That's a solid pickup for the Nats.

didnt have to sell the farm to get Fister.

I think his ERA will be a little better coming to the NL and should be one of the better #3/4 in the league this season

If that's all it takes to land Fister, I'm frustrated the Orioles didn't go after him. Especially with the Tigers glaring need at the back of the bullpen and Johnson on the market.

I really like the Wizards starting 5, not a massive fan of Webster but meh.

I only worry they've still got a ways to go with the bench and definitely coaching.

Didn't like JJ, but that's all they could get?

Heard player to be named too. Hopefully a decent arm. A's are flush with those.

Salary dump too.

That said, Weeks is a turd. He's a fast turd, but a turd none the less (insert joke about "the runs" here)

The O's better put the money they saved to good use, because they just traded a useful bullpen arm for a guy who couldn't crack the majors last year. Hardly the answer at 2B.

Addition by subtraction for me.

Don't even care how Weeks turns out, though he's got great speed and solid plate discipline.

But who closes? Don't say Hunter because his numbers say no.

If they're cutting salary, when they're up in attendance (numbers were way up) and have all the MASN cash, then it's just more of the same.

Especially since they're shopping Wieters and aren't really talking to Davis about an extension yet.

I think this move isn't really cutting salary so much as clearing salary to be used elsewhere. Whether it's a Wieters or Davis extension or a free agent remains to be seen. They've been linked to Beltran and Peralta (before he signed) already, so there's indication that they're willing to spend this off-season.

The closing job is one of the more overrated in baseball. I'm all about selling high on closers (though this wasn't exactly selling high, certainly when compared to the Sherill) and letting a different reliever step in. Barring a free agent acquisition (not out of the question), it looks like it would be between O'Day and Hunter to earn the job.

I'm sure the O's can find a closer that won't lead the league in blown saves and then look for $10M+ in arbitration.

Not worried in the least.

love this pickup, pretty much unscathed by this one, lombo adds great depth to the infield but more then expendable at this point with rendon filling the gap at 2nd, fairly well at that. I mentioned during the season Krols first relief appearance was pretty much lights out, for 3 solid innings. i still suprised more notice wasnt taken by that. I think the Tigers got a good asset in that as well as Lombo just not a full time starter yet. but yeah awesome trade, suprised thats all it took to get Fister here, looking good for the Nats this season.... but we said that last year at this point.

Right. When I said "Salary Dump", I should have been clearer....in that its dumping salalry to spend elsewhere. I certainly dont think the O's will have a smaller overall salary for next season (unless the cant get anyone to sign there), but tehy cant spend wildly.

So Johnson was a 10m slot that could be used on a different player. Hopefully an SP (would LOVE Cliff Lee, but that may be a pipedream).

One thing Buck seems to understand is the bullpen. While last year may be an anamoly for Johnson, it also may be the league "figuring him out", as he has never had dominant stuff. He got by on guile, good defense, and "strategery (read mental fortitude)", more than most.

O'Day or Hunter can do it...or they will add someone else later on this off season to close games. As a Roto fantasy baseball hound, finding someone to close isnt *that* hard. It can be an issue (ask Detroit, Houston, Chicago Cubs,or Cleveland last year), but its usually about that mental fortitude aspect.

My guess is the O's will sign a Lindstrom/Gregg type (not those players, but a reliever down a little bit) to add to the mix (Mike Gonzales or Tyler Clippard or Joakim Soria etc etc)

That said....It should be O'Day's role going into camp.

If they do trade for Samardzja, Norris might be the best closer option.

Don't see the point of trading Johnson and then signing a different closer for $8M+, especially one with the injury history of Balfour. If we're getting a guy with injury concerns, I'd rather go for Brian Wilson anyway.

If we want Fister to be successful here, we have to be better defensively. I don't know if it will happen, but i would love to see the Lerners to fork up the money to sign Cano and move Rendon to 3B and Zim to 1B.
