the first but I'm not a big fan of this kid.

I'd rather go after Bernier or Khudobin. I think both would be perfect fits.

Interesting stuff: Rodrigue will have worked quite a bit with Benjamin Conz, who might be a guy worth bringin over to North America.

Conz is a good option. Still not sure why he was never drafted he impressed me in 2010.

But I've been advocating Tim Thomas. PLEASE do not draft a goalie that high.

For the record, I dont advocate drafting goaltenders in the first round. If they took a goalie with the 7th I would likely break down and cry.
