Living in Ottawa I've had a good chance to watch Silfverberg play.. He immediately became my favourite player. Whats underrated about him is his vision! With Etem's speed and Silfs amazing release, that'd be a deadly combo! I dont know how well he'd play with Getz and Perry though! In Ottawa he was playing the PK,PP,4-on4, Even strength.. Every situation and he looked rock solid! Very pleased!

Musical chairs for our roster..... you can draw up so many lines and knowing Bruce we'll see every possible combination.

If Penner works out:

Penner - Getzlaf - Perry
Silf - Bonino - Palmieri
Winnik - Koivu - Cogs
Beleskey/Maroon - Holland - Etem

If Etem proves capable enough defensively (PK ability is not the same as being good defensively 5 on 5) you could throw him up to 3rd line RW and switch Cogs to LW with Winnik on the 4th line.

If Penner plays at the same level he did with LA the past 2 years (eg still an NHLer but not a full time top 6 forward):

Maroon/Beleskey/Penner - Getzlaf - Perry
Silf - Bonino - Palmieri
Winnik - Koivu - Cogs
Maroon/Beleskey/Penner - Holland - Etem

Silf can move up to the 1st line when needed also.

I like:

Penner-Getzlaf-Perry
Silfverberg-Holland-Palmieri
Cogliano-Koivu-Etem (love that line)
Winnik-Bonino-Beleskey
Maroon, Staubitz

Defense is still an issue if Sbisa still sucks

Defense was never an issue and Sbisa still sucks.

I hate Penner on the top line. I don't think he's a fit with Getz and Pears. I'd rather have a puck hound like Etem or Palmieri be on there line. That'll be the slowest line we've had since they were a line six years ago.

Switch Winnick and Etem

Etem is probably going to start on the 4th line and play PK. If he really takes off, or out plays someone, then maybe, but his first full year they wont put too much on him. Remember he started off pretty slow in the AHL.

If you plan on him being on the 4th line, then look how dangerous that line can be, and if we roll 4 lines, that is a great line.

Palms is a puck hound?

Silfverberg - Getzlaf - Perry
Palmeri - Bonino - Etem
Winnik - Koivu - Cogliano
Penner - Holland/Rakell - Belesky

I love our top 9 at the moment.. I think that looks real promising. I know Belesky is a LW but has he played RW?? Our top 9 looks great!

Don't understand how you could call that 2nd line great. I see two young unproven players and a center who is better suited for a 3rd line role. Penner was not just signed to be 4th line wing. He will get first chance with Getz and Perry.

YEAH! Put three guys together on the second line that have a combined 220 games played, but stick the newly signed free agent with 522 games alone 4th line time. Not to mention it has already been said he will get the chance to reunite PPG. If we were signing a 4th line hopeful, we would have gotten someone under $900k, not $2 million.

I see this being very possible (although I really don't like the 2nd line's lack of experience). Seems like Holland will get his shot, otherwise Bonino/Rakell might step up. If Penner flops, I'd still expect him to get second line minutes to balance out the inexperience.

Where was it said that Penner will get a chance on the top line?

I don't have a link but I remember reading something today that Murray said he's hopeful Penner will stop the "revolving wingers" on the top line. It is BB's choice though. However Murray's quotes make me believe Penner was brought in for that line.

You can't bring Penner in and not try him with Getz and Pears. i think we'll see it during training camp and to start the season. If it doesn't work, there's still options for that spot.

As much as I dislike the Penner signing, it'd be crazy to not give him training camp/preseason/start of season with Getzlaf and Perry.

Penner - Getzlaf - Perry
Silfverberg - Holland - Palmieri
Winnik/Cogliano - Koivu - Winnik/Cogliano (forgot which side they played)
Beleskey - Bonino - Etem

Ex. Maroon, Staubitz (I'd say put him on waivers)

Defense:
A mess.

Goaltending:
Hiller
Fasth
Unless Hiller falters, again.

Our defense is so incredibly reliant on Luca Sbisa right now. If he can't be a top 4 guy next year, then I have no clue what we're going to do. This is why I lobbied for signing Lydman instead of Lovejoy. Lydman, if healthy, can still fill in in a top 4 role (as he showed in the playoffs and most of last year), not sold Lovejoy can be a top 4 guy for an extended period of time. Sbisa must take a big step forward this year...he's going to be given every chance in the world to succeed. If he can't, then we have a defense full of bottom pairing guys (except Beauchemin and Fowler and sometimes Souray).

It's telling that nobody wants to list our defence along with the lines.

It needs work.

Is that right? Or could it be that there aren't many deviations out there for these pairings?

Beauchemin-Souray
Fowler-Lovejoy
Sbisa-Allen?

Seems pretty set in stone to me.

I really don't get why our defense is SO terrible. We were 11th in the league last year in GAA. It's not like our goaltending was always superb either. Are we still this spoiled from the Niedermayer-Pronger-Beauchemin days?

Of course those are going to be the pairings (or close to it as it stands). I don't see Souray and Beauch repeating their performances from last year. And I also only see 1 reliable pmd. I guess we disagree.

our defense is horrendous for a team that wants to win the west. Sbisa and Fowler both need to have big years, because there will likely be regression from our older Dmen, hopefully the coach plays Vatanen there is no excuse not to now!

I don't see how the defense is solid...I really don't. We're looking at a top 4 that has 2 huge question marks. Can Souray stay healthy, and not wear down at the end of the season? Can Sbisa handle top 4 minutes and not get owned by second line players like he did last season when given the chance? I'm not optimistic that both those things are going to happen...not at all. Beauchemin is going to regress too. All signs point to him being at least a little worse next year. The bottom pairing is fine. Allen and Vatanen is going to be solid for us I think. Lovejoy is a good #7. Fowler is going to improve, and he's already a top 4 guy easily so not worried about him at all. Souray and Sbisa scare me though...they couldn't tie their skates in the playoffs last year (Sbisa couldn't tie his skates the whole year). I hope they prove me wrong...I just don't like going into a season with this many questionable players playing tough minutes.

Lovejoy most certainly isn't being penciled into a top 4 role. I think next year we need Sbisa to step up, Fowler to continue his progression and Beauchemin not to regress too much. There are far worse groups out there but we're not going to win a cup with the current D in place.

Best case scenario - we perform well enough to be buyers at the deadline and get a legit shut down guy for our playoff run.
