I chose 'something else', since there's so much that can happen between now and next summer.

He won't be re-signed next season as he still has 2 years left on his contract after this season.

I think he'll be traded personally, barring a big performance in the PO's / we go really deep

Agreed, provided someone offers fair value for him.

I think they might wait and see what happens with Selanne and Koivu.

I wish we traded him for Voracek when we had the chance.

Inquiry from a Rangers fan:

Would you be interested in Staal for Ryan+, or a deal around DZ/Girardi for Ryan?

Staal for Ryan 1:1 maybe. The injury scares me (due to possible loss of vision over time, more tentativeness during physical play).

Not so much a fan of either DZ or Girardi when we have a few D prospects lining up and ready to go: Lindholm, Vatanen especially.

We lose too much scoring depth if we trade Bobby for a defenseman in general, so I'm against it for that reason alone (in most part, with the exception of Staal).

Well, doctors have said he's expected to make a full recovery, and he's also playing tonight.

FWIW. I'm a little wary of a Ryan/Staal deal one-for-one, but I see where you're coming from.

DZ wouldn't work, but Staal or Girardi? I'd definitely consider that. Especially Staal, if he can return 100%. I'm not sure what Anaheim would need to add, though, and the Ducks would ultimately need to move at least one defenseman(maybe even two) at some point.

Edit: I don't think Ryan would get us Staal straight up. The value isn't far off by any means, but I do think Staal has a bit more.

I don't agree RPG is what makes this team elite. Getzlaf and Perry, absolutely, but if we're talking about most important players on this team, I'm not even sure if Ryan is in the top 5 right now.

Staal is exactly the kind of player we need and is in my opinion about as perfect of a match for Fowler as it comes. Staal can move the puck while still being an elite shutdown defenseman. Id move Ryan for him for sure, plus something , but not too much more. Maybe a depth player (Allen?) or a mid prospect (Clark/Wagner type), picks or some combination.

Only problem is we would need to find a second line forward for sure via free agency/trade, but with Staal in the fray we could afford to move defensemen for forwards. Plus our prospect pool is absolutely stacked right now and this could be a time to move one or two of our better prospects for an impact player now.

I think this team is developing a personality. Depending upon how we end up this year I see BM moving Bobby for the right return to fit our personality.

If Staal is assured to be healthy that could be a very good deal for the Ducks. But before somebody shows up here and says it, we do not add Sbisa to Bobby for Staal.

Staal for Ryan - yes (provided what we add isn't too significant). Girardi for Ryan is intriguing but the Rags would have to add.

Question - which side does Staal play more often. We have a ton of LDs and a shortage of RDs.

Everyone around here will say yes because they're a little bitter. We can't do that without a left winger coming back. We have no one that can take Bobby's place at the moment, and just saying free agents doesn't work. We need to see what free agent we can land first.

Obviously the trade is conditional on replacing Ryan by other means (trade/FA). But ignoring any bitterness anyone has towards Ryan - a top pairing defenseman of Staal's calibre (assuming health isn't an issue) has more value than a 60-70 point first line LW and while we have a lot of depth on D - we definitely lack a bit of top end talent.

Marc Staal is a better player than Bobby Ryan, its not a matter of being bitter. I watch Staal play frequently, he's exactly what we need. If we get the chance to make that swap (obviously ensuring we can get another Top 6 winger through trade/FA) you make the trade.

Personally, I dont make the move if I'm NYR. I dont think Bobby is what they need.

No, you really don't. Trades aren't just made on the basis of value.
