Man, they are totally devoid of scoring forwards. They should trade us Adam Larsson for some of them.

New clubhouse leader in the 2015 McDavid chase, though. Connor McDevil.

I think this past draft was the first time in a while where there wasn't a lot of talk about the "Russian factor" from the media.

Think that's coming back in full force?

I guess I didn't really understand cap recapture penalties, which I guess get a lot worse the longer a player is with a team (so a Vinny retirement would have boned us whereas NJ drops a measly 250k in cap space per year).

So, this is basically a cheap-as-free amnesty for a guy who wasn't a completely obvious amnesty candidate. Layer of intrigue to the whole thing.

Looking forward to seeing what kind of nutzo contract he scores from the KHL.

The Vinny recapture problem was predicated on him retiring in a few years. The penalty per year is lessened the earlier it happens in the contract.

There's been talk about Kovalchuk getting 20 million/year for SKA, although I don't put a lot of stock into what players are rumored to get in the KHL.

Jonathon Blum signs 1 year, 2-way deal with the Wild. There goes that idea, at least for this year...

With the KHL getting better organized and apparently being stable, the "Russian factor" should be stronger now then ever. The NHL and media may be in denial about it, but if the KHL can stay stable, keep corruption to a minimum, and raise their salaries some, most Russians and many Euros will soon decide to just stay home. That will make drafting Euros a bit riskier each successive year that the KHL improves itself.

I can't rationalize why someone would not want to play in TB.

And some fan somewhere probably just wrote the same thing about Moscow.

The Bruins said they want to 'freshen up' their amateur scouting staff, but firing their head amateur scout when they've had so much success seems like an odd move.

Though the last few drafts look ok as of now and there is at least 2 potential players from 10 draft in system, they didn't produce any NHLers from 07-10 drafts, except Seguin, 2nd ovr. pick. I think the avg. is close to 2 nhlers per draft.

After seven years with the Kings, Ron Hextall moves on the Philly to become their new assistant GM and director of hockey ops: http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=678038
Quote:
"I do want to be a general manager," Hextall said Monday. "I talked to [Holmgren] about that when we talked about this job. If something else becomes available, I at least want to look at it. He was absolutely fine with that. My goal still hasn't changed in terms of where I want this to all end. I'm looking forward to going back and doing my part to help the Philadelphia Flyers be successful and hopefully bring a Stanley cup to Philly."

Yes, but he was crucial in signing Krug and asking for Bartowski in that trade.

A new study says a recent NHL rule change designed to cut down on the number of concussions in the league hasn't made a difference.

Rob Blake replaces Ron Hextall as the King's assistant GM. This means he's leaving the NHL's department of player safety.

The Score has ranked all 30 NHL cities in terms of attractivity and desirability to play for for UFAs. Tampa Bay is #20 on their list.

http://blogs.thescore.com/nhl/2013/0...d-free-agents/

Wasn't there a player poll last season and Tampa Bay finished top-10 or even top-5? Does anybody know if there will be a 2013 edition?

Yeah, I mean, it's just one guy's opinion. That said, Justin Bourne did play college hockey in Alaska, and Alaskans seem to flock here, so it's a bit surprising I guess.

That 2012 player poll you're referencing had TB at 6th, behind 5 Original Six teams but ahead of the Rangers. Not bad.

I'll save everyone some time (see bolded):

Quote:
18. Edmonton Oilers

Iím catching some flack for having the Oil this high around the office, but winning is important to me, and I think Edmonton is one of those teams on the cusp of breaking out in a big way, especially given the promotion of Craig MacTavish to GM. Itís not everyday you get to play with like, 604 #1 draft picks or whatever they have. Their fans are all about the team. ÖStill, the city in the winter is arguably the most difficult to live in around the league, weather-wise. Itís not exactly a cultural hotbed either. Iím thinking hockey-heavy here.
Winning is important...so I'll go to Edmonton!

Followed by the flawless logic of:

Quote:
20. Tampa Bay Lightning

All sunshine and no taxes, yep, Iíll go play there. I think Steve Yzerman is a hard worker who will do his best to make that team competitive too. That said, Iím not sold on them as true contender, and while the weather is nice, I guess I should just get this out there Ė Florida scares the s**t out of me. I couldnít turn down the whole beach-plus-puck thing, but thereís not a ton beyond that. Playing with Stamkos, I Ďspose.
Florida scares him, but he notes how Washington D.C. is a nice location, and how Philadelphia is an awesome city. But yeah...Florida is scary compared to the bad parts of Philly and DC. Gotcha...

I think that Florida might scare him because of the amount of ridiculous news stories that come out of here.

MAB also just signed with Zurich.
