However the team that has presented the offer-sheet usually is reluctant to move off the CBA stated compensation based on annual dollars.
I don't recall that from the prior CBA, and I read through all of the offer sheet stuff in the current CBA and didn't see any mention of alternate compensation.

The CBA specifically states:

Quote:
The Prior Club, within seven (7) days after the date it receives the Offer Sheet, may exercise or not exercise its Right of First Refusal...
Quote:
If the Prior Club gives the Restricted Free Agent and his Certified Agent, if any, notice, in accordance with Exhibit 3 hereto, that it is exercising its Right of First Refusal...such Restricted Free Agent and the Prior Club shall be deemed to have entered into a binding agreement...
Quote:
If the Prior Club does not give the Restricted Free Agent the First Refusal Exercise Notice within the seven (7) day period, the Player and the New Club shall be deemed to have entered into a binding agreement...and the Restricted Free Agent's Prior Club shall receive from the New Club the Draft Choice Compensation...
In the past, there has been speculation that a team would offer sheet a player, only to work out a trade for that player instead. The Phil Kessel trade comes to mind in that regard.

Another #NYR note: Rangers and reps for RFA D Ryan McDonagh have held preliminary contract talks, but nothing serious yet

Ben Hankinson represents McDonagh.

I'm not worried about McDonagh wanting an outlandish contract. If he wants a 5-6M deal, those offensive stats need to be improved. Not saying he's an offensive black hole, he's far from it, but those stats, other than being 2nd in ES production for defensemen for 2011-2012, aren't all that impressive.

And tied for fourth in ESP this season.

With more PP time, McDonagh is a 40-50 point defenseman easily, IMO.

I know you're joking, but I don't think he'll every be a plus PP performer.

He won't be a superior PP guy but it's a start. Guy can skate and has a decent shot, and has shown he can put the moves on. Could be more helpful than a shoot wide MDZ or Richards.

Agreed. He puts a lot of points at ES, but he also plays some of the most minutes at ES too. He is an above average offensive defenseman with elite shutdown capabilities. Not sure if he can QB PP on his own, nor if I would want him to with his responsibility at ES and PK.

Pashin, I think, just didnt want to compete here and go to AHL.
If we moved a coupla guys, it'd be interesting to see if he shows at training camp, and what he can bring now.

Over the course of a season that is going to wear on him and bite him in the arse down the stretch and in the PO's.

We should not have to worry about managing him because he's a fat body.
Agree totally. I would not consider Buf, unless we made a deal for E Kane and Buf was a required throw in.

Sounds pretty tempting for Winnipeg...

Buff was pretty good for Winnipeg. Perhaps the weight thing is being overblown? CC Sabathia is often critiqued for his fitness level and still is one of the top pitchers in the game. Apples to oranges, I know.

I think people are concerned about that he got the weight during season. Could mean he doesn't commit, or dedicate etc.

If we traded for Buff, we'd have to make it mandatory for him to have some off season regimen to lose weight or something. Dude is a player though, that's for sure.

Buff would be a good addition to this team imo, though I don't really want to give up anything significant for him.

I have Ben Hankinson's e-mail. Maybe I should start blowing up his inbox to get a deal done fast

Defenseman like Dan Girardi have a shelf life before they get too old or too banged up to be effective. He hasn't reached that point yet. If the Rangers trade for Big Buff, it's to compliment a defensive group with Girardi, not replace him.

There are pros and cons with every player. Buf's cons worry me. We're not talking about a 2 year investment here. A player flirting around with a 6M dollar cap hit should be obsessed with his conditioning. The long-term aspect makes me wonder if he's worth the risk.

I'd shop elsewhere, if I am in fact shopping.

We don't need more defensemen, we need a LW who scores goals and is a legit top6 forward.

We can deal Del Zotto and have McD, Girardi, Staal, Moore, Eminger and Stralman left with McI waiting.
