Seabrook, Boyle, Bouwmeester, Staal, Phaneuf, Campbell, Green, Vlasic and Beauchemin would all be ahead of Methot too. Like someone else said, he might make our 'C' team.

He's a better option than Boyle because Methot plays the left side, Boyle has lost a step, and Methot can play against top offensive players with no worries.

He might be a better option than Staal depending on how Staal recovers from injuries.

He's definitely a better option than Campbell because he can play against top offensive players with no worries. Canada doesn't need another PP specialist in Campbell

He's a better option than Phaneuf because he's a better skater. Phaneuf would get exposed on big ice. Methot is better defensively.

Same for Beauchemin. Methot is a better skater.

Better option than Green because Canada has Subban and Letang. No room for Green, he'd have the same role.

Methot is bigger, faster, more physical and just as good if not better defensively than Vlasic.

The surprising thing for people who may not watch him is that he isn't your proto-typical shutdown defenseman. He can really skate and has a decent outlet pass... also, for me, his patience with the puck in the defensive zone is really, really impressive. Too often you will see a defensive defenseman just try to get the puck out as quickly as possible. He can hold on to it, make a nice move and then get the puck out.
Methot for Foligno is looking like highway robbery for Murray. Great find. Voted that he'll get an invite, not certain that the answer will be no.

We don't have much depth as far as left hand defensemen are concerned with only 3 of those players who will most likely make it. With his play in the playoffs and his impact at the Worlds last year he definitely deserves an invite to camp. You can't have all your dmen play offensively, with his size and shutdown ability he deserves a chance.
This.... He is more mobile then everyone there except Keith and Bouwmeester. He is bigger then everyone except Bouwmeester and he is better defensively then all of them, clearly he doesn't have much of an offensive game, but pretty much every other d man that plays on the team does.

He is the perfect partner for a Letang or Subban. His mobility on the big ice could be key. I don't think he makes the team but I do think he gets an invite to camp.

Its too bad all of Canadas best d men play the right side. Can Pieterangelo, Subban, Doughty or Letang play the left side effectively?

Staals injury leaves him as a question mark the fact that apparently his eye has permanent damage will likely leave him off the team. Without the injury I think he was a lock.

I think this is team Canada D.

Doughty
Keith
Seabrook
Letang
Weber
Subban
Pieterangelo
Bouwmeester

If theyre looking for a top defensive player with limited offence... i think they go with M. Staal (if healthy), Hamhuis, or Vlasic before Methot.

I didn't think he'd be invited.

Kudos to him after a stellar season.

What is funny is that more people have been voting for not invited since the announcement.

It was below 100 before the bump.

I'm not sure if he's proved the doubters wrong yet. He's one of 17 invites to make an 8 man unit, the odds are still stacked way against him. Unless invited means invited to this camp, then yeah he proved everyone who picked the last option wrong.

Many votes saying he wouldn't have gotten invited.

I still doubt that he makes it, but if he has a monster start to the season he has a chance.

Well, I am one of the 38 that voted he would get invited.

He may make the team as the number 7 guy and pair up with a guy like Letang. His advantage over others is his mobility which will be important in Sochi. Overall, I doubt he makes the team.

Even then those guys have decent offense, capable of putting up 30-40 point seasons in the NHL. Canada just doesn't need a dman that simply brings defense.

But then again he did get an invite. Although considering the number of players invited I'm wondering if they didn't bring a few along to look at for future WHC teams.

That's fair, I was really only referring to myself, really. I had him 17th when this poll was made, and the only guys ahead of him who didn't make the camp where Beauchemin (injured) and Campbell, with Alzner and Hamonic replacing them. I still think he's in tough to make the final cut.

That's fine.

My point was that a lot of people were chirping Ottawa fans for even thinking he'll get an invite, yet it just happened. Very few people actually thought he'd make the team (4%).

Personally, I voted he wouldn't make the team, but I'm not really surprised he got an invite. He's not a flashy player and does his work quietly, so a lot of people don't really notice him. However, he can throw sweet hits, he has the hip check perfected, and he uses his stick really well. He also has great skating ability. He was our best defenseman last year.

He has a chance. Most of the best candidates are RDs who are offensively inclined and that works in his favour being a defensive LD.

He has a history with TC too. I think its feasible to see him go over a guy like perhaps Subban or Pietrangelo when you have Letang, Doughty and Weber already there as point producing puck mover types to bring an element of balance. He fits a need and could be a staple on the PK unit if they want that type of player.

By no means am I saying he's better than PK or AP (he's clearly not), I'm just saying that he may be a better fit in a short tournament setting as a #6/7 for his role over those players who would have to play out of position and accustomed role.

I'd put money on one of him or Staal being there for these reasons. As of now, Keith is the only LD who's a lock.

He's fairly mobile, he's more physical and defensive, he doesn't handle the puck like a grenade.

He could get the nod, it's not impossible. Given the way the last Olympic team was assembled there's an outside chance he gets picked as the 8th guy.
