We don't have much depth as far as left hand defensemen are concerned with only 3 of those players who will most likely make it. With his play in the playoffs and his impact at the Worlds last year he definitely deserves an invite to camp. You can't have all your dmen play offensively, with his size and shutdown ability he deserves a chance.
uhhh

Vlasic
Garrison
Beauchemin

There's three shutdown lefties who get in before Methot 11 out of 10 times.

Yeah I would take anyone of those 3 guys over Methot.

Doubt he even gets invited. He's a solid shutdown dman but there are a lot of deserving players.

I doubt he'll even get invited, just too much depth.

No. Solid defenseman but his hope of making Team Canada IMO is if they have a C team.

I understand the angle OP is coming from. Figures Methot could compliment a heavily offensive team as a defensive specialist. Fine and dandy.

The problem is, he's not the best defensive specialist from Canada. Marc Staal, Marc Edouard Vlasic, Francois Beauchemin, and Dan Hamhuis for sure, and maybe Karl Alzner, are all ahead of him.

What is this? I don't even ...

No, he should not even get an invitation. There are just too many Canadian defensemen who are simply much better than him.

Based on his play this year? I would take him over all of those except Staal in top form, but given his eye injury I'd like to see how Staal plays this year first.

Between this and Methot vs. Phaneuf... I think some people think Methot is a lot better than he actually is.

He plays tough minutes, sure, but Erik Karlsson is doing most of the work there.

No one has even mentioned Seabrook.

Methot wouldn't make team USA.

Except Karlsson was a huge liability after coming back from the playoffs and Methot was there to pick up the slack.

Oh...and Methot played most of this season without Karlsson. Anchoring our blueline and, as I said, he was our MVP.

I think people just don't recognize the name or haven't seen him play much because he used to play for Columbus (myself included). However, if his form in Ottawa is for real he's really, really good.

Sure he was.

No he wasn't. At all.

He plays for Ottawa?

He's good.

I'm kind of assuming you haven't seen much of Beauchemin or Vlasic. Especially Beauchemin, who was likely getting Norris consideration before his torn ACL.

All those guys have a much bigger and better body of work. Seabrook is another one.

Very underrated on this forum (and especially by the media), but no.

The surprising thing for people who may not watch him is that he isn't your proto-typical shutdown defenseman. He can really skate and has a decent outlet pass... also, for me, his patience with the puck in the defensive zone is really, really impressive. Too often you will see a defensive defenseman just try to get the puck out as quickly as possible. He can hold on to it, make a nice move and then get the puck out.

He would still get exposed on the C team with no Craig Anderson.
